Dolly Parton was not gone twenty-four hours before the National Organization for Women rushed out a statement crowning her a feminist icon, and the online left declared her a fallen ally. NPR, CNN and a dozen other outlets picked up the truncated version and ran it as proof Dolly had joined the cause. The words that would have complicated the narrative — the words that actually reveal what she believed — never made it past Billboard’s edit.
This was not a one-time slip. Dolly spent decades refusing to hand either party a mascot. “𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘥𝘰 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘴,” she told ABC in 2018 when a reporter tried to bait her into comparing Donald Trump to a lecherous sitcom villain. She turned down the Presidential Medal of Freedom three separate times — twice from Trump, once from Biden — specifically so no one could read a political message into the acceptance. President Trump, for all his instincts to fight back, honored what Dolly actually wanted. The left couldn’t manage the same restraint for even a single day.

California wasn’t running the only version of the scam. The scale is staggering: Kennedy puts the total theft at 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 $𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫, siphoned from a program meant for the sick and dy∗ng while Washington looked the other way for decades.
