A 30-year-old Arizona man was arrested after allegedly making social media posts threatening to kill Maricopa County Sheriff Jerry Sheridan. Authorities said the suspect also posted threats against President Donald Trump and requested "full presidential immunity" from the president. The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office arrested him the same day on charges including use of an electronic device to threaten and stated it will not tolerate threats or violence against elected officials.

Federal investigators intercepted a package containing approximately 997 grams of fentanyl, arrested him after he picked it up, and said the drugs were intended for distribution throughout the Detroit area. The investigation was led by the Homeland Security Task Force as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle fentanyl trafficking networks operating through Arizona.

| 4 | A New York Supreme Court upheld a state monitor's decision to block an estimated $80 million property tax break for a proposed Amazon distribution center in Orange County, ruling that the Orange County Industrial Development Agency failed to adequately respond to the monitor's questions before approving the incentive package. The agency argued the veto was issued after the allowed deadline and said the 3.2 million-square-foot project would generate $70 million in tax revenue and create 750 permanent jobs. The project also continues to face separate legal challenges over its proposed 104-foot height, which exceeds the area's 65-foot building limit.

| 5 | Federal appeals courts have upheld state and local restrictions on natural gas appliances in multiple cases. The Second Circuit upheld New York's law banning natural gas hookups in many new buildings, rejecting industry arguments that federal law preempts the state's authority. Meanwhile, the Ninth Circuit upheld a Southern California regulation banning the manufacture, sale, and installation of certain gas-powered water heaters, boilers, and process heaters in four Los Angeles-area counties, ruling states may regulate appliance emissions under the Clean Air Act, although a dissent argued the decision conflicts with a previous ruling that struck down Berkeley's natural gas ban. Industry groups warn these policies will increase costs, strain the electrical grid, and reduce consumer choice, while supporters argue they are necessary to reduce air pollution. The rulings also come after years of claims by political leaders, including Sen. Chuck Schumer, that concerns about gas stove bans were unfounded, even as states continue advancing restrictions on natural gas appliances.

The Tibetan National Congress identified him as Lobsang Palden (Lobga Rangzen) and said he livestreamed a message calling for Tibetan independence and protesting China's rule over Tibet before the act. He urged others not to mourn him but to continue the movement for Tibetan independence. The organization said he had long participated in peaceful demonstrations highlighting alleged Chinese human rights abuses in Tibet, where more than 150 self-immolations have been reported since 2009 in protest of Chinese rule. Police are continuing to investigate the incident.

| 7 | The CDC reported that the U.S. age-adjusted death rate fell to a record low of 689.2 deaths per 100,000 people in 2025, a 4.6% decline from 2024, even as total deaths rose slightly to 3.09 million due to population growth and aging. Death rates declined across nearly all age groups and demographic categories, with reductions partly driven by fewer fatal drug overdoses. Heart disease and cancer remained the leading causes of death, while influenza and pneumonia moved into the top 10 after a severe flu season caused a 17% increase in deaths. The 2025 figures are preliminary and may be revised when final data become available.

| 8 | A California man pleaded guilty to federal harassment charges after sending fake ransom messages claiming he had kidnapped Nancy Guthrie, the missing 84-year-old mother of Today co-host Savannah Guthrie. Prosecutors are recommending five years of probation. Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her Tucson-area home on February 1, and investigators continue to believe she was abducted after finding blood near her front door and surveillance footage of a masked individual outside her home. The FBI says it is still evaluating ransom notes received during the investigation, although many have been determined to be fraudulent extortion attempts. The disappearance remains unsolved, and authorities continue to seek information about her whereabouts.

| 9 | The Bible is foundational to understanding Western civilization, its literature, history, philosophy, law, political thought, and the principles behind America's founding. Knowledge of the Bible is essential for understanding major historical figures, classic works of literature, the rise of science, capitalism, the Reformation, the abolition movement, the civil rights movement, and the Declaration of Independence because these developments emerged from a culture deeply shaped by Christianity. Excluding the Bible from public school curricula leaves students unable to fully understand the civilization in which they live.
Including the Bible in public school reading lists as a work of literature and history is an academic necessity rather than religious instruction. Appeals to concepts such as equality, tolerance, and human rights are rooted in the same Christian worldview critics seek to remove, while opposition to teaching the Bible reflects a rejection of the intellectual and cultural foundations of the West. A complete education requires familiarity with the Bible because it serves as the framework through which much of Western civilization and its enduring ideas can be understood.

| 10 | A California Senate committee blocked legislation that would have prohibited all registered sex offenders from running for public office after it had passed the Assembly unanimously. Instead, the committee advanced a separate bill that bars only offenders convicted of certain sex crimes against adults while specifically excluding several offenses involving child victims. The debate began after a registered sex offender announced a campaign for Fresno City Council, prompting legislation to close the eligibility gap. Supporters of the broader ban argue registered sex offenders, including those convicted of crimes against children, should not be eligible to hold public office, while opponents contend restricting candidacy raises constitutional concerns.

