| 7 | Trump Warns Iran, Imposes New Canada Tariffs as AI and Oil Stay in Focus
21 July 2026
Market Snapshot (Previous Close)
📈📉 S&P 500 Index 7,443.28 (-0.19%)↓
📈📉 Straits Times Index 5,498.95 (-0.19%)↓
📈📉 Nikkei 225 Index [Market Closed]
📈📉 Gold Spot 4,008.03 (-0.23%)↓
⚠️ Geopolitical tensions remained elevated after President Donald Trump vowed that Iran "will pay" following the deaths of three US soldiers. The warning came despite renewed diplomatic efforts to broker a ceasefire, while Houthi threats to impose a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia kept investors focused on potential disruptions to global energy supplies. Oil prices extended their gains.
📉 US markets ended modestly lower as investors weighed geopolitical risks and higher Treasury yields. The S&P 500 slipped 0.19%, while the Dow Jones fell 0.6%. Investors continued rotating toward shorter-dated US government bonds amid expectations that elevated yields could keep the Federal Reserve on hold.
🇨🇦 Trade tensions resurfaced after the US announced fresh tariffs on Canada. Washington plans to impose a new 50% tariff on selected Canadian goods in 30 days, although key imports including energy, critical minerals, automobiles and metals will remain exempt.
💻 AI remained one of the market's biggest themes. Google reportedly climbed after news it is developing a new server chip to improve the efficiency of its Gemini AI models, while China's Z.AI completed a major data centre built entirely with domestically produced chips. Meanwhile, Moonshot AI founder Yang Zhilin continued to draw attention following reports of the company's upcoming Hong Kong IPO.
🛍️ Alibaba was hit with a record regulatory fine in Europe. The European Union imposed a €550 million penalty on the Chinese technology giant for selling illegal products, marking the largest fine issued under the bloc's content moderation rules.
🇨🇳 Markets are looking ahead to China's upcoming Politburo meeting. Goldman Sachs expects policymakers to adopt stronger easing rhetoric, with the current economic backdrop bearing similarities to conditions before Beijing's major stimulus measures in 2024.
🛢️ Oil markets remained supported by ongoing supply concerns. Shipowners are demanding substantial bonuses for crews transiting the Strait of Hormuz, while oil exports through the Caspian Pipeline Consortium's Black Sea terminal were suspended after another drone attack. Brent crude rose to nearly US$89 a barrel.
👀 Market Focus: Investors will monitor South Korea's trade data, Taiwan's June export orders and Hong Kong's inflation figures for fresh signals on regional economic activity. Markets will also remain highly sensitive to developments in the Middle East and any further announcements on US trade policy, as both continue to influence global risk sentiment. | 78 |

| 12 | US-Iran Tensions Lift Oil Above US$90; Moonshot AI Targets Hong Kong IPO
20 July 2026
Market Snapshot (Previous Close)
📉 S&P 500 Index 7,457.69 (-1.01%)↓
📉 Straits Times Index 5,509.43 (-0.54%)↓
📉 Nikkei 225 Index 64,141.12 (-4.03%)↓
📈 Gold Spot 4,017.39 (+1.03%)↑
🛢️ Geopolitical tensions remained firmly in focus after the US and Iran exchanged fresh attacks. Washington confirmed the death of a third US service member in two days, while Iran targeted infrastructure in Kuwait. Concerns over potential supply disruptions pushed Brent crude above US$90 during trading, reinforcing inflation worries and weighing on overall market sentiment.
📉 Wall Street ended lower as investors turned cautious. The S&P 500 fell 1.0%, while the Nasdaq lost 1.4%, as rising oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty prompted investors to rotate away from risk assets.
💻 China's AI sector continued to attract attention. Moonshot AI is reportedly preparing for a Hong Kong IPO within the next six months while completing a fundraising round that could value the startup at more than US$30 billion. Meanwhile, Alibaba unveiled a preview of its Qwen3.8 Max large language model, intensifying competition in the AI race.
