Among the most profound subjects in the Tijani tradition is the question of Quṭbāniyyah and Khatm al-Wilāyah.
What do these terms actually mean? How did Shaykh Ahmad al-Tijani (RA) come to be associated with them? And what do the classical Tijani sources say?
Before discussing Quṭbāniyyah, we must first understand Wilāyah (Sainthood).
In Islam, a Walī (friend of Allah) is not someone who claims a special status, but one who is distinguished by sincere faith (īmān) and God-consciousness (taqwā).
"Indeed, the friends (awliyā') of Allah—there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve. Those who believed and were mindful of Allah." (Qur'an 10:62–63)
Within the classical Sufi tradition, scholars speak of the Quṭb ("the Pole")—a title used for the foremost saint of an era, around whom the spiritual hierarchy is described.
This is a technical term found in many works of Tasawwuf and should be understood within that scholarly tradition, not as a replacement for the teachings of the Qur'an and Hadith

| 3 | The Friday Hailala practised within the Tijānī tradition is precisely this: believers assembling on the noblest day of the week to engage collectively in the greatest form of dhikr.
Its objective is neither novelty nor spectacle, but obedience to the Qur'ānic injunction to remember Allah abundantly.
For over fourteen centuries, Muslims have gathered for Qur'ānic recitation, supplication, study, and remembrance.
Such gatherings are recognised throughout the Sunni scholarly tradition, provided they remain within the ethical and legal framework of the Sharī'ah.
The value lies not merely in gathering, but in gathering for Allah.
The ultimate aspiration is not simply the movement of tongues, but the awakening of hearts.
As Allah says:
"Indeed, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find tranquillity."
(Qur'ān 13:28)
True dhikr transforms the heart before it transforms the tongue.
May Allah make us among those whom the angels surround, whom mercy embraces, upon whom tranquillity descends, and whom Allah mentions in the Highest Assembly.
May He make Lā ilāha illā Allāh the light of our hearts, the comfort of our souls, and our final words before meeting Him.
Āmīn.

| 4 | 🧵 The Friday Hailala (Lā ilāha illā Allāh) in the Tijānī Tradition: A Qur'ānic and Prophetic Perspective
By: Anatomy of Sufism
____
The Friday Hailala the collective recitation of Lā ilāha illā Allāh is among the most recognised devotional practices of the Tijānī Ṭarīqah.
Far from being an isolated custom, its foundations are rooted in the Qur'ān, the Sunnah, and the broader Islamic tradition of communal remembrance (dhikr).
A brief study follows.
Allah, the Exalted, declares:
يا ايها الذين آمنوا اذا نودي للصلاة من يوم الجمعة فاسعوا الى ذكر الله وذروا البيع ذلكم خير لكم ان كنتم تعلمون
"O you who believe! When the call is proclaimed for the prayer on Friday, hasten to the remembrance (dhikr) of Allah and leave off trade. That is better for you, if only you knew."
(Qur'ān 62:9)
Classical exegetes understood "the remembrance of Allah" in this verse primarily as the Friday sermon and prayer. Yet the verse establishes Friday as a day uniquely devoted to divine remembrance.
Allah further states:
"When the prayer has concluded, disperse through the land and seek the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah abundantly, so that you may prosper."
(Qur'ān 62:10)
Remarkably, the command to engage in abundant remembrance follows immediately after the completion of Jumu'ah, indicating that the believer's relationship with Allah continues beyond the formal prayer.
The Qur'ān repeatedly encourages frequent remembrance:
يا ايها الذين آمنوا اذكروا الله ذكرا كثيرا * وسبحوه بكرة واصيلا
"O you who believe! Remember Allah with much remembrance, and glorify Him morning and evening."
(Qur'ān 33:41–42)
The command is unrestricted in its frequency and comprehensive in its scope, encouraging a life centred upon the remembrance of Allah.
The Sunnah further affirms the immense virtue of gatherings dedicated to dhikr.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"No people gather together remembering Allah except that the angels surround them, mercy envelops them, tranquillity descends upon them, and Allah mentions them among those who are with Him."
(Reported in Sahih Muslim)
This hadith constitutes one of the clearest textual evidences for the excellence of gatherings devoted to the remembrance of Allah.
In another celebrated narration, the Prophet ﷺ informed us:
Allah has angels who travel throughout the earth searching for gatherings of remembrance. When they find such a gathering, they surround it with their wings until they fill the space between the earth and the lowest heaven.
(Reported by Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
The imagery is extraordinary: the people of dhikr are honoured by the company of angels.
The narration concludes with Allah declaring:
"I have forgiven them."
Even one who joined the gathering incidentally is encompassed by Allah's mercy because of the blessed company he kept.
This illustrates the transformative spiritual value of righteous assemblies.
Another authentic narration records that the Prophet ﷺ asked a group of Companions:
"What has caused you to sit together?"
They replied:
"We have gathered to remember Allah and praise Him for guiding us to Islam."
The Prophet ﷺ then informed them that Jibrīl had come to tell him that Allah was praising them before the angels.
(Sahih Muslim)
Few honours exceed being mentioned by Allah in the highest assembly.
Among all forms of remembrance, none surpasses the declaration of Divine Unity.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"The best remembrance is: Lā ilāha illā Allāh."
Reported in Jami' al-Tirmidhi.
It is the foundation of faith, the key to salvation, and the greatest statement ever uttered by human tongues.
The Prophet ﷺ also instructed:
"Renew your faith."
When asked how, he replied:
"Increase your saying of Lā ilāha illā Allāh."
Reported in Musnad Ahmad with supporting narrations.
The continuous repetition of the testimony of Divine Oneness is therefore an act of spiritual renewal. | 207 |
| 5 | By Allah, what happened at ATBU was more than just an incident, it was a revelation. It exposed a reality many have long denied: the average half-baked Salafi finds it difficult to genuinely love or accept a Sufi person.

