35th Anniversary Logo Design Competition-Call for Entries AEA is turning 35-and we're inviting the next generation of Ethiopian architects to help us mark it. Current architecture students and 2026 graduates are invited to design our official 35th Anniversary logo-a mark that honors our history while speaking to where the profession is headed. ‣ Open to: current architecture students & 2026 graduates (individuals or teams) Theme: "AEA 35 Years" Prize: official AEA certificate, public recognition, and the winning design becomes AEA's official anniversary logo. Read the names, and Merkato begins to unfold. Minalesh Tera, Military Tera, Dubai Tera. Wenber Tera. Names passed from one person to another, attached to streets, trades, corners and meeting points. Some are remembered for what was sold there; others for the people who gathered around them. Together, they form a vocabulary of movement through the market. The colors change. The languages change. The goods change. The crowd never quite moves the same way twice. Yet all of it belongs to the same immense fabric. Merkato is a place that reveals itself one Tera at a time. Huge thanks to Henok Sisay, a mercato local who helped immensely in mapping out the places.

Five more Ethiopian cities, one growing collection. There’s Hawassa, where life revolves around the lake, Jinka down in the landscapes of South Omo, and Debre Tabor up in the cool highlands. Then there’s Ziway, known for its fish, islands and birdlife, and Ambo, where the famous springs and mineral water have become part of the city’s identity.

Ethiopia Hotel, one of the country's oldest hospitality establishments and a landmark on Yohannes St., has begun to come down. Demolition is already underway at the conference hall at the rear. Crews are working in the parking area behind corrugated iron sheets, and the main building is slated to follow within days. Its remaining life is not expected to stretch beyond October this year.
