Grand Theft Auto – The Legacy Review https://www.ign.com/articles/grand-theft-auto-the-legacy-review The original GTA’s prehistoric brand of open-world freedom is fascinating in the context of everything that’s come since, but it demands patience, precision, and a paper map by your side.

Stellar Blade: Blood Rain Dev Shift Up Releases Entirely AI-Generated K-Pop Music Video Starring Evie and Pretty Much Everyone Hates It https://www.ign.com/articles/stellar-blade-blood-rain-dev-shift-up-releases-entirely-ai-generated-k-pop-music-video-starring-evie-and-pretty-much-everyone-hates-it Stellar Blade: Blood Rain developer Shift Up has sparked a backlash for releasing an entirely AI-generated music video starring protagonist Evie.

Will those initiatives help? Probably not, as Sony says that it will still "cautiously" move forward with its plans, but it is aware of the strong emotional connection that people have with physical media. Sony CFO Lin Tao said during a Q&A investors meeting that the "digitalization of content" has been steadily progressing and that Sony won't be doing a U-turn. Sony also stands to gain financially (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/why-is-sony-killing-discs-its-all-about-profitability-and-control-expert-says/) from the decision, as it'll earn 100% of the profits from sales of its first-party game. With physical sales of third-party PS5 games also coming to an end in 2028, the company can also claim a cut of those sales when people purchase games through its online marketplace. In other news from Sony's Q1 report, PS5 sales are slowly closing in on the 100 million lifetime sales milestone, monthly active user numbers are up, and company profits are up despite game sales remaining flat, thanks to tariff refunds and favorable exchange rates.

Sony’s Latest PS5 Sales Data Shows Digital Pulling Even Further Ahead https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-latest-ps5-sales-data-shows-digital-pulling-even-further-ahead/ Sony's plans to embrace an all-digital future (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-confirms-playstation-disc-production-will-end-in-2028/) are starting to gain ground, as the company has confirmed that 82% of all PS5 games, microtransactions, and DLC from Q1 2026--covering April 1 to June 30--were sold digitally. This is an increase of the previous ratio of digital games sold across the entire 2025 financial, which averaged 78%. It is worth noting that each quarter in that period had different numbers--83% in Q1 2025 FY, 72% in Q2, 76% in Q3, and 85% in Q4--so there's still plenty of time to see what the average ratio is when the next three quarters are added in. That quarter also saw several big games launch for PS5, such as Starfield, Saros, and 007 First Light. While the numbers point toward the inevitability of a digital-only games marketplace future for PlayStation, a section of the playerbase is still aiming to convince Sony to reverse course and keep offering physical games to some extent. Sony's social platforms have been under siege (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/over-220000-people-petition-sony-not-to-kill-physical-playstation-game-discs/) from a dedicated number of people who reply to every post with calls to keep physical games alive, and a week-long boycott of the company will kick off later in August.

Monthly active user numbers are also up by 2 million, with Sony recording 125 million people using its services. Overall, sales are holding steady across game and network divisions, but profits did increase by 37% thanks mostly to US tariff refunds and favorable exchange rates. Nintendo also benefited from tariff refunds (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendo-will-not-refund-tariff-fees-it-passed-onto-customers-saying-they-received-exactly-what-they-bargained-and-paid-for/) lately, but the company refuses to pass any refunds on to its customers. Sony has also noted that it has "secured the quantity of memory necessary" for all the PS5 consoles it expects to manufacture and sell this calendar year. The next few months will be a crucial period for Sony, as the release of GTA 6 (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/grand-theft-auto-6-everything-we-know/1100-6503729/) is expected to give the company a sales bump during the holiday season.

