🪙 Computer Vision for Numismatics: AI for Grading Collectible Coins Researchers from Skoltech and Central University developed an automated coin grading approach that minimizes manual subjectivity and overcomes the limits of traditional computer vision. The study is published in top journals: ACM Journal on Computing and Cultural Heritage, Expert Systems with Applications, and IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement. 🔬 Methodology: Dual deep learning model based on two ResNet50 variants. Domain-specific probability distribution algorithm. Vision-language model simulating simultaneous evaluation of both coin sides. Hierarchical transformer for improved classification accuracy. 💬 Direct Speech:
"We built a dataset and proposed an AI model that recognizes how adjacent grading classes, like uncirculated and minimally circulated coins, share overlapping visual features," — Melaku Getahun, PhD student in the Skoltech "Engineering Systems" program. "Our approach automates coin grading. As pioneers, we hope to build a transparent, reliable system accessible to collectors, investors, and museums," — Andrey Somov, team leader, Associate Professor at the Skoltech Center for Engineering Systems and Sciences, and Professor at Central University.
📊 Results: The team's approach demonstrates significant advantages over previous methods in both qualitative and quantitative grading precision. ACM Journal on Computing and Cultural Heritage, Expert Systems with Applications и IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement.

☀️ On the Tech Kitchen program, Tatiana Podladchikova—director of the Skoltech Center for Engineering Systems and Sciences and head of the Solar Physics & Space Weather Laboratory—explored some mind-bending concepts for Earth’s distant future. She discussed hypothetical ways to save our planet once the Sun expands into a red giant, and even considered hypothetical scenarios for extending the Sun’s lifetime.
“You can imagine truly wild scenarios,” she said, “like trying to nudge Earth into a farther orbit to escape the Sun’s heat, or even ‘refueling’ the star to keep it burning longer. Of course, all of that is way beyond our current technology—and honestly, beyond what we even know is physically possible. But that’s exactly what makes it so fascinating: wondering where science fiction ends and the physics of the far future begins.”
Beyond the concept already mentioned, theoretical astroengineering offers other large-scale hypothetical ways to save our star:
🌌 Star lifting — the hypothetical removal of part of the Sun's mass. Reducing its mass could, in theory, alter the star's future evolution and significantly extend its lifetime. 🔄 Stellar stirring — hypothetical mixing of stellar matter to channel hydrogen from the outer layers into the nuclear reaction zone. This would allow the Sun to use a much larger share of its hydrogen fuel. 🌪️ Tidal spinning — hypothetically altering the orbits of giant planets like Jupiter so their gravitational pull affects the Sun's rotation and internal dynamics. In theory, this could enhance mixing and prolong the star's life. 🛰 Stellar engine (Shkadov thruster) — a giant reflective structure near the Sun that uses radiation pressure to generate a tiny but constant thrust. Such an engine could gradually shift the motion of the Sun and its entire planetary system.
❓What do you think? Which of these wild space ideas seems most realistic for humanity's future?

🔬 Breakthrough in Nanomechanics: Preventing Material Failure An international team of researchers, including Alexander Korsunsky, a professor at Skoltech’s Center for Engineering Systems and Sciences and head of the Laboratory for Hierarchically Structured Materials, has, for the first time ever, measured mechanical stresses in a contact zone with a resolution of less than 80 nanometers. The results were published in the journal Communications Materials (Nature). ⚙️ Core Finding: Multilayer coatings (ceramic ZrN + amorphous ZrCu) dissipate 30% more elastic energy than single-layer ones. Soft layers act as dampers, preventing crack initiation (similar to mollusk nacre). 🛠 Practical Impact: • Cutting tools: 2–3x longer service life • Turbine blades: protection against high-temperature wear • Biomedical implants: reduced risk of in-body failure 💬 Direct Speech:
"We are giving engineers a way to directly determine stresses at the level of individual asperities in real contact. This is a toolkit that classical mechanics pioneers could only dream of," — Alexander Korsunsky, Professor Skoltech Center for Engineering Systems and Sciences, the Head of the Laboratory for Hierarchically Structured Materials.

