Q: What are GE and IE? GE refers to the General Elections, while IE refers to the Internal Elections. During GE, all candidates must submit the required nomination/election form. Candidates whose submissions are complete and valid will be put forward for election. Up to 9 candidates may be elected to the Management Committee. To be elected, a candidate must: • secure at least 35% of the votes cast; and • rank among the top 9 candidates who meet that threshold. Successful candidates will then proceed to Internal Elections (IE), where specific MC roles will be determined. Q: Can we run for a specific role during GE? No. During GE, all candidates are running simply to be elected as members of the Management Committee. Specific portfolios and roles are not determined during GE. These will only be decided during IE. Q: My friend and I are both thinking about running for the same role during IE. What happens? Candidates are encouraged to keep an open mind about the roles they may eventually take on. If you are interested in serving on The Bar, we encourage you to first focus on running for GE. You may certainly enter IE with a preferred role in mind. However, the final allocation of roles will depend on the IE process. For a candidate to be appointed to a role uncontested, they must receive a unanimous vote from the other MC members. If the first round of voting is not unanimous, the candidates contesting that role will be given an opportunity to present to the other MC members on why they would like to take on the portfolio. A second round of voting will then take place, with the candidate who secures a majority vote being appointed to the role. Q: I am interested in running for another club. Can I still run for The Bar MC? Yes, but there are some restrictions. A Bar MC member cannot concurrently hold a President or Vice-President (P/VP) position in another club, whether it is a school club, CCA, sub-club, or other student organisation. However, you may generally still serve as an MC member of another club. A separate restriction applies to the Honorary Finance Secretary (HFS). If you serve as the Bar's HFS, you cannot concurrently be part of the finance function of another club. Q: I am a Year 1 student. Can I run for The Bar MC? Yes! Elections are open to all LLB undergraduates. In recent years, the MC has typically been made up primarily of Year 2 students. Year 1 students may therefore wish to first consider joining The Bar as an Associate, which provides an opportunity to better understand The Bar's work and gain experience working with the MC. Associate interviews are usually held towards the end of the calendar year, with the associateship commencing in the new year. That said, if you are a Year 1 student who is particularly passionate about serving directly on the MC, you are absolutely welcome to submit a nomination form and run in GE.