PS5 Is Closing In On 100 Million Sales, But It’s Losing Ground To The PS4 https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps5-is-closing-in-on-100-million-sales-but-its-losing-ground-to-the-ps4/ Sony is starting to feel the pinch of console price hikes, as the last quarter--April 1 to June 30 of 2026--saw the company sell 1.6 million PS5s, a slight increase when compared to the previous quarter that saw 1.5 million consoles sold. That's a steep decline of 36% (https://www.sony.com/en/SonyInfo/IR/library/presen/er/pdf/26q1_sonypre.pdf) when compared to the same period in 2025, and so far, PS5 lifetime sales have reached 95.3 million units sold. In comparison, the PS4 had moved 100.2 million units by the same point in its lifecycle, albeit with the help of regular discounts and the MSRP of the system decreasing over time. The PS5 hasn't enjoyed the same benefits as its predecessor, as the ongoing shortage of RAM and other crucial components has resulted in PS5 console prices increasing (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps5-xbox-and-switch-2-heres-how-their-prices-have-changed-since-launch/) instead of decreasing, a first for PlayStation hardware. Sony noted that revenue from hardware sales is also down by almost 10%, while software unit sales are up from 65.9 million to 66.1 million, year-on-year. Despite its decision to end PS5 disc production being met with almost-universal backlash, digital game sales also increased from 78% to 82% during Q1.

Sony Defends Going Digital, But Says It Understands Players’ Love Of Physical PS5 Games https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-defends-going-digital-but-says-it-understands-players-love-of-physical-ps5-games/ Sony's decision to kill PS5 disc production in 2028 (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-confirms-playstation-disc-production-will-end-in-2028/) has been met with massive criticism since it was first announced, and the company has acknowledged the backlash. In a Q&A session (https://www.irwebmeeting.com/sony/fast/20260731/N5SWmcH4/202703_1q_02_en/index.html) for investors following the posting of its Q1 financial results today--running from April 1 to June 30--Sony revealed more details about its decision to shift toward an all-digital future, and how the announcement had been met with "strong views" from its community of gamers. "We announced that from January 2028 onwards we will no longer be manufacturing game discs, so one-and-a-half years ahead," Sony CFO Lin Tao said (via an interpreter). "There are various reasons we made this decision, the biggest being that digitalization of content overall has been progressing. That's the big factor. It’s not just for PlayStation, but for all kinds of content; digitalization is progressing. When we think about the future, we put in a lot of thought and time, and we cautiously considered this, and we came to this conclusion and we're going to cautiously move this forward." Tao added that Sony has since then received "various opinions" from people with "strong views," acknowledging how its consumers have a strong emotional attachment to physical media. "We understand those emotions; we want to consider that. And in the future digital ecosystem, how we engage the gamers is something that we would like to continue to explore," Lin concluded. Sony's plans to move past physical media have been the subject of a lot of debate over the last couple of weeks. Digital adoption at Sony has surged in the last few years, with 82% of consumers choosing this option. Sony also stands to benefit financially (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/why-is-sony-killing-discs-its-all-about-profitability-and-control-expert-says/), as it'll get to keep all of the revenue from selling a first-party game and take a cut of the profits from third-party sellers through its online marketplace. While PlayStation gamers have been vocal (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/over-220000-people-petition-sony-not-to-kill-physical-playstation-game-discs/)--going so far as to voice their displeasure with every single social media post that Sony makes and organizing a rally for August--developers and publishers have also voiced their opinions. Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot believes that there could be a benefit (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ubisoft-boss-has-a-hot-take-on-sony-killing-game-discs/) to gaming being a digital-only hobby, while Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser says that Sony should provide an option for players (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/rockstar-co-founder-and-gta-co-creator-on-physical-games-companies-should-provide-it-if-people-want-it/) to have physical copies still--even if digital games offer several benefits. There might be some hope on the horizon, however, as Sony has suggested that there could still be code-in-a-box releases for games--an option that GTA 6 is using for its physical release in November (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-physical-copies-wont-include-discs-just-download-codes/).

