🔥[[Someone Unversed in the Scholarly Method, Even When He’s Right, He’s Wrong]] The great Imām Muḥammad ibn Idrīs al-Shāfiʿī (d. 204 AH-رحمه الله-) discusses in al-Risālah the scholarly method of mastering Arabic to extract meanings and rulings from the wordings of the revealed texts: «هٰذِهِ الْوُجُوهُ الَّتِي وَصَفْتُ اجْتِمَاعَهَا فِي مَعْرِفَةِ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ مِنْهَا بِهِ، وَإِنِ اخْتَلَفَتْ أَسْبَابُ مَعْرِفَتِهَا، مَعْرِفَةٌ وَاضِحَةٌ عِنْدَهُمْ، وَمُسْتَنْكَرَةٌ عِنْدَ غَيْرِهِمْ مِمَّنْ جَهِلَ هٰذَا مِنْ لِسَانِهَا، وَبِلِسَانِهَا نَزَلَ الْكِتَابُ، وَجَاءَتِ السُّنَّةُ، فَتَكَلَّفَ الْقَوْلَ فِي عِلْمِهَا تَكَلُّفَ مَا يَجْهَلُ بَعْضَهُ. "These aspects whose convergence I have described — by which the people of knowledge come to know [the meanings], however much the means of that knowledge differ — are a plain knowledge to them, but a thing rejected as strange by others: those ignorant of this dimension of [the Arabic] tongue — the very tongue in which the Book was revealed and the Sunna came. Such a one has forced himself to speak about its knowledge, forcing what he is partly ignorant of. وَمَنْ تَكَلَّفَ مَا جَهِلَ وَمَا لَمْ تُثْبِتْهُ مَعْرِفَتُهُ، كَانَتْ مُوَافَقَتُهُ لِلصَّوَابِ — إِنْ وَافَقَهُ — غَيْرَ مَحْمُودَةٍ، وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ، مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْرِفُهُ، وَكَانَ بِخَطَئِهِ غَيْرَ مَعْذُورٍ إِذَا نَطَقَ فِيمَا لَا يُحِيطُ عِلْمُهُ بِالْفَرْقِ فِيهِ بَيْنَ الْخَطَإِ وَالصَّوَابِ.» And whoever forces what he is ignorant of and what his knowledge has not established — his agreement with what is correct, if he happens to agree, is unpraiseworthy, and Allah knows best, since it comes from where he does not [truly] know it; and he is inexcusable in his error when he speaks on that in which his knowledge does not comprehend the distinction between error and correctness."
