Wall Street Slumps as US Begins Fresh Strikes on Iran Over Stalled Talks; SpaceX IPO More Than Four Times Oversubscribed
11 June 2026
📉 S&P 500 Index 7,266.99, (-1.62%)↓
📉 Straits Times Index 4,958.85, (-1.28%)↓
📉 Nikkei 225 Index 64,179.27, (-1.89%)↓
📉 Gold Spot 4,072.31, (-4.42%)↓
Oil rose while US equity futures fell after US forces launched fresh strikes on Iran, injecting volatility into markets amid a marginally softer Core CPI which did little to change bets that the Fed will hike rates by the end of the year. The Nikkei and KOSPI both opened lower.
🚨 The US military said it had launched strikes against “multiple” targets in Iran for the second day in a row. This followed strikes on Tuesday in retaliation for the downing of a US Apache helicopter.
🗣️ Donald Trump said the bombing will stop soon but resume tomorrow if no deal is reached, Fox News reported. He pledged to strike Iran “very hard” after accusing the country of dragging out peace talks. Trump is considering an operation big in scale but short in duration, Axios reported. Tehran said it will hit new US targets if Washington takes action, Tasnim reported.
🚢 State TV reported that the Strait of Hormuz has been completely closed to all types of vessels, including commercial ships. But Centcom rebutted Iran's claims, saying that "commercial ships are continuing to transit in and out of the Strait of Hormuz tonight".
🔎 US Core CPI rose 0.2% MoM, below estimates for 0.3%. Headline CPI, which includes energy prices, rose 0.5% MoM, meeting estimates.
🚀 SpaceX’s IPO has drawn billions in orders from Middle East wealth funds, according to people familiar. Market operators are looking to ensure a smooth trading process, with the listing said to be more than four times oversubscribed.
🇺🇸 Trump said he would not renew the USMCA, setting the stage for months or years of negotiations. The US Treasury refunded nearly $22 billion in tariff revenue collected from importers in May.
🇯🇵 The BOJ’s Kazuo Ueda has been hospitalized and is expected to miss next week’s policy meeting. Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino will serve as acting chair while another deputy will host a post-meeting press conference.
🌍 Narendra Modi and Trump are expected to meet at next week’s G-7 summit in France, officials said, in their first face-to-face talks since a fallout over Pakistan last year. A formal bilateral meeting hasn’t been announced.
🍞 Wheat futures advanced as traders anticipate a key USDA report Thursday will show lower production estimates for all varieties of winter wheat, while slightly increasing soft-red output.
🥩 US beef prices hit a fresh record as drought and the reemergence of the New World screwworm are keeping the herd smaller for longer. Americans paid 13% more for a pound of ground beef in May year-over-year.
👀 All eyes are on ECB rate decision today at 20:15 SGT.
🤖 The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (-3.57%) saw a 2nd straight day of decline, Marvell (-5.35%), ARM (-5.37%), Qualcomm (-6.92%), AMD (-4.86%), Broadcom (-5.12%), Micron (-4.70%).
🛢️ Energy stocks rallied, while travel/cruise and mining fell after US struck Iran. Exxon (+1.15%), Chevron (+1.63%), United (-6.25%), Delta (-5.79%), Royal Caribbean (-4.79%), Newmont (-5.86%), Barrick Mining (-5.01%).
🚚 Trucking companies plunged after Amazon announced an expansion of its less-than-truckload service to all destinations in the US, including 3rd party warehouses, distribution centers, and retail partners. Old Dominion Freight Line (-5.14%), FedEx Freight (-6.96%), Saia Inc (-3.25%).
