Spirit and Memory: An Artist Maps Addis Ababa's Changing Soul #Ethiopia: Growing up in a neighborhood that was home to some of Ethiopia’s best-known painters — including Laureate Afewerk Tekle, Daniel Taye and Werku Mamo — Yohannes Tamiru was introduced to art at an early age. Frequent visits to their homes allowed him to observe their creative process firsthand, experiences he says inspired him to pursue painting as a profession. Architect Dawit Benti presented his research on Addis Abeba’s architectural amd urban history under the title 'Architectural Echoes: Regionalist Modernism in 1960s Addis Abeba' on 18 June 2026 at AAU Main Campus, Inistitute of Ethiopian Studies, Ras Mekonnen Hall. The event was organised by the Society of Friends of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies Same day, the organizers announced that there will be a followup screening of the movie 'The Modernist' by the filmmaker Rasselas Lakew in July at the same venue. “my client” (referring to God) “is not in a hurry” - Antoni Gaudi Antoni Gaudí (1853-1926) died 100 years ago today at age 73, after spending >40 years on his 'magnum opus' La Sagrada Familia & completing only 1/4 of it. He designed using hanging weights & gravity #models, then inverted them to determine #arches & #columns. Inspired by #nature, he lived austerely, focused solely on the #basilica. He died 3 days after being struck by a tram while walking around #Barcelona. During the incident his clothes were so tattered (his underwear held together with safety pins) that passersby mistook him for a homeless man hence delayed aid for almost an hr. Though much remained unfinished, his plans endured. Today, the basilica stands 172.5 m tall, below #MontjuïcHill, honoring his belief that human creations shouldn't surpass God’s work.
