The Iran–US MoU: A Test of Trust, Unity and Strategic Patience
The Rear-View Mirror of the Camp of Imam Hasan al-Mujtaba
As supporters debate the Iran–US MoU and whether the leadership should have pressed ahead instead of settling, it may be worth glancing into the rear-view mirror of history. Not because history repeats itself exactly, but because the same camp has faced a similar test before: the camp of Imam Hasan al-Mujtaba.
The circumstances are different. The personalities are different. The balance of power is different. But some of the questions, emotions and dangers are strikingly familiar.
After the martyrdom of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, Imam Hasan inherited a struggle against an adversary whom many of his followers regarded as untrustworthy and responsible for the blood of their leader, their commanders and countless innocent people. When Imam Hasan entered into a settlement with Muawiyah, many supporters were shocked. Some were disappointed. Some were angry. Some believed the moment called for pressing ahead rather than compromise.
Today, some supporters see echoes of that moment. They see another Imam Mojtaba leading a camp that has suffered the loss of a predecessor, senior commanders and civilians at the hands of a hostile enemy. They see a settlement with an adversary they do not trust. And once again, supporters are divided over whether the decision was wise.
The important lesson from Imam Hasan's experience is not that every settlement is correct. Nor is it that every leader is beyond criticism. Rather, it is that the greatest danger after a controversial settlement may not be the agreement itself, but what happens inside the camp afterward.
The supporters of Imam Hasan disagreed among themselves. Some questioned the decision. Others questioned the leadership. Public quarrels multiplied. Internal trust weakened. Whatever one thinks of the settlement itself, history shows that division within the camp became one of the greatest gifts handed to the opposing side.
This does not mean supporters should stop thinking, asking questions or expressing concerns. Blind loyalty is not a virtue. But neither is allowing disappointment to turn into suspicion, suspicion into division, and division into self-destruction.
One of the realities of leadership is that leaders often possess information, responsibilities and strategic considerations that are not visible to ordinary supporters. A leader may choose a path that disappoints his followers, not because he lacks resolve, but because he sees dangers or opportunities that others do not.
History suggests that a movement can survive an unpopular compromise. It can survive a temporary setback. It can even survive a broken agreement. What is far more difficult to survive is the collapse of trust between leadership and supporters.
This is why the real test posed by the Iran–US MoU may not be whether every supporter agrees with it. The real test is whether disagreement can be managed without destroying unity, discipline and confidence within the camp.
A settlement can later prove wise or unwise. An adversary can later honor or violate its commitments. Time will reveal those answers.
But one lesson from the camp of Imam Hasan remains relevant: when supporters allow internal division to consume them, they may hand the enemy a victory that the enemy could never have achieved on the battlefield.
The rear-view mirror does not tell us exactly where to go. But it can remind us of dangers that previous generations encountered on the same road.

| 12 | 📸 #BREAKING: #Iran FM Spox Esmaeil Baghaei: Three other topics were negotiated alongside the MoU
💬 “We did not negotiate only about the memorandum. Simultaneously with the text, we held separate discussions on the release of Iran’s frozen assets, war reparations, and the lifting of oil sanctions.”
💬 “Throughout the negotiations, we kept in mind all the bitter experiences of past US duplicity — to ensure a better outcome.”
💬 On Clause 11: “What matters is that we can access these frozen assets whenever we wish. The mechanisms have been considered. The #US has committed to removing all obstacles.”
💬 “We have paid a heavy price in past negotiations with the US. The effort is focused on mutual commitments. A specialized working group will likely be formed on this specific issue.”
💬 Baghaei on Clause 13 of the MoU: “During this 60‑day period, we will only discuss the nuclear issue, sanctions removal, and the implementation mechanism for the remaining clauses.”
💬 “Clause 13 specifies that negotiations toward a final agreement will only begin once we are assured that implementation of Clauses 1, 4, 10, and 11 has commenced and is sustained.”
💬 “Any continued aggression by the “israeli” regime against #Lebanon will constitute a violation of the other side’s commitments under the memorandum.”
💬 “We do not separate the US from the #Zionist regime — but their differences in approach and methods are clearly evident.”
💬 “The Zionist regime does not want to give any chance to any diplomatic process. But it is the US’s responsibility to compel the regime to respect #America’s commitments to Iran under this document.”
💬 Baghaei, referring to the #JCPOA experience, explained Clause 14: “To ensure this memorandum is accepted by international actors, we need a legal framework — and that is a #UN Security Council resolution.”
💬 “At the same time, we know that the US does not adhere to its international commitments. Yet, it has used that same mechanism to attack and sanction many countries. The guarantee for implementing this memorandum is our power — the leverage the #Iranian nation has built over this period.”
💬 “The Friday session was confirmed until a few hours ago — but when it was decided that the presidents of the two countries (Iran and the US) would sign the memorandum, it was agreed to pause the Friday session for now.”
💬 “Our work is not finished — we are only at the start. The defenders of the homeland in diplomacy need the support and encouragement of the people, just as much as those on the military front.”
💬 “Our hope is that the people will continue to stand firm and trust their officials — just as they have shown over the past 110 days.”
💬 “The sense of strength that every Iranian feels today is unprecedented. The war that was imposed on us has only made us more powerful.”
💬 “We fought against two nuclear powers and many regimes that supported them — whose goal was the collapse of Iran — and we did not give up an inch of our land. Every patriotic person has now understood that separating the #IslamicRepublic from Iran is an illusion.”
💬 On the difference between Iran today and 60 days ago, Baghaei recited: “‘They will not cause you any harm beyond a trifling annoyance; and if they fight you, they will turn their backs [and flee], then they will not be helped’ (3:111). This is God’s promise.”
💬 “Our people have transformed their grief — from the loss of their loved ones, from schoolchildren to our #MartyredLeader — into an epic rage in defense of Iran.”
💬 On the road ahead for the Iranian negotiating team: “Our work as diplomats is certainly not easier than that of the defenders of the homeland standing at the launch pads and behind the trenches. Perhaps it is even harder — because we must look into the eyes of enemies we know have committed terrible crimes, and negotiate with them to secure the rights of our people and consolidate our achievements.”

