Here is why today is so special:
🗓 On July 2nd, Ethiopia celebrates the graduation anniversary of its very first batch of home trained modern medical doctors.
This pioneering class graduated from the Gondar College of Medical Sciences (originally the Public Health College founded in 1954) and the Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital under Addis Ababa University, which officially opened its medical school gates in the mid-1960s. These institutions laid the blueprint for modern healthcare training across the nation.
Long before these schools, trailblazers like Hakim Workneh Eshete (Dr. Charles Martin)—the first Ethiopian western-educated physician—paved the way for generations of brilliant Ethiopian medical professionals to serve their community.
To all the Hakims keeping the nation healthy, thank you for your selfless service!
