Soon afterward, his left arm was also severed. Even then, he continued trying to deliver the water. An arrow struck the water skin and the water spilled onto the ground. Moments later, a heavy blow brought him down from his horse.
🏴🚩 #ImamHussein (AS) rushed to his brother’s side. With the martyrdom of Abbas, the children’s last hope of receiving water vanished, and the camp suffered one of its most painful losses.
🏴🚩 By this point, nearly all of the Imam’s companions and family members had been martyred.
🏴🚩 Imam Hussein (AS) then entered the battlefield for the final time. Historical accounts describe how, despite thirst, exhaustion, and numerous wounds, he fought fiercely and for a prolonged period. Whenever groups attacked him, he drove them back. Many soldiers in the Kufan army feared facing him directly.
🏴🚩 Eventually, he was attacked from all sides. His body was covered with wounds, and he finally fell to the ground.
🏴🚩 Various individuals took part in the final assault. Early historical sources mention figures such as Sinan ibn Anas and Khawli ibn Yazid al-Asbahi in connection with the beheading of the Imam. The most widely cited historical account states that Sinan ibn Anas, acting under Shimr’s orders, played the principal role in the crime.
🏴🚩 Following the Imam’s martyrdom, the army stormed the camp. They looted its belongings and attacked the tents. Women and children sought refuge amid the flames and chaos. Among the survivors was Ali ibn al-Hussein (AS), who had been unable to participate in the battle due to illness.

🏴🚩 The morning of the 10th of #Muharram, 61 AH, had arrived. A force numbering in the thousands from Kufa now stood against a caravan whose fighting men numbered only a few dozen.
🏴🚩 #ImamHussein ibn Ali (AS) arranged his companions for battle, entrusted the banner to Abbas ibn Ali (AS), and addressed the Kufan army one final time. He reminded them of who he was, asking whether he was not the grandson of the Prophet (S) and whether they themselves had not invited him through their letters. Yet his words had no effect on Yazid’s commanders.
🏴🚩 At last, Umar ibn Sa’d fired the first arrow and declared: “Bear witness before the governor (Yazid) that I was the first to shoot.” With a barrage of arrows, the battle began.
🏴🚩 In the opening stages of the battle, the companions of Imam Hussein (AS) entered the battlefield one after another and were martyred. Among the most prominent were Muslim ibn Awsaja, Habib ibn Muzahir, Zuhayr ibn Qayn, Burayr ibn Khudayr, and many other loyal companions. They fought until their last breath, and the Imam’s ranks grew smaller with every passing moment.
🏴🚩 At noon, Imam Hussein (AS) performed the prayer in the form of Salat al-Khawf. As arrows rained down from every direction, companions such as Sa’id ibn Abdallah al-Hanafi shielded him with their bodies and were martyred.
🏴🚩 After the companions had fallen, the members of the Banu Hashim clan stepped forward. The young men of the Prophet’s household entered the battlefield one after another. Among them, the martyrdom of Ali al-Akbar ibn Hussein (AS) brought immense grief to the camp. Soon afterward, the Imam’s sons, nephews, and other relatives were also martyred.
🏴🚩 In the later hours of the day, Abbas ibn Ali (AS)—the standard-bearer and protector of the camp—set out toward the Euphrates to bring water for the thirsty children. Fighting his way through the enemy lines, he reached the river and filled his water skin.
🏴🚩 Despite his intense thirst, Abbas refused to drink, reserving the water for the Prophet’s family and the children. He then began the journey back to the camp. (Continue...)
