| 4 | US Looking Into Strike on Ship in Strait of Hormuz; Apple Hikes iPad & Mac Prices on Memory Shortage
25 June 2026
📉 S&P 500 Index 7,357.49, (-0.01%)↓
📈 Straits Times Index 5,218.96, (0.06%)↑
📈 Nikkei 225 Index 72,366.34, (4.61%)↑
📈 Gold Spot 4,026.73, (0.68%)↑
The S&P500 closed unchanged amid Apple weakness on price hikes, which was fueled by MSFT price hikes; and as Micron induced pre-market strength faded. This comes despite a solid set of macro prints (better PCE, smaller claims, stronger GDP & durable goods). US futures edged higher. The Nikkei 225 opened lower in early Asian trading.
🚨 Brent rose as a ship was hit by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz. A White House official said it was too soon to say who attacked the vessel, after a WSJ report said the US accused Iran. The UN is pausing evacuation operations in the waterway after the incident.
🗣 Tehran proposed charging fees for security and other services in the strait, the WSJ reported. Marco Rubio rejected the idea of tolls.
🛢 Persian Gulf crude exports have recovered to at least 75% of prewar levels, though some tankers are still turning back instead of crossing the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi Arabia is set to resume loadings at its Ras Tanura terminal.
🇯🇵 Sanae Takaichi is overhauling Japan’s budgeting process with a new multi-year framework to finance its spending policies, following her announcement of a ¥370 trillion ($2.3 trillion), 14-year investment program.
🇮🇶 Iraq stepped up its push for higher OPEC production quotas to recoup oil sales lost during the Iran war, even raising the prospect of leaving the group. It later clarified it has no current intentions to withdraw from the group.
🏛 The Fed’s John Williams said rates are well positioned to return inflation to the central bank’s 2% target.
🤖 OpenAI is leaning toward holding off its IPO until next year 2027, the NYT reported. Softbank (-11.69%) tumbled today.
🇯🇵 Sanrio (+7.51%) climbed today after the company gave a full-year forecast that was above expectations. It sees operating income of ¥89.5b for FY27.
🍎 Apple (-6.15%) fell after it raised prices globally on all Macs, iPads, home devices and the Vision Pro as it seeks to offset rising costs caused by the memory shortage, amplifying memory costs concerns. It left iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods prices unchanged.
🎮 Microsoft (-3.45%) also declined after it announced its third Xbox console price increase in 13 months, raising prices by $100 or $150, depending on storage capacity, starting Aug. 1.
🌐 Memory names climbed following announcements of price hikes by Apple and MSFT, Sandisk (+21.97%), Western Digital (+4.9%), Seagate (+3.23%). Semiconductor equipment makers also rallied, Applied Materials (+13.42%), KLA (+7.62%), Lam Research (+7.20%).
🔥 Micron (+15.81%) surged in extended trading after its revenue guidance crushed estimates and gave an upbeat forecast. It sees 4Q revenue to be $49b to $51b, beating estimates for $43.2b. CEO Sanjay Mehrota said there is "no line of sight" to when supply will catch up with demand, and will persist beyond CY2027.
🔎 Bayer ADRs (+16.98%) surged after the US Supreme Court threw out a $1.25 million jury verdict, shielding the company from tens of thousands of claims that its Roundup herbicide should have been labeled with a cancer warning.
🛄 Trip.com ADR (-12.55%) plunged after the online travel agency missed estimates and guided for slower 2Q revenue growth. | 80 |

The Nikkei 225 and KOSPI both opened higher in early Asian trading. The dollar rose to a 7-month high after 3 straight days of gains, creating headwinds for Asian currencies.
🛢️ Crude futures are trading in a contango structure that signals oversupply as product flows pick up through the Strait of Hormuz. Brent fell below $74 a barrel, while WTI continued its drop even as dwindling stockpiles at Cushing, Oklahoma, dipped beneath 19 million barrels.

🇺🇸 Trump squabbled with Republican senators after he abruptly canceled plans to sign a bipartisan bill aimed at lowering housing costs, demanding passage of new voting restrictions first. US new-home sales unexpectedly fell 7.3% last month even as heavy discounts failed to offset high mortgage rates.
🇮🇳 India and the US concluded fresh trade talks, but there was no clarity on a deal following Trump and Narendra Modi’s G7 discussions.
🇨🇳 China’s EV exports climbed to a record high of $9.2 billion in May , extending a surge stoked by elevated oil prices linked to the Iran war.
🇰🇷 SK Hynix announced plans for a US stock listing, seeking $29b in the offering. It expects ADRs to begin trading on July 10 and intends to use proceeds to build additional capacity and buy EUV machines.
