🔆 BURIED QUESTIONS: RISKS OF PROJECTS IN THE FRAGILE HIMALAYAS 📍 Why in Focus? ✅ A suspected methane pocket burst at the under-construction Teesta Stage-VI hydropower project in Sikkim damaged a tunnel and killed at least 15 workers. 📍 Key Concerns ✅ The Teesta basin lies in a seismically active, young and highly fractured Himalayan region, where underground gas pockets may pose excavation risks. ✅ The incident raises questions over geological risk assessment, gas detection, ventilation and worker-safety safeguards. ✅ Multiple hydropower projects along the 400-km Teesta stretch are located in the environmentally fragile Himalayan belt. ✅ The 2023 South Lhonak glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF), which destroyed the Teesta-III dam, had already exposed the region’s vulnerability. ✅ Beyond immediate rescue operations, the government should conduct an independent review of compliance with environmental-clearance conditions. 📍 Mains Question Infrastructure development in the fragile Himalayan region requires a balance between developmental needs and ecological and human safety. Discuss. #DisasterManagement #Environment

🔆 Zoopharmacognosy: When Animals Self-Medicate 📍 Why in Focus? Recent studies have highlighted Zoopharmacognosy—the behaviour of animals using plants, soil and natural substances to prevent or treat diseases, offering insights into animal behaviour, evolution and potential medicinal discoveries. 📍 Key Highlights:Zoopharmacognosy (zoo = animal, pharmaco = medicine, gnosy = knowledge) refers to self-medication by animals using natural substances. ✅ Orangutans in Indonesia have been observed applying a paste of Dracaena leaves mixed with saliva to relieve muscle and joint pain, while chimpanzees consume Desmodium gangeticum leaves to eliminate parasites. ✅ Animals such as elephants use oregano for respiratory relief, whereas monkeys, dogs, cats and sheep eat grass to expel intestinal parasites. ✅ Geophagy—the deliberate consumption of soil or clay—is practised by many animals to obtain minerals or relieve digestive problems, while some birds use herbs to protect nests from parasites. 📍 Challenges / Issues / Implications: ✅ Behavioural knowledge can aid wildlife conservation, veterinary science and drug discovery. ✅ Habitat destruction may reduce animals’ access to medicinal plants essential for natural self-medication. ✅ Greater scientific research is needed to validate traditional observations and identify bioactive compounds. ✅ Mains Question: “What is Zoopharmacognosy? Discuss how the self-medicating behaviour of animals contributes to biodiversity conservation, veterinary science and biomedical research.” (250 Words) #Biodiversity #Environment

🔆 Sikkim Tunnel Disaster: Methane Hazard in Fragile Himalayas 📍 Why in Focus? A methane gas explosion inside the NHPC’s 500 MW Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project (HRT) at Samardung, Namchi district, Sikkim, on 20 July claimed the lives of 25 workers, raising concerns over underground construction safety in the fragile Himalayan region. 📍 Key Highlights: ✅ The explosion was triggered when drilling intersected a methane pocket trapped in coal-bearing Himalayan rocks, releasing highly flammable gas. ✅ Methane accumulates in porous rocks, geological faults and coal-bearing strata, where decomposed organic matter generates gas over millions of years. ✅ Himalayan hydropower projects require comprehensive geological, geotechnical, geophysical and hydrological investigations, along with continuous gas detection and safety monitoring. ✅ The Teesta basin lies in the Rangit Tectonic Window and Himalayan seismic zone, making it vulnerable to earthquakes, landslides and underground geological hazards. ✅ The region has witnessed repeated disasters, including the 2023 South Lhonak Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) that damaged the Teesta-III Project, highlighting the cumulative risks of infrastructure development in the Himalayas. 📍 Challenges / Issues / Implications: ✅ Inadequate identification and monitoring of subsurface methane pockets during tunnelling. ✅ Increasing climate change-induced hazards such as glacier retreat, GLOFs and landslides affecting Himalayan infrastructure. ✅ Need to balance hydropower development with geological safety, environmental sustainability and disaster resilience. ✅ Mains Question: “The fragile Himalayan ecosystem poses significant challenges to infrastructure development. Discuss with reference to hydropower projects, geological hazards and climate-induced risks.” (250 Words) #DisasterManagement #Environment
