| 8 |  MIAW first declared his own father and even his brother, Sulayman ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhab, to be apostates. He went further by attributing corporeal characteristics to Allah, describing Him in terms that critics argue resemble the attributes of created beings.
He condemned seeking intercession through the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and other righteous saints, and rejected the practice of visiting the graves of the Messenger ﷺ and the saints.
In the eyes of his critics, he went so far as to assume an authority in defining Islam that seemed to place his own interpretations above the established understanding of generations of Muslim scholars.
The Wahhabi movement, as its critics contend, has historically fostered intolerance toward Muslims who disagree with its doctrines, making peaceful coexistence within the Muslim community and even beyond it far more difficult.
