| 20 |  Across Britain, a great many cobbled roads still exist beneath the tarmac/asphalt. Rather than digging up expensive and heavy stone foundations, local authorities in the 20th century often poured asphalt directly over the top. As you can see, it hasn't ruined the cobbled paths, but it's instead protected them. I see this from London to Manchester as my eye has trained itself to notice these things over the years.
This example, which also sits beside an old "coal hole" (which was widely used during the Georgian and Victorian eras to allow fuel deliveries directly into basement cellars without entering the main house) is on Derbyshire Street, directly outside the Kings Arms Pub in Bethnal Green.
I can almost hear the horses, footfall, and voices that still haunt the area.
In many places, the old cobbles were left exposed while the main body of the road was covered. I'll get an example or two and do a follow-up post in time. Keep your eye out and maybe even share this post to help others do the same. | 850 |
