David Harvey - Marx and Capitalism
My guest is David Harvey, a scholar, geographer and social theorist.
He is a Distinguished Professor of Anthropology and Geography at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He has served on the faculty of Johns Hopkins University and held the Halford Mackinder Chair in Geography at the University of Oxford.
Harvey is perhaps most well known for his university course on Marx’s Capital. For over 50 years, he has taught and studied these foundational texts. He is considered by many to be the most influential Marxist scholar alive today. We discuss his 29th and most recent book The Story of Capital, out now from Verso Books.
Our conversation explores the foundation for a Marxist analysis of value and political economy. What are the defining features of this new era? In a period of mounting crises, what forces might intervene to correct our stagnant economic systems?

What can such authoritarian testerics tell us about the maturing fascisms of the age? The term “liberal fascisms” is something of a paradox, and Žižek offers scant help in explaining it. Yet it is a useful provocation. It is clear that, for over a decade now, there has been a symbiosis between hard-center liberalism and the rising far right. This has been mutually beneficial: The threat of fascism whips the electorate into line behind austerian liberals, while the resulting social misery and anomie provides the emotional mulch for rising fascism. Both prefer it if the left is excluded from the picture. In the context of Gaza, of course, that symbiosis has become a global coalition headed by Washington. Žižek is right to say, riffing on Max Horkheimer, that “whoever is not willing to talk (critically) about liberalism should also keep quiet about fascism.”

This book gathers essays written by Geoffrey Bennington since the death of his friend Jacques Derrida in 2004. All continue the ongoing work of elucidating difficult and complex thought, often enough with reference to Derrida's persistent interrogation of the concepts of life and death, mourning and melancholia, and what he sometimes calls 'half-mourning'. Not Half No End relates this 'ethical' interruption of mourning to the persistent but still ill-understood motif of interrupted teleology, which, it is argued here, is definitive of deconstruction in general. This suspension or interruption of the end (which is none other than differance 'itself') has all manner of consequences for our thinking, and for how we attempt to categorize that thinking (as epistemological, ethical, political or aesthetic, for example). Not Half No End moves through all these domains, and the whole of Derrida's rich and varied corpus, in a weave of styles from the expository and analytic to the autobiographical and confessional in the ongoing process of deconstruction. | 315 |

Long a dominant figure in the French human sciences, Pierre Bourdieu has become internationally influential in the fields of sociology, anthropology, and cultural studies. American reception of his works, however, has lacked a full understanding of their place within the broad context of French human science. His individual works separated by distinct boundaries between social science fields in American academia, Bourdieu's cohesive thought has come to this country in fragments.
Bourdieu: Critical Perspectives provides a unified and balanced appraisal of Bourdieu's varied works by both proponents and skeptics. The essays are written from the varied viewpoints of cultural anthropology, ethnomethodology and other varieties of sociology, existential and Wittgensteinian philosophies, linguistics, media studies, and feminism. They work around three main themes: Bourdieu's effort to transcend gaps between practical knowledge and universal structures, his central concept of "reflexivity," and the relations between social structure, systems of classification, and language.
Ultimately, the contributors raise a variety of crucial theoretical questions and address problems that are important not only to understanding Bourdieu but to advancing empirical work of the kind he has pioneered. In an essay written especially for this volume, Bourdieu describes his own "mode of intellectual production" and the reasons he sees for its common misunderstanding.
