🔆 MoRTH’s Advanced Landslide Mitigation Measures for Climate-Resilient Hill Roads 📍 Why in Focus? ✅ The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has adopted advanced technologies and scientific slope stabilization measures to mitigate landslide risks and build climate-resilient highway infrastructure, especially in the Himalayan and other hill regions. 📍 Key Highlights: ✅ Advanced Monitoring: Deployment of InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar)-based landslide monitoring and early warning systems on the Char Dham route (Uttarakhand) and proposed monitoring on NH-5 (Himachal Pradesh) for real-time hazard detection. ✅ Technology-Driven Mitigation: Use of satellite monitoring, drones, LiDAR surveys and Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) for site-specific slope assessment and early identification of geohazards. ✅ Scientific Slope Stabilisation: Adoption of soil nailing, rock anchors, retaining walls, drainage systems, terracing, gabion walls, bamboo benching and vetiver grass plantations to improve slope stability. ✅ Institutional Collaboration: Partnerships with GSI, DGRE, NIRM, IIT Roorkee, IIT Delhi and THDC India Ltd. strengthen geotechnical investigations, hazard assessment and infrastructure resilience. ✅ Policy Reforms: Introduction of phased hill construction, Normative Construction Periods for difficult terrains and provision of additional Right of Way for slope stabilization and maintenance. 📍 Challenges / Issues / Implications: ✅ Climate change is increasing the frequency of cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides, threatening mountain infrastructure. ✅ High costs and complex geology make construction and maintenance of Himalayan highways technically challenging. ✅ Continuous monitoring, inter-agency coordination and sustainable financing remain essential for long-term resilience. ✅ Mains Question: “Discuss the challenges posed by landslides to infrastructure development in the Himalayan region.