Originally scheduled to launch in June, Hell Let Loose: Vietnam emerges from behind development lines in August. The 50v50 multiplayer shooter offers a hardcore alternative to games like Battlefield and Call of Duty, as players will have to hunker down, establish lines of communication, and work as a team to survive the harsh jungles of Vietnam. Mafia: The Old Country - Man of Honor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rh9_zPBYDIY&pp=ygUtTWFmaWE6IFRoZSBPbGQgQ291bnRyeSAtIE1hbiBvZiBIb25vciB0cmFpbGVy0gcJCaMLAYcqIYzv Release date: August 14 Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S Mafia: The Old Country was a sleeper hit last year (https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/mafia-the-old-country-review-look-but-dont-touch/1900-6418393/), as the moderate price, surprisingly high production values, and rock-solid gameplay made it a digestible experience. If you've been looking to return to Sicily, you can do just that in the Man of Honor expansion. Priced at $10, the expansion adds two more story chapters to the game, and it follows Enzo Favara on an assignment to assist Ennio Salieri, the iconic Mafia series villain. Alongside the new chapters, Free Ride mode is also being expanded, and you can add to Enzo's arsenal with new weapons, vehicles, and charms. The Sinking City 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JZMMLLn00I Release date: August 18 Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S The first Sinking City game from Frogwares was a flawed gem when it was first released several years ago, and for the sequel, the studio is diving into a world of survival-horror. We're still concerned that The Sinking City 2 is playing it a little safe (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-sinking-city-2s-shift-to-survival-horror-leaves-it-treading-for-air/1100-6539890/) as it mixes mystery with Lovecraftian-inspired dread, but Frogwares has been known to pull off a few surprises with its games, like the brilliant Sherlock Holmes adventures. At the very least, it looks like a comfortable thriller, and for genre fans, slipping into a well-worn pair of horror-pants might be a winning idea. Mortal Shell 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHQXkfdhk7E Release date: August 20 Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S Six years after the first Mortal Shell game launched, players can once again step into a world of cold steel and challenging souls-like action. Developer Cold Symmetry isn't aiming to give From Software a few sleepless nights, as the studio has designed a world that is deliberately compact, respects your time, and features unlockable Shells to collect across dozens of dungeons--including some gooner armor (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/mortal-shell-2-gameplay-debut-introduces-three-new-ways-to-survive-the-nightmare/1100-6539151/). Billed as a standalone sequel, you won't need any experience with the first Mortal Shell game to play the sequel. Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwtBqmAXDAE&pp=ygUgQWxpZW5zOiBGaXJldGVhbSBFbGl0ZSAyIHRyYWlsZXI%3D Release date: August 25 Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S It's time for another bug hunt! Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/aliens-fireteam-elite-2-revealed-and-you-can-almost-hear-the-motion-tracker-already/1100-6539841/) sees the gung-ho action of the first game make a comeback, but this time, developers Cold Iron Studios and Daybreak Game Company are turning it up to 11. Squads have been expanded into four-person teams, player classes are being improved, and a new Specialist role will allow players to mix abilities to create the ultimate Colonial Marine. Alongside a bigger arsenal of weapons, the game will also feature all-new Xenomorphs to menace your team, including one new variant that takes free hugs to a new extreme. Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70gPRab24xY Release date: August 27 Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, Switch

Grounded 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4mfW2QVrC0 Release date: August 11 Platforms: PS5 (early access) Obsidian is now focused on expanding the world of Fallout--and has been hit hard by Microsoft's sweeping layoffs at Xbox (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-layoffs-studio-closures-and-spin-offs-everything-announced-today/)--but the studio is also preparing for the PlayStation 5 launch of Grounded 2 this month. Arriving alongside the Into the Abyss update, PS5 owners can check out the early access survival-crafting game and see how it has grown (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/grounded-2s-toxic-tangle-update-adds-new-map-area-and-buggy/1100-6537697/) over the months since it first launched. Pro Jank Footy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UR_LfpTkYT8&pp=ygUWUHJvIEphbmsgRm9vdHkgdHJhaWxlcg%3D%3D Release date: August 12 Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 Australian Rules Football is easily the toughest contact sport on the planet--and no, slap-fighting doesn't count--and it's being brought to life as a retro-inspired romp in August. As if the original game wasn't brutal enough, Pro Jank Footy reimagines the sport with high-energy arcade sensibility--think classic '90s games like NBA Jam and NHL '94. It packs random power-ups from a pool of over 150 and plenty of absurdist comedy. It should be a ripper when Australia's greatest sport hits PC and consoles. Wild Blue Skies https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azfptYj4GHQ&pp=ygUXV2lsZCBCbHVlIFNraWVzIHRyYWlsZXI%3D Release date: August 13 Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S The new new remake of Star Fox 64 (https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/star-fox-review-switch-2/) is a pretty decent game, but Wild Blue Skies looks like it'll show Fox McCloud a thing or two when it takes off. Legally distinct from Nintendo's cult-classic on-rails shooter, Wild Blue Skies shares some similar DNA with it, including fast-paced shooting and anthropomorphic animal pilots. Billed as a modern take on the classic adventures of the '90s, it looks like a colorful blast from the past that's easy to learn. If you're on PC, you can grab a demo (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1921490/Wild_Blue_Skies/) for it right now. Duskfade https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2izW9xJCsw&pp=ygUQRHVza2ZhZGUgdHJhaWxlcg%3D%3D Release date: August 13 Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 If you've been feeling nostalgic for an old-school third-person adventure in the same vein as Jak and Daxter, then don't sleep on Duskfade. Weird Beluga Studio's love letter (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/duskfade-looks-like-the-jak-and-daxter-spiritual-successor-youve-been-waiting-for/1100-6530807/) to action-platformer classics of the past looks and plays great--check out the demo if you're on PC--and it also features a striking clockpunk aesthetic that helps it stand out from the pack. A heartfelt tribute to the golden age of 3D action-platformers, the game also has a mature angle to its tale, as it deals with themes of loss and grief. EA Sports Madden NFL 27 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqQtZ9xm_uI&pp=ygUVbWFkZGVuIG5mbCAyNyB0cmFpbGVy Release date: August 13 Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S While most annual sports franchises offer iterative improvements year-over-year, EA’s Madden series has been an exception to that rule. This year’s edition looks like it’ll introduce another set of sweeping changes under the hood, building on Madden NFL 26’s upgrades that saw the additions of Coach abilities, playsheets, weekly strategies, and much more. The biggest change this year is the introduction of the Persona Engine, which EA says will help turn the NFL experience into a dynamic game. Hell Let Loose: Vietnam https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zdQFX0Li8Q&pp=ygUfSGVsbCBMZXQgTG9vc2U6IFZpZXRuYW0gdHJhaWxlcg%3D%3D Release date: August 13 Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S