| 15 | 🧵 “I Visited Karbala and Wept” — Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse (RA) and the Martyrdom of Imam Husayn (RA)
By: Anatomy of Sufism
___
A thread on love, legacy, and a scholar's spiritual journey to the soil of sacrifice. 🩸🕋
Imam Husayn ibn Ali (RA), beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, was martyred at Karbala on the 10th of Muharram (Ashura) in 680 CE — refusing to bow to tyranny.
His stand became the eternal symbol of truth over oppression.
---
2️⃣
Many honor this legacy, but few Sunni scholars expressed such intense love for Husayn (RA) as Shaykh al-Islam Hajj Ibrahim Niasse (RA) — leader of the Tijaniyya, lover of Ahlul Bayt, and one of the greatest Sufi saints of the 20th century.
---
3️⃣
Yes — Shaykh Ibrahim visited Karbala.
And in his Diwan, he recorded his spiritual experience with verses that echo across time:
> لَدَىٰ كَرْبَلَا زُرْتُ الْحُسَيْنَ تَوَسُّلًا
لِوَالِدِهِ الْأَرْضَىٰ، مِنَ اللهِ طَالِبًا
In Karbala, I visited Al-Husayn seeking a means to his father (Ali), the pleased one, and seeking a means to Allah ﷻ...
---
4️⃣
And he continued:
> عَلِيٌّ أَبُو السِّبْطَيْنِ لَيْثُ مُحَمَّدٍ
بِصَارِمِهِ الصَّمْصَامِ أُنْجِي الْمَصَائِبَا
Ali, the father of the two grandsons, the Lion of Muhammad ﷺ. By whose sharp sword I ward off calamities...
📘 From his poem Sayr al-Qalb (Diwan Sīr)
---
5️⃣
This wasn’t symbolic.
Shaykh Ibrahim walked the land of Karbala.
He stood near the shrine of Husayn, greeted his spirit, and wept — not out of ritual, but out of true maḥabba (spiritual love).
---
6️⃣
In another verse, he says:
زُرْتُ كربلا وسلمت على روح الحسين
ودمعي جارٍ كسيْل العرم
“I visited Karbala and greeted the soul of Husayn. My tears flowed like a mighty flood.”
This is not just poetry — this is wilāya (sainthood).
---
7️⃣
For Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse (RA), love of Ahlul Bayt was not political, nor sectarian — it was foundational.
He once said:
“Whoever has no love for Husayn in his heart — he is not of us.”
A powerful message rooted in prophetic love ﷺ.
---
8️⃣
The legacy of Karbala teaches:
✅ Speaking truth to power
✅ Honoring the Prophet's ﷺ family
✅ Sacrificing comfort for conviction
And Shaykh Ibrahim embodied these values in life, travel, and teaching.
---
9️⃣
As Ashura (10th Muharram) approaches — reflect on this:
Even centuries later, the hearts of saints still cry for Imam Husayn.
And through their tears, we are reminded of what Islam truly stands for:
Justice. Truth. Love.
---
🔟
May Allah raise us among those who love the Prophet ﷺ and his noble family.
May He bless the soul of Imam Husayn (RA), and the soul of Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse (RA) — the one who cried in Karbala.
Retweet to revive the love of Ahlul Bayt ❤️

| 17 | Those who met Shaykh Ahmad al-Tijani (RA) did not merely find a student of knowledge, they found a man deeply devoted to worship.
He spent long periods in dhikr, reflection, and devotion, striving to embody the knowledge he had acquired.
For him, the goal of knowledge was transformation, not information.
