For example, an ecosystem may recover from a wildfire through the regeneration of plant species, even though its appearance and species composition temporarily change. Similarly, a business may survive an economic crisis by modifying its products or services rather than maintaining its previous strategy. Studies have identified several factors that contribute to resilience. Diversity is one of the most important, since systems with multiple components or alternative pathways are generally less vulnerable to disruption. Learning also plays a crucial role. Organizations and communities that evaluate past experiences are often better prepared to respond to future challenges. However, resilience has its limits. Extremely severe or repeated disturbances may exceed the capacity of a system to recover, resulting in permanent change or collapse. Consequently, resilience should not be viewed as an unlimited ability to overcome adversity.
