| 4 | Diablo 4 Season 14’s Worst Mythic Change Is No More: “Not Every Idea Lands”
https://www.gamespot.com/articles/diablo-4-season-14s-worst-mythic-change-is-no-more-not-every-idea-lands/
Diablo 4 (https://www.gamespot.com/games/diablo-iv/) Season 14's most controversial change, only being able to equip one crafted-Mythic item at a time, is now a thing of the past.
In a surprise patch (https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/d4/t/311a-patch-july-16-2026/263234) on July 16 for PC (and coming sometime on July 17 for console players), Blizzard opted to remove the one equipped crafted-Mythic restriction introduced as part of Season of Death Awakening, as well as increase Mythic and Iconic Mythic drop rates from the new seasonal Lair Boss.
Blizzard announced the season's other most controversial addition, the Mythic Upgrade function of the Horadric Cube, will see changes too, but not until next season. As it currently works, Mythic Upgrade isn't really an upgrade at all, and instead takes a Unique item and then transforms it into an entirely different Mythic Unique item, much to the confusion of players. For reasons that aren't elaborated on in the patch notes, that change won't come until Season 15 several months from now.
Both changes have been the subject of frustration in the Diablo community, with both prominent content creators and the wider community largely lambasting the changes to Mythics (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/diablo-4s-massive-mythic-item-changes-arent-finding-many-fans/), the crafted-Mythic equip limit, and the Mythic Unique upgrade system.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nuu7aOAw0is
Dan Tanguay, design director for live service on Diablo 4, offered a brief explanation for the changes in a forum post (https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/d4/t/season-of-death-awakening-changes-and-next-steps/263235). He said the team has heard player feedback surrounding topics like Mythic Unique drop rates, the equip limit, and more.
"Seasons are where we experiment with new ideas and push Diablo 4 in new directions," Tanguay said. "Not every idea lands exactly as intended, but we'll continue listening to your feedback, addressing what's not working, and applying those lessons to future seasonal updates."
The surprise patch 3.1.1a update on July 16 comes just a few days after a July 14 update increased drop rates for Pandemonium Fragments needed to upgrade Uniques into Mythics using the cube, as well as a reduced the number of fragments needed. That resulted in players being able to craft more Mythics than ever before (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/diablo-4-update-will-drown-you-in-mythics/), though they were still limited to equipping just one unless they were able to get extremely lucky and find a usuable Mythic out in the wild. Now, at least, players can actually deck themselves out in the purple items they craft, should they so choose.
While the changes outlined above are likely to be well received in the Diablo 4 community, Blizzard has stopped short of walking back its Mythic changes entirely. Season 14 controversially nerfed the game's previously existing Mythics (now called Iconic Mythics) as part of an overhaul it coined "Mythic Uniques 3.0."
Post-Season 14, any Unique item ccan potentially be found (or crafted into) an even stronger Mythic version, in theory opening up more diverse build options for Diablo 4's endgame. More than just a temporary seasonal change, Blizzard stated it intends Mythics 3.0 to be Diablo 4's new normal going forward, and in an interview with GameSpot, said the changes were for the good of the game's "long-term health." | 6 | Mox Amber, Mox Opal, and Chrome Mox
These are some of the most powerful cards in the Commander format, but their infrequent reprintings have sent the price of each of these cards into the stratosphere. Placing them in Mystery Booster Commander would be a fantastic way to make this product unmissable.
Imperial Seal
Everyone talks about Demonic Tutor being a fantastic card, and it is, but Imperial Seal does a bang-up job of finding the one card you need at any moment in exchange for a small bit of life. Imperial Seal hasn't been reprinted since 2022, while both Demonic Tutor and Vampiric Tutor have been reprinted since then. It's time to give the Seal its due.
Now, don't think I'm proposing that every idea I've shared here go into the set; one or two items from this list would be incredible. However, for Mystery Booster Commander to make the mark Wizards wants, it's going to have to pack some heaters. These would get the job done. | 37 |