🤖 AI regulation is also gathering pace in the US. The Trump administration is reportedly considering a FINRA-style watchdog to evaluate AI model safety with industry participation, while investors continue debating whether Big Tech's significant AI investments will generate sufficient returns.
🇰🇷 South Korea announced a major market reform aimed at attracting more foreign capital. From January, overseas investors will be able to conduct unlimited Korean won transactions through pre-registered foreign firms without opening domestic won accounts, simplifying access to the country's financial markets.
🇸🇬 Singapore is reportedly exploring additional tax incentives for fund managers. The Monetary Authority of Singapore has held discussions with investment firms on potential tax reductions as the city-state seeks to strengthen its competitiveness as a global asset management and wealth hub.
✈️ Corporate developments remained active across industrials. Boeing reaffirmed plans to raise monthly 737 production despite ongoing supply chain bottlenecks involving engine deliveries and aircraft certification, signalling continued confidence in long-term aircraft demand.
👀 Market Focus: Investors will monitor China's Loan Prime Rates and June foreign direct investment (FDI) data for fresh clues on the country's economic recovery. Markets will also continue tracking developments in the Middle East, with any escalation in the US-Iran conflict likely to drive movements in oil prices, inflation expectations and broader risk sentiment. | 158 |

| 18 | US Stocks Slump on Chip Rout; Eli Lilly Inks US$3.8B Psychedelic Deal
17 July 2026
Market Snapshot (Previous Close)
📉 S&P 500 Index 7,533.77 (-0.51%)↓
📉 Straits Times Index 5,539.38 (-0.37%)↓
📉 Nikkei 225 Index 66,835.54 (-2.79%)↓
📉 Gold Spot 3,976.50 (-2.07%)↓
US equities slumped, with the S&P 500 falling 0.5% and the Nasdaq Composite sinking 1.5%, as weakness in chipmakers dragged down broader markets. A gauge of semiconductor giants fell 4.3% amid concerns that massive AI investments may not justify current lofty valuations.
📺 Corporate earnings momentum faced a setback as Netflix dropped postmarket after forecasting a second consecutive quarter of slowing sales growth, doing little to ease investor anxiety about the streaming giant’s future trajectory.
💊 In the healthcare sector, Eli Lilly agreed to acquire clinical-stage psychedelic drugmaker AtaiBeckley in a deal worth up to US$3.8 billion, marking a significant investment into neuroplastogen-based treatments for mental health conditions.
🍎 Apple is reportedly readying its biggest overhaul to the iPad mini in half a decade. The updated model is expected to feature an OLED screen for the first time as the tech giant refreshes its tablet lineup.
🤖 Artificial intelligence developments remained in the spotlight, with Google reportedly running months behind on delivering its Gemini 3.5 Pro AI model. Meanwhile, Oracle's ambitions to dominate the AI buildout are reportedly facing hurdles over funding its ongoing spending spree.
📈 Oil markets saw Brent crude hover around US$84 a barrel. In the broader energy sector, Chevron is set to sign agreements with Iraq to invest in its 460,000 barrel-a-day West Qurna-2 field, alongside the smaller Nasiriyah field.
💰 Debt and equity markets saw notable activity as AI cloud provider CoreWeave seeks to raise US$2.6 billion in debt. Meanwhile, India's SBI Funds Management saw its US$1 billion IPO oversubscribed by 42 times, driven by strong institutional demand.
📊 On the macroeconomic front, US retail sales rose by a modest 0.2% last month. Federal Reserve officials noted that inflation remains "too hot," calling for "modestly higher" rates to help lower price pressures, which pushed mortgage rates to their highest in almost a year.
👀 Market Focus: Investors will monitor Singapore's non-oil domestic exports, Japan's short-term bill auction, and upcoming corporate earnings for fresh signals on consumer demand, technology, and global economic growth. | 185 |