🌓 Today, August 12, the world is watching a total solar eclipse — one of the rare moments when nature itself creates an almost perfect solar coronagraph. And the timing is remarkable: we are near solar maximum, when the Sun’s corona is especially complex and extends in many directions.
The corona is not simply a beautiful halo around the Sun. It is the outer solar atmosphere where magnetic energy is stored and released, giving rise to some of the most powerful manifestations of solar activity — solar flares and giant magnetic clouds of plasma erupting from the Sun. These events drive space weather, affecting satellites, navigation, communications and other technological systems in space and on Earth. We observe the corona every day with space-based coronagraphs. But a natural total eclipse gives us something extraordinary: the Moon precisely blocks the bright solar disk, revealing the corona from its innermost structures to spectacular rays stretching far into the sky. For a few minutes, we can actually see the vast atmosphere of our star with our own eyes. The image shows the corona predicted for today’s eclipse by Predictive Science — the result of sophisticated data assimilation and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modelling of the Sun’s magnetic atmosphere. It is a spectacular sight, but also a glimpse into the physics shaping our technological future. “Understanding the Sun is not only about our curiosity to explore the world around us. It is also becoming increasingly important for our technological society. The better we understand the physics of our star, the better we can predict space weather and protect the technologies on which modern life depends” — Tatiana Podladchikova, Director of the Center for Engineering Systems and Sciences and Head of the Solar Physics and Space Weather Laboratory.

🛰 From Enthusiasm to System: How University Satellites Drive Technological Leadership At the 14th All-Russian Congress of Yo
🛰 From Enthusiasm to System: How University Satellites Drive Technological Leadership At the 14th All-Russian Congress of Young Scientists, Skoltech hosted the session "Talent for Space." Moderator Tatiana Podladchikova (Director, Center for Engineering Systems and Sciences) set the tone:
"Enthusiasm sparks breakthroughs, but only a system turns a breakthrough into sustainable growth. Leadership starts not at a spaceport, but in a university lab."
Key insights:
University as assembly point (Yulia Gorbunova, Skoltech President): Winning the selection integrated the satellite into the university model — education, science, and industry now collaborate on a tangible product. From elective to standard (Alexander Vedekhin, Ministry of Education): Satellite development is shifting from an exotic pursuit to the norm in modern engineering education. Industry value (Irina Ganieva, Roscosmos): Graduates with satellite-building experience gain systems thinking and accountability — equivalent to 2–3 years of on-the-job experience. Hands-on over textbooks (Pavel Kolesnikov, Advanced Microsatellites Lab): Satellites teach real-world failures, the cost of mistakes, and responsibility for a live system. Skoltech students are currently building a device to test electronic memory in space — solving problems with no ready-made answers.
Moderator's takeaway:
"Small satellites burn up in the atmosphere, but knowledge, character, and teamwork do not. A satellite isn’t just a device in orbit — it’s a launchpad for a big idea."
Skoltech's Center for Engineering Systems and Sciences continues to turn university projects into real orbital missions.

Dear graduates of the "Engineering Systems" program,
Congratulations on completing your journey at Skoltech. Today is not an ending. It is the moment of separation from the launch tower. A rocket is not built for the launch itself. It is built to go beyond the limits of what is familiar. And so are you. During your studies, you moved from science to real engineering challenges - through calculations, mistakes, prototypes, deadlines, and teamwork. You learned not only how to design systems. You learned how to change reality. Now, your orbit lies ahead. Some of you will continue in science, some will go into industry, and some will build startups. But wherever you go, remember this: an engineer, a scientist, an innovator is someone who takes responsibility for the future. Do not wait for perfect conditions. Do not wait for permission. Do not wait for someone else’s mission. Create your own. Launch projects. Build teams. Challenge the impossible. Create systems that work not on slides, but in the real world. You know how to see the whole picture - how to bring together mechanics, intelligence, data, risk, will, and intuition into a working system. These are exactly the people our time needs. The launch has already happened. Now your task is not simply to reach orbit. Your task is to change the gravity around you. Step onto your own trajectory - and lead others forward.
Tatiana Podladchikova, Director of the Center for Engineering Systems and Sciences at Skoltech and the "Engineering Systems" program ────── 🌐 ──────
