The concept of intelligence provides a useful example. Early investigations often treated intelligence as a single, measurable characteristic that could be summarized by a numerical score. Contemporary research examines various dimensions of cognition, including reasoning, memory, problem-solving, and learning, rather than relying exclusively on a single indicator. A similar pattern can be observed in ecology. The term “stability” was once used primarily to describe ecosystems that changed very little over time. More recent studies, however, suggest that healthy ecosystems may experience considerable variation while continuing to maintain their essential functions. As a result, scientists now place greater emphasis on adaptability and recovery than on permanence alone. These developments demonstrate that scientific concepts are shaped by ongoing investigation rather than fixed definitions. As new evidence accumulates, researchers refine existing terminology so that it more accurately reflects observed phenomena. For this reason, understanding science involves more than memorizing definitions. It also requires recognizing that scientific concepts evolve alongside the knowledge they are intended to describe, allowing explanations to become increasingly precise over time.
