💢 Iran’s IRGC Navy says it captured one of the US military’s most advanced unmanned underwater vehicles at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz at dawn, during what it described as a complex intelligence and operational action. According to the statement, the vehicle uses some of the latest underwater technology and entered US military service in 2025. 💢 Russia and Saudi Arabia used their Moscow press conference to signal a much broader strategic relationship, while laying out unusually direct positions on Yemen, the Gulf conflict and Ukraine: 🔻 Yemen: Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan delivered the sharpest remarks of the presser, accusing the Houthis of repeatedly putting their “narrow interests” above those of Yemen and resorting to violence whenever under pressure. 🔻 Faisal said the latest escalation was another attempt by the Houthis to export their internal problems to Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s internationally recognized government. By provoking Riyadh, the Yemeni government, the international community and ordinary Yemenis, he warned, the Houthis are “opening themselves up to what they cannot bear.” 🔻 Riyadh is not closing the door to diplomacy, Faisal stressed, but Saudi Arabia “will not hesitate” to defend itself, protect its interests and support Yemen’s security and stability, adding that the Kingdom will use every available means to fulfill its responsibilities. 🔻 Lavrov likewise called Houthi strikes on Saudi infrastructure, including civilian facilities, counterproductive and rejected attempts to settle the Yemen conflict militarily. Moscow continues to favor direct dialogue between influential Yemeni forces, potentially under UN auspices, using the Saudi-backed roadmap agreed with Yemen’s internationally recognized authorities and Ansar Allah as a basis. 🔻 Iran and Gulf security: Lavrov said Russia regrets that Arabian Peninsula states have been drawn into the US-Israeli military confrontation with Iran. Moscow and Riyadh favor a political settlement and implementation of the June 17 Islamabad memorandum between Washington and Tehran. 🔻 Russia and Saudi Arabia also discussed eventually convening a regional security forum bringing together all Gulf states, Iraq and Jordan, with possible participation by the Arab League, Organization of Islamic Cooperation and even the five permanent UN Security Council members. Lavrov said Russian, Saudi/GCC, Chinese and Iranian security initiatives all move broadly in the same direction. 🔻 Ukraine: Lavrov thanked Saudi Arabia for what he called its “principled, responsible and balanced” position and its contribution to humanitarian efforts and a possible political settlement. Russia, he said, remains ready for negotiations based on addressing the conflict’s “root causes.” 🔻 Lavrov said the Trump administration has shown both the willingness and ability to recognize those root causes, making contacts with US envoys useful. He accused the EU, by contrast, of trying to prevent the discussion from shifting toward a long-term settlement and continuing to pursue Russia’s defeat. 🔻 Economic ties: Faisal said Russian-Saudi cooperation has become important for global energy-market stability and balancing the interests of producers and consumers. He highlighted 13 agreements and MoUs worth SAR 4.8 billion signed during the St. Petersburg forum in June, covering industry, technology, mining, logistics, infrastructure, the digital economy, agriculture and food security. 🔻 Lavrov said bilateral trade rose by almost 40% last year, while both countries intend to maintain close OPEC+ coordination. Saudi tourist arrivals in Russia rose about 35%, with Russian travel to Saudi Arabia growing at a similar pace following the visa-free agreement that entered into force in May. 🔻 Lavrov described the strategic partnership as extending into virtually every field, including investment, joint production, projects in third countries, tourism, culture and cooperation on UN reform aimed at stronger representation for the Global South. 🔻 Intervision: Faisal confirmed that Saudi Arabia and Russia are still discussing when the next Intervision music contest could be held in the Kingdom. 💢NYT - Ukrainian corruption and fraud devour millions of Western aid Corrupt Ukrainian businessmen and politicians preying on the defense procurement sector continue to be a drain on the financial aid provided to Ukraine by the US and Europe, the New York Times laments. 🔹 A weapons plant boss named Leonid Shyman was awarded a $280 million arms deal by the Ukrainian government while being on bail on corruption charges 🔹 Audits discovered multiple instances of Ukrainian companies getting contracts without first proving their ability to deliver the required weapons 🔹 Around $126 million was lost due to bypassing lower bids when awarding weapon contracts without providing any legal justifications 🔹 In 2024 alone, Ukraine lost some $1.2 billion to “fraud, waste and mismanagement” Earlier this year, Ukraine’s anti-corruption watchdog NABU uncovered military-related embezzlement schemes from 2022–2025. Since January 2026, prosecutors have opened 29 defense procurement corruption cases involving 54 suspects, with at least $77 million embezzled or lost. Russia has maintained that Western arms shipments to Ukraine hinder conflict resolution and directly involve NATO countries in the fighting. 💢 Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner and Vladimir Zelensky spoke after US-Ukrainian talks in Kiev, one day after Witkoff and Kushner met Vladimir Putin in Moscow: • Witkoff said President Trump sent him and Kushner to restart negotiations, adding that the US delegation felt good about the results of both the Moscow and Kiev discussions. • Kushner said Trump’s objective is not simply to stop the fighting, but to construct a “peace package” capable of producing a durable settlement, with the US also working closely with European partners. • In Moscow, Kushner said they reviewed ideas that had failed previously and discussed with Putin what Russia, Ukraine and the wider world could gain from a settlement. He described the meeting as constructive and substantive. • The US side wants to return to the trilateral Russia-US-Ukraine format used roughly six months ago. Kushner said Washington has discussed this with both sides and hopes for progress “very soon,” including on broader issues and possible de-escalatory steps. • Kushner said “a lot of new ideas” are being put forward. He stressed that there is now a dialogue and a potential pathway forward, although no agreement is guaranteed and progress could come quickly or slowly. • Asked whether Washington would increase pressure on Russia if diplomacy fails, Kushner did not commit to specific measures, saying Trump has “a lot of different ways to play it”, while his and Witkoff’s role is to pursue a negotiated peace. • Witkoff said he has now made around eight visits to Moscow and has always been treated respectfully by Putin and his team. He argued that relationships with both sides are essential if the conflict is to be resolved and said the US goal is to narrow the outstanding differences. • Zelensky backed efforts to organize trilateral talks, potentially with European partners also involved, saying Ukraine would see what format Russia is prepared to accept. • Zelensky confirmed that “several genuinely new ideas” were discussed in Kiev. He said Ukraine needs time to analyze them before disclosing details publicly and expects Ukraine, the US and Europe to discuss the proposals further in the coming weeks. • Zelensky described accelerated diplomacy as “Plan A” for reducing escalation. He also argued that Ukraine’s stronger battlefield position gives Kiev greater confidence in future negotiations and said that without military strength, Ukraine would face only ultimatums. • On air defense, Zelensky said the US is expected to increase production of Patriot interceptor missiles next year, while Germany has also increased production. He said Ukraine is additionally working toward its own anti-ballistic capability. • Zelensky said 67 Ukrainian companies are working on systems to intercept jet-powered drones, with three to five already demonstrating results and efforts underway to develop mass-production capacity. • On proposed US sanctions against Russia associated with Senator Lindsey Graham, Zelensky said the issue was not raised during the talks.
