| 3 | Hatred and madness (c.1898/99)
🎨 Paško Vučetić (1871-1925)
“Hatred and Madness” by Paško Vučetić is a disturbing and unsettling painting that delves into the depths of human emotions and explores the themes of hatred and revenge. Created around 1898/99, the artwork showcases Vučetić’s early artistic style and reveals his fascination with the sinister.
The central figure of the painting is a deranged man whose bloodshot eyes and ghastly complexion convey his madness. He has achieved his sinister goal after digging in the soil, surrounded by the scattered remains of a woman who had scorned him in life. Consumed by an unrelenting hatred for her, he has exhumed her skeleton and intends to display it on a pillory. In his hand, he holds the woman’s skull and probes its eye socket with a long finger while emitting a scream, depicting his disturbed state of mind.
