Hydrosalpinx and blocked fallopian tubes are closely related, but they are not exactly the same thing. Both can affect a woman’s ability to conceive, but the difference lies in what is happening inside the tube. A blocked fallopian tube simply means that something is preventing the egg and sperm from meeting. This blockage can occur anywhere along the tube. It might be caused by past infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, or scar tissue from surgery. When the tube is blocked, the egg cannot travel from the ovary to the womb, and fertilization cannot take place naturally. Hydrosalpinx, on the other hand, is a specific kind of blocked tube where the fallopian tube is not just closed, but also filled with fluid. The word “hydro” means water, and “salpinx” means tube. This fluid usually builds up because of previous infections or inflammation. The problem with hydrosalpinx is that the fluid inside the tube can sometimes leak into the uterus and make it harder for an embryo to implant. Even if the other tube is open, that fluid can still reduce the chances of pregnancy. So while all hydrosalpinx cases involve blockage, not all blocked tubes are hydrosalpinx. One is a general obstruction, and the other is a blockage with fluid inside.