The Biggest New Game Releases Of August 2026 https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-biggest-new-game-releases-of-august-2026/ We're firmly in the second half of the year, and ahead of a massive September with several high-profile releases, August is shaping up to be a noteworthy opening act. Between a Marvel fighting game that's aiming to push the tag-fighter concept to new levels, a return to a galaxy far (far!) away for some tactical sci-fi strategy, and the unhinged chaos of Australian Rules Football, there's plenty on the horizon that'll be eating into any free time you've been trying to save up. Don't believe us? Then check out our list of the biggest games arriving in August on PC and console, and don't forget to check out our list of all the upcoming games in 2026 (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/2026-upcoming-games-release-schedule/1100-6534941/). ReStory https://youtu.be/uJl20DGhjfw Release date: August 6 Platforms: PC One of the best demos of the June Steam Next Fest was ReStory, a wholesome game about running a little electronics repair shop. Not just a fun game about disassembling and cleaning gaming consoles--including some classic Atari hardware–the game also features a story, cute characters, and some admin on the side as you manage finances while improving your skills. Throw in a lo-fi soundtrack that helps you get into the zone and satisfying repair gameplay mechanics, and this could be the cozy sleeper hit of the month. Beast of Reincarnation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2OFgl_O6j0&pp=0gcJCZkLAYcqIYzv Release date: August 4 Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S Game Freak and co-developer Fictions aren't waiting until the end of August to drop their new game, a one-person and one-dog post-apocalyptic adventure. Blending Sekiro-like and tactical-RPG gameplay (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/beast-of-reincarnation-has-sekiro-vibes-but-it-wont-beat-you-down/), Beast of Reincarnation is shaping up to be something special (https://www.gamespot.com/videos/beast-of-reincarnation-could-be-something-really-special/)--and we also can't get enough of those wonderful parrying "PING" sound effects (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/beast-of-reincarnation-perfect-parry-ping-makes-me-want-to-git-gud/), either. Big Walk https://youtu.be/orNw5VJ4us0 Release date: August 4 Platforms: PC, PS5, Switch 2 Untitled Goose Game developer House House makes its return in August with Big Walk, and this time, peace is an option. A cooperative game that revolves around talking and walking--fans of The West Wing will probably dig it--the goal is to explore a massive open-world environment. House House has added several other methods for communication. There's no real danger in this world, and the Australian walkabout vibes could make this the next big social hit. Lies of P: Complete Edition https://youtu.be/7Z6abyyE0dE Release date: August 6 Platforms: Switch 2 If the high-risk, high-reward gameplay in Beast of Reincarnation isn't enough for you, you can also check out Lies of P on Switch 2 this month. The Lies of P: Complete Edition is launching as a digital game first (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/lies-of-p-complete-edition-switch-2-preorders-include-some-cool-collectibles/)--a physical version will follow on October 2--and it includes the base game plus every DLC and post-launch update for the original release. In case you missed it when it first came out, Lies of P reimagines the story of Pinocchio as a Bloodborne-inspired romp that mixes an elegant art direction with grueling boss battles and twisted remixes of classic fairy tales. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPXIhvQfQ7E&pp=0gcJCZkLAYcqIYzv Release date: August 6 Platforms: PC, PS5

