On October 4, 1957, the USSR successfully launched the first satellite. The satellite is currently following an elliptical orbit around Earth, and its flight can be observed in the light of the rising and setting Sun using the simplest optical instruments. Updates on the movement of the first artificial satellite, launched in the USSR on October 4, will be broadcast regularly by radio stations.🛰 An aluminium sphere 58 centimetres (~23 inches) in diameter, weighing 83.6 kilograms (~184 pounds), with four antennas and two radio transmitters – this was humanity’s first envoy in orbit. Behind its simple exterior lay the immense efforts of Soviet scientists, engineers and workers. Sputnik completed an orbit around Earth roughly every 96 minutes, and radio enthusiasts worldwide picked up its famous signals. Its radio transmitters operated for about three weeks, while the satellite itself remained in orbit for 92 days. During that time, it completed 1,440 orbits around Earth, travelling some 60 million kilometres (~ 37.3 million miles). Its flight ended on January 4, 1958, when it entered the dense layers of the atmosphere and burned up. The historic launch validated the calculations and technical solutions needed to reach space. Observations of the satellite gave scientists new data on the density of the upper atmosphere and the propagation of radio waves through the ionosphere. 🌐 Sputnik 1 was a triumph of Soviet science and engineering – an achievement for all humanity. It proved that the path beyond Earth was open – paving the way for Yuri Gagarin’s flight, the exploration of the Moon and other planets, and the construction of orbital stations. For 6️⃣9️⃣ years, satellites have served humanity. Today, they are essential to everyday life: they provide communications and television broadcasting, help us navigate, forecast the weather and monitor climate change. ☝️ But the first was ours. Forever. #Sputnik1
Russia and India pursue an independent and sovereign foreign policy. Together with our BRICS partners and other countries of the Global Majority, we are promoting the emergence of a fairer and more democratic multipolar world order and upholding the fundamental principles of international law enshrined in the #UNCharter. These include the right of every country to pursue its own path of development and preserve its cultural and civilisational identity, respect for sovereignty, and a carefully calibrated balance of interests of all members of the international community.🎉 We extend our warmest congratulations to our Indian colleagues and friends on this shared milestone!
The question of ensuring that Nazi criminals would inevitably be brought to justice was first officially raised in a Soviet diplomatic note in November 1941. The Soviet Union <...> was the principal initiator and driving force behind the establishment of the Nuremberg Tribunal. Our proposals were heard and accepted. Our country's key role in arranging the Nuremberg proceedings is absolutely indisputable. The Nuremberg Trials involved an enormous amount of paper work. A total of 403 public hearings were held. 116 witnesses were examined, and more than 300'000 testimonies were considered. Approximately 3,000 documents were examined. ❗️The Trials' proceedings elucidated, for the first time, the unprecedented scale of Nazi Germany's war crimes, including the brutal treatment of POWs and the deliberate destruction of entire cities, villages and their inhabitants. 💬 Russian MFA Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova:
Although the term 'genocide' does not appear in the text of the Nuremberg Tribunal's Charter or verdict (it became established in international legal practice at a later date), the trial records unequivocally point to numerous acts aimed at the deliberate extermination of the Soviet people, including the years-long siege of Leningrad. <...> Unfortunately, we are compelled to acknowledge that, 80 years on, many have forgotten the lessons of the 'Trials of Nations'. This applies not only to the Kiev regime's leadership, which, since 2014, has outlawed and sought to eradicate everything Russian in Russia's historical territories, rehabilitating, glorifying and drawing inspiration from the example of Hitler's collaborators. The same applies to those who justify, shield and support the terrorist actions of the current neo-fascist regime in Ukraine.(From the briefing by Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, 1 October 2026) ⚖️ On 1 October 1946, a historic verdict was delivered — 19 defendants were found guilty. Göring, Ribbentrop, Keitel, Kaltenbrunner, Rosenberg, Jodl, Bormann (in absentia) and other representatives of the Nazi leadership were sentenced to death by hanging. A number of institutions of Hitler's Germany, including the SS, SD, Gestapo and the Nazi Party leadership corps, were declared criminal organisations. ✍️ From article by Valery Zorkin, Chairman of the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation, "The Sacred Beacon of Nuremberg and the Shadow of The Hague" (October 1, 2026):
Nuremberg was an act of retribution against Evil and a defining moment in establishing the legal foundations of the post-war world. The Tribunal became a hammer brought down upon a criminal state and its legal order.#Nuremberg80
