✅ Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve has released its first-ever scientific assessment report on the Greater Hog Badger (Arctonyx collaris).
📍 Greater Hog Badger
✅ A nocturnal, fossorial (burrowing) omnivorous mammal and the largest of the three hog badger species.
✅ Locally known as “Mati Gahori” (Earth Pig) in Assam due to its pig-like snout and digging behaviour.
✅ Habitat: Forest floors, grasslands and soft-soil ecosystems.
✅ Distribution: Northeast India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.
✅ IUCN Status: Vulnerable
✅ Protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

✅ Enhances soil aeration and nutrient recycling through burrowing.
✅ Creates micro-habitats that support biodiversity.