Radar Festival takes place between July 30 and August 1, 2027. You can sign up to their mailing list (https://mailchi.mp/773aad0f0673/signupradar27) for 25% off tickets. Gordon is currently working on the soundtrack (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/if-you-liked-dooms-heavy-metal-soundtrack-mick-gordons-next-project-will-go-even-harder/1100-6536078/) to the upcoming game, Defect.

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/after-a-decade-of-waiting-mick-gordon-is-finally-performing-doom-live/ Fans of one of gaming's most iconic soundtracks will soon get to experience it in a whole new way, as composer Mick Gordon is set to play the Doom soundtrack live on stage for the first time as the headliner at Radar Festival in the UK next summer. Although Gordon played a medley at The Game Awards in 2016, this will be his first full-length set with a live band, orchestra, and full production. Gordon is known for defining Doom's identity with crushing riffs, industrial synths, and earth-shaking electronic production. His work on 2016's Doom and 2020's Doom Eternal established a new benchmark for video game soundtracks, with titles like Rip & Tear (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZMg9ryeWOw), BFG Division (https://youtu.be/QHRuTYtSbJQ?list=RDQHRuTYtSbJQ), and The Only Thing They Fear Is You (https://youtu.be/_nJNBDmm07Q)becoming firm fan favorites. They've earned millions of streams and remain staples of game music playlists years after release. https://youtu.be/QHRuTYtSbJQ?list=RDQHRuTYtSbJQ While the music has always had the scope for being performed live, Radar Festival marks the first time it will be performed with both a live orchestra and full backing band. If you've long hoped to experience the soundtrack in a live setting, that time has finally come. It's an even rarer opportunity considering Gordon's split from developer id Software (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/doom-eternal-composer-distances-himself-from-the-n/1100-6476272/) after the release of Doom Eternal raised questions about whether he'd be able to perform these tracks live again.  Speaking exclusively to GameSpot ahead of the reveal, Gordon said he hopes that the live performance opens up the potential for more collaborations between festivals and video game music. "I hope this thing shows the potential of this type of stuff to publishers and developers," he said. "The game isn't just that gap between the player and the television." Gordon explained how the collaboration came to be. "Ever since Doom 2016 … there's been rumblings and multiple attempts to try and get some version of this into a live setting," he said. "I've been trying for a number of years to get this thing off the ground. Then out of the blue Joe [James, Radar Festival organizer] came to me with a really awesome opportunity through Radar." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZMg9ryeWOw Gordon commended Radar Festival for its audience blend of metalheads and gamers, since the festival features three days of live alternative music alongside a marketplace where developers and players join together to preview new games, run tabletop sessions, or just chat about all things gaming. Gordon noted the crossover between metal music and gaming spanning is pretty wide, adding, "For a long time, I've wanted to take what I love about video game music and put it into a live setting that matches the energy you would get from a live rock or metal show … Radar feels like the absolute perfect [festival] to do it. There's no better," he said. But there was a time when Gordon thought a production of this magnitude might not be possible. "We released Doom Eternal on March 20, 2020, and lockdown was already in effect. I remember thinking, 'Shit, anything we could have done around this exact moment of the game coming out is gone now.' It felt, not like it was over or that we wouldn't be able to do it, but certainly if there was an opportunity it was slowly passing by. But it's interesting--music just survives."  Gordon has confirmed that he'll be bringing the legendary Doom Machine for the performance--the custom instrument he created specifically to compose the soundtracks. Theatrics will be in full swing too, as festival organizer Joe James tells GameSpot, "We're looking at all options to make it epic. Fire, screens, projection mapping are all on the table."
