Rebecca Cheptegei, a Ugandan marathon runner who competed in the Paris Olympics last month, has died days after she was burned by her boyfriend, the country’s athletics federation confirmed on X, formerly known as Twitter, Thursday. “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence,” the Uganda Athletics Federation posted. “As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest In Peace.” Cheptegei, 33, who lived in Kenya, had been in a critical condition after suffering burns on 75% of her body following Sunday’s attack at her house in the western Trans Nzoia County. Her death was also confirmed on X by the Kenyan Olympic Team. Trans Nzoia County police commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom said earlier this week that the athlete had been doused in petrol by her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, who stormed her house with a jerry can of gasoline and set fire to her after a disagreement over land. Ndiema, who was also burned, is being treated at a hospital in the city of Eldoret. Gender Based Violence (GBV) remains a pressing concern in Ethiopia, as highlighted by an Online Survey conducted by SIHA Network in August 2024 with 84 respondents from diverse backgrounds. The survey, which informed the Network’s advocacy strategy for Ethiopia, revealed that 54.8% of respondents consider GBV the most critical issue for women’s rights advocates. The recent brutal murder of seven-year-old Heaven Awet in Bahir Dar has sparked widespread outrage and demands for justice. Heaven was raped, mutilated, and killed by her mother’s landlord, who was convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison. However, his appeal and subsequent escape have further fueled public anger. Moreover, Heaven’s mother, Sister Abekyelesh Adeba, has received death threats and been forced into hiding, underscoring the need for urgent action to address GBV and ensure accountability The case, denounced as ‘inhumane’ by the Minister of Women and Social Affairs for the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRRE), Ergogie Tesfaye (PhD), highlights the critical need for enhanced protection mechanisms for women and children in Ethiopia The outrage surrounding Heaven’s case also exposes the entrenched, systemic issues of misogyny and gender based discrimination that pervade Ethiopian society. While Heaven’s situation is particularly heinous, it’s crucial to recognize that countless other women and girls endure violence and discrimination routinely. Most cases reveal the inadequacy of reactionary responses, which address GBV only after it occurs, rather than preventing it proactively, thereby enabling its persistence. This necessitates