With so much unknown about Mystery Booster Commander outside of this initial announcement, I immediately wondered what sort of reprints I'd want to see in a Mystery Booster Commander set, whether it's because they're Commander format staples or they're expensive and could use a reprint. Here's a quick list of five ideas that first came to mind.
The Fetch Lands
OK, this is cheating because it's ten cards in one entry, but the more reprints we can get of the ultra-powerful fetch land cycle, the better. Bloodstained Mire, Arid Mesa, and the rest each run around $10 a pop at minimum--and that's with the Special Guest reprints in Tarkir: Dragonstorm and their run in Modern Horizons 3. More fetch lands, please.
The Ancient Dragon cycle from Battle for Baldur's Gate
Ancient Copper Dragon headlines this group, but all five of them make an impact in the decks that feature them; ask anyone who has watched an Ancient Brass Dragon revive an entire graveyard's worth of creatures. We've seen a few reprints of Ancient Copper Dragon in bonus sheets here and there, but the majority of this cycle has been ignored. Time to fix that.
More cards with Background
This would fit into the "59 new cards" section of the set, but I find Background to be a very neat mechanic. Having anything other than a creature in the command zone always makes for interesting deck building possibilities, and a handful of new creatures with "Choose a Background", as well as a few new Backgrounds, would be fun. | 31 |

Next came Tolabow, Loch Rascal, a cute litter otter in blue. Tolabow shows off the new Rulebreaker mechanic, which allows a creature to break one of the rules of the Commander format if it is set as your commander; Tolabow, despite being mono blue, can have instants and sorcery spells of one additional color not in its color identity, and any basic land cards to pay for that second color's cards. | 20 |

| 11 | Mystery Booster Commander Combines Two Of Magic: The Gathering’s Best Things, And I Can’t Wait
https://www.gamespot.com/articles/mystery-booster-commander-combines-two-of-magic-the-gatherings-best-things-and-i-cant-wait/
As part of MagicCon Amsterdam, Wizards of the Coast has laid out its entire 2027 plan for Magic: The Gathering's in-universe slate, including three new sets and four more MagicCon events spread throughout the year. Nestled among those announcements, however, was one that made my ears perk up: Mystery Booster Commander.
Mystery Booster 1 and 2, for those unaware, are specially-curated sets filled with reprints that are only available at MagicCon events and through Convention-In-A-Box drops on the Secret Lair website. In Mystery Booster 2's case, a handful of cards from Magic: The Gathering Arena saw their first-ever printings, while other reprints featured special Future Sight frames.
Mystery Booster Commander looks to continue that tradition, but with the ultra-popular casual format its primary focus. The set will feature packs of 20 cards each, and will include a myriad of reprints from throughout Magic's history that can be drafted into on-the-fly Commander decks for quick games.
In a Mystery Booster first, this Commander version will feature 59 all-new cards only found in these packs, with the MagicCon panel previewing two of them. First, we saw Joven and Chandler, a legendary creature card that combines two recognizable faces from 1995's Homelands set into a single card. | 18 |
| 12 | After making its debut in March of the Machines, Zhalfir was phased out of Dominaria, leaving the Zhalfirin Void in place of the technologically advanced kingdom. Now, Magic: The Gathering is visiting the plane in its own set simply titled Zhalfir. Set to release on October 1, Zhalfir will notably see the return of Teferi Akosa, Magic's master of chronomancy.
"Zhalfir will showcase its namesake like never before, lush with vibrant magic and rooted in its storied past, as its people find their place in the Multiverse," its press release reads. "Players can immerse themselves in the beauty of Zhalfir and harness innovative new forms of magic. The minds behind this plane have crafted some especially mind-bending cards, each embracing the unique visual design of Magic's take on the afrofantasy genre."
Illuminated by the light of five suns, Zhalfir exists in a state of never-night. However, its spirit realm--rich in mysteries, danger, and the ghosts of Zhalfirians past--is in eternal darkness. Inspired by the black diaspora, Zhalfir seeks to expand both the afrofantasy genre and Magic as a whole. Cultural consultants, afrofuturist authors, and black history professors all lent their talents and knowledge to this set in an effort to ensure the highest level of authenticity.
In addition to all of these announcements, Wizards of the Coast also revealed Commander Mystery Boosters are on the way (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/mystery-booster-commander-combines-two-of-magic-the-gatherings-best-things-and-i-cant-wait/). With plenty of legendary reprints, 59 entirely new cards tailored for the Commander format, and new mechanics like Rulebreaker, these packs will allow players to host Commander drafts.
This is just the start of several big announcements from Wizards of the Coast. Be sure to check in for more updates, exclusive reveals, and more. | 16 |

