📕 Solar Physics and Quantum Hide-and-Seek: Skoltech Center for Engineering Systems and Sciences Researchers Write Fairy Tales for Kids
Can it get hotter the further you move away from a campfire? Moreover, how can a gamer at a tournament split into multiple selves just to play hide-and-seek with himself?
This fall, the illustrated book "Fairy Tales from Scientists" will be released a joint project by Nauka Publishing House and Skoltech. In it, researchers explain complex laws of the Universe through magical stories.
Two authors represent the Skoltech Center for Engineering Systems and Sciences in the book:
"The Solar Adventures of Lumi and Orla" by the Center's Director, Head of Solar Physics & Space Weather Laboratory Tatiana Podladchova. Together with seven-year-old cosmic hitchhikers Lumi and Orla, readers will hitch a ride on Nika, a talking comet. The heroes set off to check who left the dark spots on the Sun — a cosmic mouse or their ancestors? "Quantum Hide-and-Seek" by Henny Ouerdane, Head of the Energy Conversion Physics and Technology Group. The story grew out of a childhood experiment with a match that went out under a glass. In the fairy tale, a young esports player named SuperMax enters a secret quantum level of a game. There, he discovers the wonder of superposition the ability to exist in multiple places at once and befriend his own quantum copies. The collection is being published with the support of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation as part of the Decade of Science and Technology. We are proud of our colleagues and can’t wait for the book to come out!
| 2 | 💬 "I am testing an array of ultrasonic transducers. They are used in various measuring devices, in industrial sensors and for medical ultrasound. Right now, I am conducting acoustic and laser-vibrometry tests. A single transducer has already been tested. So, now their combined performance in an array of 15 elements is evaluated. Different phase shifts among cells are set, and different design of these cells (in terms of internal structure) is currently being tested".

| 3 | Fairy tale as a draft of the future: Tatiana Podladchikova at the Moscow Book Fair! 🌌✨
On September 5th, Tatiana Podladchikova, Director of the Skoltech Center for Engineering Systems and Sciences, moderated a key session titled "Fairy Tale Cultural Code and Science Popularization" at the 39th Moscow International Book Fair.
The main highlight of the discussion was the launch of "Fairy Tales from Scientists" — a major joint project by Skoltech and the Nauka Publishing House, supported by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation. The upcoming illustrated book features eight active researchers, including Tatiana herself with a story about the Sun, who explained real-world technologies through tales.
The discussion turned into a profound conversation about how the flying carpet evolved into an airplane and how "living water" became modern regenerative medicine. The panel also explored the character of Ivan the Fool, noting that this iconic figure actually embodies the breakthrough mindset of a scientist who acts counterintuitively to common sense, which is exactly how major discoveries are made.
💬 “A fairy tale is no rival to science. It is the first draft of the future. It takes ten minutes to read, lives in the imagination for a lifetime, and remains in our cultural code for centuries, until one day science no longer calls it a fairy tale,” summarized Tatiana Podladchikova.
The pro-science educational campaign will span 11 regions across Russia. The book will hit the shelves this fall, so stay tuned for updates! 📕 🚀
P.S. By the way, both Tatiana Podladchikova and Associate Professor Henni Ouerdane wrote their own tales for this collection. We will soon reveal what space and physics secrets they hid inside. Stay tuned! 😉

| 4 | Flight lessons from a professor: Flight simulator as a Systems Engineering tool 🛩✈️
Did you know that Professor Clement Fortin is an experienced former pilot himself? He mentored the Quick Success challenge at the Innovation Workshop, where Skoltech first-year MSc students successfully mastered controls and landed Cessna 152 and Airbus A320neo aircraft.
Under the guidance of a real aviation expert from the Systems Design Group of the Skoltech Center for Engineering Systems and Sciences, the teams explored the architecture of flight control systems for both aircraft. Following the Learning by doing approach, students discovered how professional flight simulators serve as a powerful systems engineering tool for modeling, testing, and analyzing complex aerospace platforms.
In just a single lab session, the teams broke the psychological barrier toward an unfamiliar field and, under the supervision of a true pilot, gained a practical understanding of how real aircraft behave in the air!
The course coordinators are Saina Sadeghzadeh and Amir Habel, PhD students in the “Engineering Systems” program.