a shift towards proactive, preventative measures that address GBV’s root causes by challenging deeply ingrained harmful social-cultural norms. His contributions spanned human rights, peace, and democracy in Ethiopia and beyond, with his pivotal role in drafting Ethiopia's current multinational constitution in 1995 standing as a testament to his impact. As the UNESCO Chair for Human Rights, Peace, and Democracy at AAU, and as an advisor to Ethiopia’s late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, Andreas played a critical role in shaping Ethiopia's modern history. A leading figure in the Ethiopian Student Movement and an early member of the All Ethiopian Socialist Movement, his lifelong commitment to justice and equality left an indelible mark on the nation, particularly through his vital contributions during and after the Ethiopian revolution of 1974.

#ፍትሕ በሀገራችን በተደጋጋሚ ጊዜ ሴቶች ፣ ትንንሽ ህጻናት ሳይቀሩ ይደፈራሉ ፤ ይገደላሉ የሚሰጠው ፍርድ ግን " እውነት ፍርዱ ለማስተማር ነው ? ፍትሕ ለማስፈን ነው ? " የሚል ጥያቄ የሚያስነሳና እጅግ በጣም አስደንጋጭ ጭምር ነው። ውድ የቲክቫህ ኢትዮጵያ ቤተሰቦቻችን ፥ መቼም ስለ ሚደፈሩ ሴቶች ፤ ደጉን ከክፉ ያለዩ ምንም የማያውቁ ህጻናት ሳይቀሩ ስለሚፈጸምባቸው አሰቃቂ ግፍና ወንጀለኞች ላይ ስለሚተላለፉት ፍርዶች ብዙ ጊዜ መረጃ ስንለዋወጥ መቆየታችን ይታወሳል። ለአብነት በቅርብ ወራት እንኳን ፦ - " የ11 ዓመቷን ልጅ የደፈረው አባት 16 ዓመት ከ6 ወር ጽኑ እስራት ተቀጣ። " - " አንገቷን አንቆና አፏ ውስጥ ጨርቅ ጠቅጥቆ የ14 ዓመቷን ልጅ የደፈረው እና ሕይወቷ እንዲያልፍ ያደረገው ግለሰብ በ19 ዓመት ተቀጣ። " - " የ5 ዓመቷን ህፃን የደፈረው የ17 ዓመት ወጣት በ6 ወር እስር ተቀጣ። " - " የ10 አመቷን ህፃን ልጅ አስገድዶ የደፈረው ግለሰብ በ14 ዓመት ፅኑ እስራት ተቀጣ። " - " የ4 አመቷን ህጻን አስገድዶ የደፈረው ግለሰብ በ17 ዓመት ጽኑ እስራት ተቀጣ። " - " የ8 አመት ህፃናትን አስገድዶ የደፈረው የ41 አመት ጎልማሳ በ10 አመት ፅኑ እስራት ተቀጣ። " - " እጅግ አረመኔያዊ በሆነ ሁኔታ ሁለት የ16 እና የ17 ዓመት ልጆቹን በአልኮል አደንዝዞ አስገድዶ የደፈረው አባት በ21 አመት ተቀጣ። " የሚሉ እነዚህን መረጃዎች በቲክቫህ ገጻችሁ ላይ አንብባችኋል። ይኸው ዛሬ ደግሞ ጆሮን ጭው ፤ ልብን ቀጥ የሚያደርግ የባህር ዳሯን የ7 ዓመት ህጻን ሔቨንን ጉዳይ ሰማን። ህጻን ሔቨን ላይ እጅግ አሰቃቂ የመድፈር እና የግድያ ወንጀል የፈጸመው ግለሰብ 25 ዓመት እንደተፈረደበት ተሰማ። ጭራሽ ይህም እንዳይሆነ የግለሰቡ ቤተሰቦች፣ ጎረቤቶች ፣ አንዳንድ የፖሊስ አባላት ፣ ከፍትህ አካላት ጭምር ጥረት ሲያደርጉ ነበር። በሔቨን ጉዳይ በርካቶች ልባቸው ተሰብሯል ፤ ተቆጥተዋል። የመንግስት አካላትም ስለ ጉዳዩ ፊት ለፊት ወጥተው ተናግረዋል። እናት የፍትሕ እያለች ነው። ለፍትሕ እያነባች ነው። የግለሰቡ ቤተሰቦችም #እህቱን ጨምሮ ስራ የምትሰራበት ቦታ ድረስ ተከታትለዋት መቀመጫ መቆሚያ አሳጥተዋት ስራ እንድትልቀ አድርገዋል። ከፍርዱ በፊትም ብዙ ማስፈራሪያ ሲደረግባት ነበር። ኃላም እንደዛው። ማስፈራሪያ እና ክትትሉ ብዙ ጊዜ ቤት እንድትለቅ አድርጓታል። ዛሬም ለቅሶ ላይ ናት። እናት ዛሬም የፍትሕ ያላህ ትላለች። " የት እንዲህ ? ወይ ሌላ ሀገር የለን ? ለማን እንናገር ? ማንስ ይሰማናል ? የእውነት አምላክ እሱ ይፍረድ ነው " ቃሏ። የሔቨን ጉዳይ የብዙዎች ነው። የእናቷ አንባ የብዙዎች ነው። ስንት እናቶች ናቸው እውነተኛ ፍርድና ፍትሕ አጥተው ቤታቸውን ዘግተው እያለቀሱ ይሆን ? መሰል ጉዳዮች ሰሞነኛ ጉዳይ እየሆኑ እያለፉ ነው። አንድ ሰሞን ይወራል ከዛ ይተዋል። በቃ ሊባልና መፍትሄ ሊፈለግ ይገባል። የወንጀለኞቹ መታሰር የልጆቻችንን  ህይወት እንኳ ባያስመልስም ትክክለኛ ፍርድ ግን ቢያንስ እንባ ያብሳል። ሌላውን ያስተምራል። አሁን እየሆነ ያለው ያ አይደለም። ፍትሕ ይስፈን ! አስተማሪና ሀቀኛ ፍርድ ይፈረድ ! ፍትሕ ! እውነተኛ ፍትሕ ለተነፈጉ በርካታ ሴቶች፣ እናቶች ፣ ሕጻናት ! #TikvahEthiopia⚖ @tikvahethiopia