| 14 | It's been nearly five years since we last set foot in the Japanese-inspired land of Kamigawa, and 23 since the plane was first introduced with Champions. Thankfully Magic: The Gathering is rearing up to take us back to its neon-drenched streets with Kamigawa: Titanbreach. Set to release on June 4, Titanbreach sees an all-out clash ensure between two iconic Magic planes: Kamigawa and Ikoria. According to narrative designer Neale LaPlante Johnson, this set will feature "one of the largest scale combats we've ever seen in Magic: The Gathering."
"When an Omenpath opens above the neon-lit skies of Towashi, a huge mass of Ikoria crashes through, unleashing mayhem. The people of Kamigawa must band together to stop the monsters of Ikoria that threaten to stomp, scorch, and shatter their home," Wizard of the Coast wrote in its press release promoting the set.
Titanbreach is set to release about a month after MagicCon: Tokyo, meaning we can probably expect some big announcements to happen when the con makes its Tokyo debut.

| 16 | The first of Magic: The Gathering's three in-universe sets for 2027 is Nauctis: The Sunken Realm. Slated to release on February 5, Nauctis takes players to an all-new, undersea realm filled with merfolk, homarids, humans in pressurized suits, and plenty of aquatic creatures. The set will also include "deities who rule over the currents." According to senior art director Forrest Schehl, Nauctis leans heavily into high-fantasy and is "bursting with color and culture."
Though you might assume this underwater setting caters heavily to mono blue players, the set's designers assured players that they have poured time and effort into envisioning how each mana color expresses itself sub-nautically. However, don't expect any of these cards to benefit any of your flying-focused decks; according to the team, this set is perhaps the first major booster to not feature any cards with flying.

MagicCon: Amsterdam is officially in full-swing, and with it comes some major announcements for Magic: The Gathering's future. After sharing a closer look at Reality Fracture (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/how-reality-fracture-will-push-the-boundaries-of-magic-the-gathering-and-its-printers/1100-6539817/), Magic's upcoming and world-altering set that sees Planeswalker Jace Belren reshape the game's multiverse, Wizards of the Coast offered fans a highly anticipated first look at everything coming in 2027.
Next year, Magic: The Gathering is kicking off a brand new story arc supplemented by three in-universe sets: Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, Kamigawa: Titanbreach, and Zhalfir. Notably, these sets mark the first underwater plane, a return to fan-favorite plane Kamigawa, and our first trip to Zhalfir following it being phased out by Teferi Akosa. Wizards also shared that three Universes Beyond sets are coming as well, though details regarding those will be shared at a later time.
2027 also marks the return of Magic's Pro Tour Hall of Fame, which will take place in Minneapolis from June 18-20. Additional details regarding the event will be shared at a later date.
For players less inclined to go pro but eager to take part in the community, Magic is also providing more convention dates than ever before. Next year, MagicCon is coming to two US cities, returning to Amsterdam, and making its debut in Asia with MagicCon: Tokyo. Below are the dates of each convention:
MagicCon: Detroit - February 26-28
MagicCon: Tokyo - May 14-16
MagicCon: Las Vegas - August 27-29
MagicCon: Amsterdam - December 3-5
As you can see, there have been a lot of major announcements at this year's MagicCon Amsterdam. To help you wrap you head around them, here is a quick timeline provided by Wizards of the Coast. | 13 |
