| 3 | Once upon a time there was a Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) Officer.
In a long ago war, this BDA Officer was ordered to assess damage done against Iraqi SCUD missiles.
When the General wanted to tell the President that his fancy new F-15E Strike Eagles had destroyed all of Iraqβs fixed SCUD launchers, the BDA Officer had to inform him that the evidence showed none had been destroyed.
This made the General angry.
Later the General went on national television to report that his fancy F-15E aircraft had destroyed seven mobile SCUD launchers.
But the BDA Officer had to tell the General that these were only civilian fuel trucks.
The General was so angry he fired the BDA Officer.
But back in Washington DC the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff reviewed the BDA Officerβs report, and has his specialists examine the evidence.
The specialists reported that the BDA Officer was right.
The General had to give the BDA Officer his job back.
The General was then told that his super duper ultra secret commando force had destroyed a SCUD launchers.
But the BDA Officer, after examining the evidence, concluded that the super duper ultra secret commandos had only killed a decoy launcher.
The General got so mad he had the BDA Officer arrested.
The BDA Officer was released only when the evidence, upon review, confirmed his assessment.
The moral of the story?
Believe the professionals.
Leave BDA to the professionals.
Donβt believe the Generals.
Or Defense Secretary.
Or White House Press Secretary.
Or the President.
Because they arenβt professional BDA Officers.
They are politicians.
And politicians lie.

| 14 |  Looking over history, and how much labor was worth in silver or gold at various points in history, I think it's safe to say that the American salaries and standards of living that existed last century were hilariously unsustainable no matter who was in charge of the country.
According to Google's AI (which might not be super accurate with these numbers), a typical artisan worker in the 2nd century AD, close to Rome's peak, made about 2-3 denarii per day, we'll call it 2.5 as a baseline estimate.
Each denarius was about 4.5 grams of silver, so about 11.25 grams of silver per day was a typical Roman wage for a skilled worker.
In today's silver prices that is worth about $27-$28, and that was a whole day's labor for a skilled worker in peak Rome. As I've told you guys before, the federal minimum wage in the early 1960s was about $1.25, and five silver quarters (before they were debased of course) was about 28 grams of silver, with a melt value of about $63. So in other words, an unskilled minimum wage worker in the 1960s made more per hour than a skilled Roman artisan would have made per day in the 2nd century. The early 1960s minimum wage was comparable to a six figure salary today in terms of its value.
This is a huge disparity of course. I think looking back at history you'll see the Roman situation is a lot closer to the norm than the American situation, and in a way what is going on in America right now is sort of a regression to the mean.
The Roman daily wage (about $28 as I stated earlier) is about $7,280 per year, and according to Google's AI the median wage today globally is about $10,000 per year which isn't that far off from the Roman number, a lot closer to the Roman number than even the modern American number as we slowly regress to the mean. | 28 |
