Democrats have spent years branding voter ID laws as tools of suppression, fighting them in courtrooms while Republicans in Congress pushed the SAVE Act to add a federal proof-of-citizenship mandate to voter registration. Last Friday, Wolf Blitzer interviewed Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger about legal challenges to the Trump administration’s new Postal Service directives on mail-in voting. During the exchange, Blitzer suggested that 𝐔.𝐒. 𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐩𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐯𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 would have their ballots affected by the crackdown. Spanberger didn’t correct him — she told him his claim was true.
It wasn’t. That means a sitting Democratic governor sat across from a national anchor and let a 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐯𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 go unchallenged, on live television, rather than tell viewers the truth. It took CNN itself three days to clean up.
This is the same playbook that’s followed Trump’s election-integrity push all year: cast basic ballot-security measures as an attack on the 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐩𝐬 those measures don’t touch, let the claim run through a news cycle, and quietly correct it once nobody’s watching.
