🟢 The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) amended the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, to expressly include E100 alongside E85 in emission certification.
🟢 The amendment creates a regulatory pathway for Flex-Fuel Vehicles (FFVs), taking India beyond the E20 blending stage.
🟢 It is an enabling measure, not a mandatory fuel-switching requirement.
🔆 Understanding Ethanol Fuels
📍 Ethanol: Alcohol (C₂H₅OH) produced by fermenting sugars or starch. It increases petrol’s octane number and supports combustion, but has approximately one-third less energy per litre than petrol.
🟢 E20: 20% ethanol by volume.
🟢 E85: Up to 85% ethanol.
🟢 E100: Predominantly ethanol.
🟢 1G Biofuels: Produced from sugarcane juice, molasses, maize and other food-grain feedstocks.
🟢 2G Biofuels: Produced from agricultural residues, such as rice straw.
🔆 Flex-Fuel Vehicles (FFVs)
🟢 Run on different ethanol-petrol blends within their certified range using a single fuel tank.
🟢 Sensors and engine controls adjust to the fuel mixture, while compatible fuel-system materials resist ethanol’s corrosive effects.
