عن عمرو بن أبي عمرو الشيباني عن أبيه قال: تكلم أبو جعفر المنصور في مجلس فيه أعرابيّ فلحن، فصرَّ الأعرابي أذنيه، فلحن مرة أخرى أعظم من الأولى، فقال الأعرابي: «أفٍّ لهذا ما هذا؟» ثم تكلم فلحن الثالثة، فقال الأعرابي: «أشهدُ لقد وليتَ هذا الأمر بقضاء وقدر».

It's often neglected that many of the Enlightenment philosophers never intended to drag politics down to the level of the common man, but rather to raise the latter to the level of the aristocrat. This elevation was never conceived merely as a quantitative increase in literacy and technical skills, but as an education in the fullest spiritual sense: the cultivation of reason, judgment, agency, liberty, self-command, dignity, and the acceptance of the aristocratic risk of death. Liberty was imagined not as a refuge for the timid but as the burden of those capable of bearing it. The citizen was expected to inherit the inner discipline once demanded of the noble. For instance, the French Enlightenment is often used as a synonym for democracy because of its subsequent influence on the French Revolution and the rest of the world, but, as a matter of fact, most of its major philosophers and leaders were not egalitarians in the contemporary liberal sense. We see thinkers like Voltaire and Montesquieu expressing their deep mistrust of mass rule and admiring educated elites. Jean-Jacques Rousseau demanded a citizen of exceptional, almost Prussian, civic virtue rather than an average individual. In Prussia, Immanuel Kant and Wilhelm von Humboldt saw freedom as the product of Bildung, which is a lifelong cultivation of reason, discipline, and character. The Enlightenment still believed in man. Equality was not conceived as the abolition of hierarchy, but as its transfiguration. Blood would be replaced by merit, privilege to character, nobility to refined spirit. It didn't image its utopia as a world without ranks, but of one in which everyone was summoned to become worthy of them. Its greatest illusion was not reason, but the conviction that excellence could become something universal. But the average man has proved that he will always shrink before the aristocratic risk of death. As a result, higher education has merely succeeded in polishing the forms of servitude. The master–slave dialectic therefore reveals not the possibility of human transcendence, but its impossibility: the slave does not overcome his condition but merely reproduces it under new names. Liberal democracy proved victorious because it is more in line with the defeatist nature of the average man. It displaced a utopian leftist ideal founded upon freedom, discipline, self-overcoming, and the willingness to risk death with one devoted to leveling, comfort, security, and universal redemption. It did not abolish moral absolutism; it merely redirected it toward the lower instincts of self-preservation, reducing virtue to the measure of the average man.