| 14 | 🇮🇷 #BREAKING: #Iran FM Spox Baghaei:
💬 “We said from the very beginning that Iran’s enriched materials will not be transferred abroad. The other side repeatedly made excessive demands — but they ultimately led nowhere.”
💬 “The dilution of enriched materials is not a new issue. It was proposed solely to close the door on options that are absolutely unacceptable to us.”
💬 “The memorandum text has been signed in two languages. This reflects the height of our transparency in communication. Had only the English version existed, it would have been open to subjective interpretation. The Persian text is fully consistent with the English one.”
💬 “The number of clauses is not what matters — what matters is that national interests are secured within the agreement. For us, the criteria were the operational guidelines issued by the Supreme National Security Council following the #ceasefire.”
💬 “During this 60‑day period, the other side must not reinforce its military presence in the region — any such action would constitute a violation of the memorandum.”
💬 On Clause 10: “One of the #US sanctions has been the ban on #Iranian oil sales, which has imposed significant costs on us. The other side has committed to lifting it — not on paper, but in practice.”
💬 “The oil embargo on Iran must be lifted — not merely on paper, but with all its necessary requirements.”
💬 “This is a commitment that begins today and must continue throughout the negotiations until a final agreement is reached.”
💬 “We are not relying solely on the other side’s written promises.”
💬 “We did not negotiate only about this text.”

💬 “We will use every mechanism, institution, and international opportunity to secure our rights — and we will not miss any chance to document, pursue, and expose the crimes committed against the #Iranian nation.”
💬 “Some of the damage inflicted on Iran cannot be resolved with numbers and figures. We will forever remain claimants regarding these crimes.”
💬 “If the Americans cause a breach [in implementation], we will cause a breach. Commitment for commitment. It is not acceptable that we fulfill our obligations while the other side evades theirs.”
💬 “We will monitor the implementation of the other side’s commitments without any leniency. We will only fulfill our commitments when the other side fulfills theirs.”

💬 “Iran’s defense capabilities will not be discussed in any process or with any party.”
💬 “The mechanisms for managing the #StraitOfHormuz have largely been finalized with #Oman.”
💬 “Iran will charge fees for services provided in the Strait of Hormuz.”
💬 “This mechanism and arrangement for managing the strait are currently being developed.”
💬 “We began consultations with Oman a long time ago — and we have also spoken with several other countries.”
💬 “The management mechanisms for the Strait of Hormuz are now largely settled with Oman.”
💬 “Safe passage will be ensured while preserving the sovereignty and authority of the #IslamicRepublic of Iran over the Strait of Hormuz.”
💬 “The Strait of Hormuz is a matter between Iran and Oman — as they are the only two littoral states of the strait.”

| 18 | 🇮🇷 #BREAKING | #Iran FM Spox Baghaei:
• #Ceasefire deal doesn’t mean forgetting the past.
• Implementation is harder than drafting — especially with unreliable partners.
• MoU limits talks to nuclear & sanctions only.
• #Geneva ceremony still on — awaiting mediator feedback.
• 60‑day negotiation window starts now — extendable.
• Blockade was to be lifted in 30 days — but after “israel’s” Dahieh strike & Iran’s threats, #US agreed to immediate action. Our ships are already moving freely. Iran’s commitments begin after signing.
💬 Baghaei: “Signing a ceasefire agreement at this stage does not mean we have forgotten the past or that we have set aside the costly lessons we have learned.”
💬 “Our work is now harder than before — because implementing international agreements is always far more difficult than drafting them, especially when dealing with parties that do not honor their commitments.”
💬 “The diplomatic apparatus, backed by the full support of the people and trust in God, has achieved a text that we believe secures the interests and welfare of the country.”
💬 “From now on, we must all ensure that in implementation, we act in a way that compels the other side to abide by its obligations. This is very important.”
💬 “The memorandum text explicitly emphasizes that negotiations will take place exclusively on the nuclear issue and sanctions removal.”
💬 “The Friday ceremony in Geneva is still on the agenda — but we will have to see what the two sides reach through mediators in the coming hours.”
💬 “The #IslamicRepublic’s wise decision was not to negotiate on the nuclear issue at this stage. It was agreed to focus on ending the war — and we have done that.”
💬 “From the moment the memorandum enters into force — which is now — we will have 60 days to negotiate on the nuclear issue and sanctions. If an agreement is reached sooner, that would be better. But given the complexity of the issues, 60 days is a reasonable timeframe. And if necessary, it can be extended.”
💬 “It was agreed that the blockade would be lifted within 30 days, and Iran would reciprocate regarding the #StraitOfHormuz. But following the “israeli” regime’s attack on Dahieh and the serious threats made by Iran, urgent negotiations took place — and it was decided that the US would fulfill its commitments immediately.”
💬 “Our monitoring has confirmed that our ships have entered and exited ports without any problems — and this commitment (the US lifting the blockade) has already begun. Our own commitments will start after the signing of this document.”