| 5 | 🦇 Radar Navigation for Biomorphic Robots: Robots That Won’t Go Blind
Dzmitry Tsetserukou, associate professor at (Skoltech Center for Engineering Systems and Sciences and head of the Intelligent Space Robotics Laboratory, presented a radar navigation technology for biomorphic robots during a presentation at the Moscow Innovation Cluster’s Robot Testing Center.
💬 Direct quote:
“Radar navigation for biomorphic robots is a technology that gives robots modeled after living organisms (such as robot dogs or bird-like drones) the ability to ‘see’ through fog, smoke, and darkness using radio waves. Instead of eyes or lasers, they use 77 GHz millimeter-wave radar (similar to bat echolocation) and neural networks to map their surroundings and determine the robot’s position. “This allows them to instantly determine the speed of objects and build 3D maps of the terrain even in places where conventional cameras fail and there is no GPS signal at all,” said Dmitry Teteryukov, associate professor at Skoltech’s Center for Engineering Systems and Sciences.
🔜 Spoiler: We’ll soon share more details about our work on this topic. Stay tuned for updates!

| 6 | Shakespearean Engineering: How to reliably deliver a letter to Juliet? 🛩❤️
As part of the Quick Success bootcamp at the Innovation Workshop, first-year Skoltech students competed in an extraordinary technical challenge called "Rubber Flight". The event was organized by the Engineering Intelligence Laboratory of the Skoltech Center for Engineering Systems and Sciences.
The challenge is built around a romantic yet complex engineering problem. Imagine an inventor who wants to send a message to his Juliet, locked in her room. In Shakespeare's time, delivering a letter took days, but modern engineers build a rubber-powered aircraft capable of precisely and reliably reaching her window in just a single lab session.
For the students, it turned into pure technical sports under the Learning by doing motto. Innovative thinking clashed with the physical limitations of materials. The teams had to calculate aerodynamics on the fly, test lift force, and assemble a real hardware prototype in a completely unfamiliar field.
The outcome proved that breaking the psychological barrier toward technology and launching a functional innovation from scratch in no time is absolutely possible!

| 7 | Space with the lights off: the first on-campus class of our executive program! ☀️🛰
September 3rd marked the second session (and the first in-person meeting) of the professional development program "Engineering of Small Spacecraft and Onboard Data Storage Systems". The program is implemented under the "Space Cadres" grant from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation within the framework of the "Space" national project.
The on-campus format kicked off with an immersive vibe. The lecture "Solar Physics and Space Weather" was held with the lights turned off, allowing students to imagine themselves in deep space and view high-resolution satellite imagery of the Sun. The class discussed how solar storms disable Starlink satellites, throw "smart" agricultural machinery off course, and leave geostationary spacecraft unprotected.
The lights went back on for the practical part: an intensive introduction to statistical analysis, focusing on the least squares method (LSM) and linear regression. As their main challenge, students performed a true "reconstruction of the past" by estimating the F10.7 solar radio flux using historical sunspot data.
💬 “From September to November 2026, the students will follow every single engineering step of building a space mission — from understanding the space environment and spacecraft dynamics to designing, testing, and integrating its onboard systems into a unified whole,” noted Center Director Tatiana Podladchikova.
The first big step toward engineering real space systems is complete. Welcome aboard! 🌌

| 8 | How to teach a robot to understand humans? 🦾😉
As part of the Quick Success bootcamp at the Innovation Workshop, first-year Skoltech students from various programs took part in training Physical AI.
Iana Zhura, a PhD student at Intelligent Space Robotics Laboratory and the project's mentor, explained the challenge:
💬 “Students mastered teleoperation — remote control of a real robotic manipulator both in simulation and reality. This is how data is collected to train vision-language models (VLM) so that robots can autonomously sort objects, perform household chores, and be deployed in environments that are hazardous to humans—such as outer space. “It's impossible to train a massive model in 5 hours, but we wanted to give students a firsthand sense of the logic behind the process and convey the key point: 99% of an autonomous model's success depends on humans collecting high-quality teleoperation data.”
In just 5 hours, the teams learned the core logic of dataset generation for the robots of the future. True "learning by doing" in action! 👍

