When you have a group of people, lets say gypsies as an example, that thrive on undesirable activities like stealing, scamming, etc, and they've done this for centuries if not millennia, what happens is that culture kind of becomes a self-reinforcing selective breeding program that selects for the traits that enhance their ability to do those things, after a while it becomes hard wired into them to be that way.
Some people look at a group like that and think to themselves "eventually they'll come around and stop being like that eventually" but nope, it's hard wired into them to survive with that kind of behavior. It is now an innate difference between us and them as groups that can't be changed.
Not that individuals can't overcome that, but in order to overcome that they've having to overcome hard wiring, which is never easy, and most individuals in a group are generally not capable of overcoming hard wiring like that. | 323 |

| 17 | I recall watching something that oil companies would build an oil rig, use it for some number of years, over time its profitability would go down and its cost to maintain would go up, then they sell it, profitability continues to go down and cost to maintain keeps going up so that company sells it, then the next one sells it, then next thing you know you have dozens and dozens of these dilapidated rusty clunkers abandoned and falling apart littering the whole coast that no one knows what to do with.
I have a feeling a similar thing will happen with the data centers. As new hardware comes out and the cost to maintain a building increases, the companies just start abandoning existing data centers and build new ones nearby while the old one just becomes a dilapidated overgrown eyesore that companies will be scrambling to figure out what to do with. | 335 |
| 18 | I really have to wonder something about all of these data centers. What's going to happen when one day the cost to run them profitably AND maintain them, or upgrade them to be able to do that becomes too expensive to justify keeping it going? It's going to happen eventually.
I've built computers, I know some of you have too. I see these datacenters as basically a giant computer. Eventually the hardware in these things is going to be outdated to the point that they can't justify keeping it running, since these companies are so cutthroat about stuff like this. On a computer you can upgrade it, but only by a certain amount before you've maxxed out with the best possible CPU that motherboard supports. Now if you want to keep using it, you've got to replace the CPU and the motherboard, and by then there's a decent chance that you have to replace the RAM too since it's changed from DDR4 to DDR5 or something for all the new ones, so your DDR4 is now useless.
That's not even including that your power supply will start to have problems eventually. At some point it becomes not worth it to keep upgrading, so you're better off just bringing it to the E-waste place and getting a new one entirely. What happens when it's brick and mortar data centers though where that's not an option? A building full of outdated hardware that has to be maintained. Methinks there's going to be one day like ten years from now where there's just these abandoned overgrown datacenters all over the place, that had to have all kinds of infrastructure for power and water built for them that's no longer used and is just decrepit and falling apart. | 327 |
