🗓 Monday or Friday? It makes no difference to a grad student! Waiting for the weekend to finally take a break from assignmen
🗓 Monday or Friday? It makes no difference to a grad student! Waiting for the weekend to finally take a break from assignments? Not in PhD! 😉⚡️ Igor Zorin, a graduate student in the “Engineering Systems” program at Skoltech’s Center for Engineering Systems and Sciences, noted a phenomenon familiar to many researchers: sometimes Friday evening is hardly any different from Monday morning. When your schedule is filled with article deadlines, finite element modeling, and experiments, the concept of a “weekend” really does become rather arbitrary. A good example is a new paper by Igor and his colleagues from the Laboratory of Hierarchically Structured Materials, published in the journal Measurement. In the paper, the researchers compared approaches to estimating residual stresses and tested how robust the results of the contour method are to noise in the experimental data. So a Friday evening in the lab may very well look like a regular workday: modeling, experiments, calculations—and preparing the next set of results. We understand, we agree, and we keep calculating!

🌌 Nobel Prize in Physics 2026: A New Window into the Universe Opens How do you turn a cubic kilometer of Antarctic ice into a giant telescope and catch elusive cosmic "ghosts"? Today, the entire scientific world is celebrating this breakthrough! 😉⚡️ The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics to Francis Halzen for his decisive contributions to the IceCube neutrino observatory and the discovery of high-energy cosmic neutrinos. These mysterious particles barely interact with matter and can fly right through planets, giving humanity a unique tool to explore the most extreme parts of the cosmos. Astrophysicist and Director of the Skoltech Center for Engineering Systems and Sciences, Tatiana Podladchikova, shared her insights on the significance of this milestone: 💬 “To me, this prize is not just about neutrinos. It is about how humanity is learning to see the invisible. Neutrinos can be thought of as cosmic 'ghosts': they bring us data from the surroundings of black holes, where particles of colossal energies are born. The concept behind IceCube is staggering: scientists turned a cubic kilometer of Antarctic ice into a detector. When a neutrino interacts with the ice, it generates a tiny flash of light, allowing researchers to determine its energy and origin. For centuries, astronomy studied the Universe through light. IceCube proved that the cosmos has other ways of telling its story, opening a fundamentally new window into the Universe. That is the hallmark of great science—it expands the boundaries of what can be known.”

🔋 Real-Time Monitoring of Battery Cathode Embrittlement Is it possible to capture hidden battery aging mechanisms with a dia
🔋 Real-Time Monitoring of Battery Cathode Embrittlement Is it possible to capture hidden battery aging mechanisms with a diamond probe right during active chemical reactions? Absolutely! 😉⚡ A team of researchers from the Laboratory of Hierarchically Structured Materials at the Skoltech Engineering Center, alongside colleagues from the Center for Energy Technologies, MSU, and the IDEA Research Center, developed a unique operando method to track mechanical degradation in working Li-ion batteries. Supported by an RSF grant, their findings were published in the journal Measurement. What is the essence of the discovery? By designing a custom coin cell with an access window and using a flat diamond nanoindenter tip, the interdisciplinary scientific team successfully monitored the mechanical response of an NMC811 cathode during active cycling. They discovered that above 4.2V, plastic deformation work drops by 28%, causing the material to lose its elasticity and become brittle, which highly increases cracking risks. These parameters are vital for engineering robust, long-lasting high-energy-density batteries for EVs and electronics. 👉 Read the full story on the website.

😊 Program a robotic system so it doesn't just grab objects, but actually understands their shape and applies the perfect amount of force? Absolutely! 😉⚡️ As part of the Quick Success course at the Innovation Workshop, Miguel Altamirano Cabrera, a Research Scientist at the Intelligent Space Robotics Laboratory of our Skoltech Center for Engineering Systems and Sciences, along with mentors Yara Mahmoud and Iaroslav Kolomiets, challenged students with a high-tech task. What was the challenge? The teams had to give a robotic gripper both "sight" and "touch," combining multiple advanced technologies into a single integrated system: Computer Vision: enabling the robot to recognize objects in front of it. Tactile Sensing: grasping objects with the exact right force without causing any damage. Teleoperation: controlling the robot's movements remotely using simple hand missing a space. In just a few hours, the students broke through the tech barrier and built fully functional prototypes. Real-world engineering in action! Done!