| 11 | How Far Away Does Space Begin? Knowledge Day at the Skolkovo International Gymnasium 🎓🌌
September 1 isn’t just the start of the school year—it’s a great opportunity to talk about major discoveries with those who are just beginning their journey into the world of knowledge.
Skolkovo Gymnasium hosted an inspiring meeting between students and Tatyana Podladchikova, director of our Center for Engineering Systems and Sciences at Skoltech, an astrophysicist, and recipient of the Alexander Chizhevsky International Medal.
The topic of the lecture was truly captivating—“The Sun in Storm Mode” ☀️
Solar flares and sunspots, the northern lights over Moscow, sudden GPS navigation glitches, and satellites losing altitude: how is all of this connected to a star that’s 150 million kilometers away from us?
The students looked at the Sun through the eyes of space telescopes, traced the path of a solar storm to Earth, and tried to answer the main question: How close is space to us if a routine event on the Sun can instantly disrupt technology on our planet?
Sparking an interest in space among schoolchildren is the Center’s most important mission. Thank you to the high school for the warm welcome and the great questions from our future engineers! 🚀

| 12 | “What Is Your Point B?”: Onboarding Meetings for New Students
At the end of August and beginning of September, Skoltech’s Center for Engineering Systems and Sciences hosted its traditional welcome meetings for the new cohort of master’s and PhD students.
During a session with master’s students, Center Director Tatiana Podladchikova encouraged the students not just to get to know one another, but to immediately answer the key question for themselves: What is their personal “Point B” on this journey, and who do they want to become by the end of it? Meanwhile, Associate Professor Henni Ouerdane met with the newly admitted doctoral students, discussing in detail and through lively dialogue the key requirements and characteristics of the Center’s doctoral program.
Our core educational principle is “Learning by doing.” Undergraduate and graduate students will gain in-depth interdisciplinary knowledge across three key tracks:

| 19 | ☀️ On the Tech Kitchen program, Tatiana Podladchikova—director of the Skoltech Center for Engineering Systems and Sciences and head of the Solar Physics & Space Weather Laboratory—explored some mind-bending concepts for Earth’s distant future. She discussed hypothetical ways to save our planet once the Sun expands into a red giant, and even considered hypothetical scenarios for extending the Sun’s lifetime.
“You can imagine truly wild scenarios,” she said, “like trying to nudge Earth into a farther orbit to escape the Sun’s heat, or even ‘refueling’ the star to keep it burning longer. Of course, all of that is way beyond our current technology—and honestly, beyond what we even know is physically possible. But that’s exactly what makes it so fascinating: wondering where science fiction ends and the physics of the far future begins.”
Beyond the concept already mentioned, theoretical astroengineering offers other large-scale hypothetical ways to save our star:
🌌 Star lifting — the hypothetical removal of part of the Sun's mass. Reducing its mass could, in theory, alter the star's future evolution and significantly extend its lifetime.
🔄 Stellar stirring — hypothetical mixing of stellar matter to channel hydrogen from the outer layers into the nuclear reaction zone. This would allow the Sun to use a much larger share of its hydrogen fuel.
🌪️ Tidal spinning — hypothetically altering the orbits of giant planets like Jupiter so their gravitational pull affects the Sun's rotation and internal dynamics. In theory, this could enhance mixing and prolong the star's life.
🛰 Stellar engine (Shkadov thruster) — a giant reflective structure near the Sun that uses radiation pressure to generate a tiny but constant thrust. Such an engine could gradually shift the motion of the Sun and its entire planetary system.
❓What do you think? Which of these wild space ideas seems most realistic for humanity's future?

| 20 | 🔬 Breakthrough in Nanomechanics: Preventing Material Failure
An international team of researchers, including Alexander Korsunsky, a professor at Skoltech’s Center for Engineering Systems and Sciences and head of the Laboratory for Hierarchically Structured Materials, has, for the first time ever, measured mechanical stresses in a contact zone with a resolution of less than 80 nanometers. The results were published in the journal Communications Materials (Nature).
⚙️ Core Finding:
Multilayer coatings (ceramic ZrN + amorphous ZrCu) dissipate 30% more elastic energy than single-layer ones. Soft layers act as dampers, preventing crack initiation (similar to mollusk nacre).
🛠 Practical Impact:
• Cutting tools: 2–3x longer service life
• Turbine blades: protection against high-temperature wear
• Biomedical implants: reduced risk of in-body failure
💬 Direct Speech:
"We are giving engineers a way to directly determine stresses at the level of individual asperities in real contact. This is a toolkit that classical mechanics pioneers could only dream of," — Alexander Korsunsky, Professor Skoltech Center for Engineering Systems and Sciences, the Head of the Laboratory for Hierarchically Structured Materials.

Communications Materials (Nature).
