Dear all, I wanted to share a brief update following the School’s email this evening. Earlier this afternoon, the Bar’s Academic Team and I met with the faculty for what I felt was a meaningful and constructive discussion. The School began by sharing that, following the townhall and its consideration of the feedback received, it had reached the decision now reflected in the Dean’s email and accompanying FAQ. During the meeting, we raised several of the concerns and suggestions that students have shared with us over the past few days. While the School has made its firm decision on the immediate changes, I am glad to share that it was receptive to the Bar’s proposal to explore the formation of a student–faculty workgroup on AI in legal education, and has expressed its support for us to take this forward. I see this as an important opportunity for us to move beyond the immediate changes and towards a participatory conversation about how AI should shape legal education at SMU. I have already received a considerable amount of thoughtful feedback from many of you, and we will ensure that this is conveyed as we continue our discussions with the School. In the meantime, I would encourage everyone to first read the School’s email and FAQ carefully before sending us any broader questions or feedback for onward transmission. The Bar will continue to act in the collective interests of our students and ensure that your voices are heard. At the same time, I believe respect must remain central in the way we dialogue; firm in substance, but respectful in form. The past few days have shown that students care deeply about the quality and direction of our education here in SMU. My hope is that we can channel that concern into something constructive. Thank you, as always, for trusting us to represent you. We will keep working to ensure that this topic remains a conversation in which students have a meaningful seat at the table. Sincerely, Caleb R. Tupili President, SMU Law Society (The Bar)
