Shadows have played an unexpected role in the development of human knowledge. Long before mechanical devices could measure time accurately, people observed how the position and length of a shadow changed during the day. By placing a straight object in the ground and marking the movement of its shadow, they could establish regular patterns and divide the day into intervals. Such observations also helped early scholars estimate the height of buildings or trees without climbing them.
