| 2 | 🔆 Gir Lion Deaths and the Need for Multiple Asiatic Lion Populations
📍 Why in Focus?
✅ Recent deaths of eight Asiatic lions in Gujarat’s Gir landscape due to suspected Babesiosis infection have reignited concerns regarding the long-term conservation of the species and the risks of maintaining a single concentrated population.
📍 Key Highlights:
✅ Babesiosis is a tick-borne parasitic disease caused by Babesia, which infects and destroys red blood cells, leading to anaemia, fever, and sometimes mortality.
✅ The disease is naturally present among livestock and wild ungulates, which act as reservoirs, and usually exists in a host-parasite equilibrium.
✅ Asiatic lions (Panthera leo persica) are largely confined to the Gir landscape of Gujarat, making them vulnerable to epidemics, natural disasters, and genetic bottlenecks.
✅ Experts emphasize establishing multiple geographically separated populations as “safety-net populations” to reduce extinction risks from disease outbreaks.
✅ Unlike Asiatic lions, tigers in India are distributed across 58 tiger reserves, providing greater resilience against localized threats.
📍 Challenges / Issues / Implications:
✅ Single-population risk increases vulnerability to epidemics, forest fires, droughts, and other catastrophic events.
✅ Low genetic diversity due to historical population bottlenecks can reduce disease resistance.
✅ Delay in creating alternative habitats outside Gujarat raises concerns regarding long-term species security.
✅ Mains Question (GS-3 | 250 Words):
“Conservation of endangered species requires not only population growth but also ecological resilience. Discuss the challenges associated with maintaining a single population of Asiatic lions and suggest measures for ensuring their long-term survival.”

| 6 | 🔆 Climate ‘Tipping Points’ Debate at Bonn Climate Talks
📍 Why in Focus?
At the Bonn Climate Talks (June 2026), India sought greater clarity on the use of the term “climate tipping points”, arguing that imprecise terminology may misrepresent scientific evidence and complicate climate negotiations.
📍 Key Highlights:
✅ A climate tipping point is a threshold beyond which the Earth’s climate system shifts abruptly, often becoming difficult or impossible to reverse (e.g., Arctic sea ice, Amazon rainforest dieback, AMOC slowdown, Greenland ice sheet, coral reef collapse).
✅ India urged caution, stating that the term should acknowledge scientific uncertainties and avoid oversimplification in international climate negotiations.
✅ Many climate scientists emphasise that communicating uncertainty strengthens scientific credibility, while improving public understanding and policymaking.
✅ Confusion persists between temperature targets (1.5°C/2°C) under the Paris Agreement and actual climate tipping points—they are not the same.
✅ The debate highlights the need for clear, evidence-based climate communication while ensuring urgency in climate action.
📍 Challenges / Issues / Implications:
✅ High uncertainty in projecting the timing and irreversibility of tipping points complicates policy decisions.
✅ Misuse of scientific terminology can weaken trust and polarise climate negotiations.
✅ Delayed climate action may increase the risk of crossing irreversible Earth system thresholds.
✅ Mains Question:
“What are climate tipping points? Discuss their significance in global climate governance and explain why scientific clarity and effective communication are essential for informed climate policymaking.” (GS III, 250 Words)

| 14 | 🔆 Droughts Can Accelerate Antibiotic Resistance in Soil Bacteria
📍 Why in Focus?
✅ A study published in Nature Microbiology reveals that drought-induced soil stress increases natural antibiotics in soil, accelerating the evolution of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (AMR).
📍 Key Highlights:
✅ Drought conditions concentrate natural antibiotics in soil, favouring the survival and spread of resistant bacteria.
✅ Climate change may worsen Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), with drought-prone countries like India facing greater risks by 2050.
✅ Antibiotic resistance can spread from the environment to humans through horizontal gene transfer, contaminated soil, water, aerosols, and agricultural products.
✅ India’s vulnerability is amplified by frequent droughts, heavy antibiotic use, livestock farming, and weak rural healthcare infrastructure.
✅ Experts recommend a One Health approach, integrating environmental surveillance, vaccination, soil monitoring, and climate-resilient public health strategies.
📍 Challenges / Implications:
✅ Climate change is emerging as a major driver of AMR, beyond misuse of antibiotics.
✅ Lack of integrated monitoring of soil microbes and environmental reservoirs hampers early intervention.
✅ Rising AMR threatens food security, public health, and sustainable agriculture.
✅ Mains Question (GS III | 150 Words):
Discuss how climate change-induced environmental stress can contribute to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Examine the relevance of the One Health approach in addressing this emerging challenge.

| 17 | 🔆 Climate Change Identified as the Primary Driver of Europe’s Record Heatwave
📍 Why in Focus?
A study by World Weather Attribution (WWA) has concluded that climate change is the primary cause of the ongoing record-breaking heatwave in Europe, reinforcing the role of climate attribution science in understanding extreme weather events.
📍 Key Highlights:
✅ The WWA found that human-induced climate change, not El Niño, was the dominant driver behind Europe’s unprecedented heatwave and record temperatures.
✅ Europe has witnessed three major heatwaves in five years, with over 1,300 heat-related deaths reported during the current event.
✅ The study used climate attribution science, which compares today’s climate with a hypothetical world without human-induced warming to assess the role of climate change in extreme events.
✅ Europe is warming nearly twice as fast as the global average, making heatwaves more frequent, intense, and prolonged.
✅ Scientists warn that without stronger global mitigation efforts, heatwaves are expected to increase in both frequency and intensity, despite adaptation measures.
📍 Challenges / Issues / Implications:
✅ Slow progress in achieving Paris Agreement goals and reducing global greenhouse gas emissions.
✅ Increasing threats to public health, agriculture, water resources, and infrastructure due to extreme heat events.
✅ Need for stronger climate adaptation, heat action plans, early warning systems, and evidence-based policymaking.
✅ Mains Question:
Climate attribution science has emerged as an important tool for understanding extreme weather events. Discuss its significance in climate policymaking and examine the implications of increasing heatwaves for India and the world. (GS III, 250 words)
