بس جانت أكو شغلة غريبة ما يكدر مبدأ اللذة يفسرها: ليش ضحايا الحروب والكوارث بهواي مرات يرجعون يعيشون فترة الصدمة مالتهم بشكل أحلام أو ذكريات تقتحم وعيهم بأوقات مو مناسبة؟
هالظاهرة سماها فرويد بالـ repitition أو التكرار، لأن الضحية "يكرّر، ويُعيد عَيش" الحدث المأساوي اللي صارله. إذا جان مبدأ اللذة هو الحاكِم، فأحلامنا كلها جانت رح تصير حلوة ولطيفة، والتكرار أصلًا ما جان رح يصير لأن ما بيه أي متعة. كل اللي بيه هو إعادة عيش نفس الألم والمأساة. لهذا بسنة 1920، فرويد أدرك بأنّ أكو دافع ثاني يتحكم بالبشر ونشر مقالة هي ما وراء مبدأ اللذة (Beyond the pleasure principle).
الفكرة هي أنّ الكائنات الحية كلها اجت بالأصل من مادة غير حية، أَي ميتة، فالأصل بالحياة هو الموت، وهو يسبق الحياة ويستمر من بعدها. لهذا فالكائنات الحية (ومن ضمنهن البشر) تمتلك نوعين من الدوافع بداخلها: الأول هو الدافع نحو الموت (Death drive)، اللي يدفع بالكائن الحي نحو حالته الأصلية، نحو الموت والتحلل ورجوع المادة الحية إلى أُصولها غير الحية. هالشي ممكن يفسرلك التكرار اللي يصير وية ضحايا الصدمات، ويفسرلك ليش لما تتقرب من حافة وادي أو بناية عالية، تجيك رغبة مفاجئة بأن تكمز أو تدفع اللي بصفك. كلهن تعبيرات مختلفة لمَيل الحياة وحنينها للرجوع لحالتها الأولى، الموت.
أما الثاني فهو الدافع الجنسي اللي يسعى لتجدد الحياة واستمراريتها. فرويد يسمّيه Eros، إله الحب الجسدي بالأساطير اليونانية، وهو يمثّل رغبة الحياة بالمقاومة والبقاء حتى وإنْ كان الصراع بالنهاية عقيم أو غير مُجدي.
بالنسبة لفرويد، الدافعَين ذني (إرادة الحياة وإرادة الموت) يتصارعن بداخلنا وبداخل كل الكائنات الحية بشكل أو بآخر، ويستشهد بشوبنهاور لما كال بأنّ "الناتج الحقيقي للحياة والهدف منها هو الموت." في حين أنّ الرغبات الجنسية تمثّل إرادة الحياة.

From the point of view of the self-preservation of the organism among the difficulties of the external world, [the pleasure principle] is from the very outset inefficient and even highly dangerous. Under the influence of the ego's instincts of self-preservation, the pleasure principle is replaced by the reality principle. This latter principle does not abandon the intention of ultimately obtaining pleasure, but it nevertheless demands and carries into effect the postponement of satisfaction, the abandonment of a number of possibilities of gaining satisfaction and the temporary toleration of unpleasure as a step on the long indirect road to pleasure. The pleasure principle long persists, however, as the method of working employed by the sexual instincts, which are so hard to 'educate', and, starting from those instincts, or in the ego itself, it often succeeds in overcoming the reality principle, to the detriment of the organism as a whole.

فرويد بالبداية جان يكول أنّ اللاوعي يحكمه ويسيطر عليه دافع واحد هو مبدأ اللذة (The pleasure principle)، اللي هو ببساطة رغبة الإنسان بالحصول على اللذة والمتعة الفورية، مثل المتعة الجنسية، والمتعة الإجتماعية اللي نحصلها من الطلعات والأصدقاء، ومتعة الأكل وغيرها...
مشكلة هذا المبدأ أنّه غير عملي بل وحتى خطير. لأن السعي نحو اللذة الفورية بكل وقت يخلينا ما ننتبه لمخاطر الحياة ولا للمستقبل. كل اللي نفكر بيه هو شلون نشبع كل رغباتنا الآنية بدون أنْ نخطط أو نفكر باللي رح يصير اليوم أو حتى الساعة الجاية. باختصار، مبدأ اللذة يخلي غرائزنا تسيطر علينا تمامًا، أكثر حتى من الحيوانات.
لهذا، يكلك أنّ الذات Ego طوّرت مبدأ ثاني، يسميه فرويد بمبدأ الواقعية (The reality principle). هالمبدأ همين يسعى نحو اللذة بالنهاية، لكن يكدر يأخرها للمستقبل أو يبدل المتعة الآنية بأُخرى مستقبلية. شغلته ببساطة أنْ يوفّق بين سعينا نحو اللذة وبين الواقع وعقباته ومخاطره. هذا المبدأ هو اللي يسمحلك مثلًا بأنْ تتجاوز رغبتك بالأكل لما تكون مسوي ريجيم، علمود تحصل لذة ثانية مستقبلية هي أنّ جسمك يصير أرتب أو صحتك تتحسن ومن هالسوالف.