| 11 | America's education system is producing declining academic achievement while lowering standards in the name of accommodation and compassion. Graduation, college credit, and academic success are becoming easier to obtain through reduced expectations, fewer exams, less reading, relaxed grading, expanded accommodations, and easier dual-enrollment courses, leaving many students unprepared for citizenship, critical thinking, and lifelong learning. Schools increasingly prioritize comfort, entertainment, and social services over intellectual development, while literacy, numeracy, academic integrity, and student accountability continue to decline.
The promise of the Declaration of Independence depends on an educated, self-governing people capable of pursuing happiness through knowledge, reason, and moral character. Education should broaden minds, deepen appreciation for history, literature, philosophy, and the arts, and prepare young Americans to exercise freedom responsibly. Restoring high expectations, academic rigor, and personal responsibility is essential to preserving the nation's founding ideals, because the greatest threat to America's future is accepting educational mediocrity instead of demanding excellence.

| 12 | The Treasury Department announced that Trump Accounts will initially invest contributions in a low-cost S&P 500 index fund, with additional low-cost stock market index fund options to be added in the coming months. The tax-advantaged accounts include a $1,000 federal seed deposit for eligible newborns, allow families to contribute up to $5,000 annually, and are intended to help children build long-term savings through investments in the U.S. stock market. The program is open to U.S. citizen children, expands to include foster children, and is supported by both government funding and private-sector contributions.

| 13 | More than 680,000 bags of Zapp's and Dirty brand potato chips have been recalled nationwide because a seasoning ingredient may be contaminated with Salmonella. Although testing of the seasoning batches was negative and no illnesses had been reported when the recall was announced, the FDA has now classified it as a Class I recall, its highest risk level, meaning there is a reasonable probability that consuming the products could cause serious illness or death. Consumers are advised not to eat the affected chips, discard them, and contact Utz Customer Care for refund information.

| 14 | Rep. Mark Harris is introducing the PARITY Act to repeal the federal 90/10 rule, which applies only to for-profit career and technical schools by requiring at least 10% of their revenue to come from nonfederal sources while exempting traditional public and nonprofit colleges and universities. Supporters say the rule unfairly disadvantages trade schools, limits educational choice, and reduces veterans' access to vocational training. They argue the recently enacted federal accountability standards already evaluate schools based on student outcomes and return on investment, making the 90/10 rule unnecessary. The legislation would eliminate the funding distinction and instead hold institutions accountable based on graduates' success rather than their source of revenue.

Many say media portrayals of America do not match what they have experienced firsthand, and their enthusiasm has sparked renewed appreciation among many Americans as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary. At the same time, Gallup polling shows national pride has declined from 87% in 2001 to 58% in 2025, while favorable views of the United States have also fallen in some countries. Patriotic displays at World Cup matches and celebrations have featured American flags, patriotic costumes, and fans celebrating Team USA, with both Americans and international visitors embracing the country's culture and traditions.

| 16 | A Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General report found multiple Secret Service failures during the July 13, 2024, assassination attempt against President Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. The report states that the agency failed to detect Thomas Crooks' nearly nine-minute surveillance drone flight because its only counter-drone operator was inexperienced, had received minimal training, and was troubleshooting malfunctioning equipment caused by a faulty Ethernet cable. At the same time, local law enforcement was searching for a suspicious individual on the roof, while the counter-drone operator was reportedly searching online to locate the building. The report also identified major breakdowns in communication and coordination with local law enforcement, failure to secure the AGR complex, failure to block the shooter's line of sight, and insufficient personnel assigned to identify long-range threats. The Secret Service accepted all seven recommendations in the report and has begun implementing corrective actions.

| 17 | A Louisiana grand jury indicted Attorney General Liz Murrill on 16 felony counts, including malfeasance in office and public intimidation, over letters she sent warning New Orleans officials that attempts to circumvent a new state law consolidating the parish court clerk system could violate Louisiana law and carry legal consequences. Murrill called the indictment politically motivated, unconstitutional, and retaliatory, announced she would seek emergency relief from the Louisiana Supreme Court, and vowed to continue enforcing state law. Governor Jeff Landry also condemned the indictment, calling it a politically driven prosecution and pledging to pardon Murrill if necessary.

| 18 | January 6 activist Ivan Raiklin submitted a criminal referral asking the Department of Justice to investigate former Capitol Police officer Michael Fanone on multiple alleged offenses, including making false statements to Congress, obstruction of official proceedings, assaulting officers, and unlawful activities on Capitol grounds. Raiklin also filed a $10 million defamation lawsuit against Fanone, alleging Fanone made false statements about him during a House Judiciary Committee hearing and engaged in conduct that warrants further criminal investigation. Several members of Congress criticized Fanone's conduct at the hearing, while Rep. Seth Moulton opposed compensation for January 6 defendants. Fanone has not publicly responded to the allegations.

| 19 | George Soros and members of his family have reportedly become the largest private landowners on Shelter Island, New York, acquiring nearly 120 acres through multiple property purchases. Residents have expressed concerns that the family's growing land holdings could change the character of the community, drive up property values, and price out longtime residents. Reports also note that a 63.6-acre horse farm was purchased and surrounded by a deer fence without prior zoning approval. Separately, the island's only pharmacy reportedly stopped filling prescriptions after being purchased by a different real estate developer, adding to residents' frustrations. The purchases have also renewed criticism that prominent advocates of climate change continue to invest in valuable waterfront properties.

| 20 | The FBI reportedly used Democrat insider Alexis Podesta as a confidential informant during a corruption investigation into former California Gov. Gavin Newsom's chief of staff, Dana Williamson, who later pleaded guilty to federal fraud and tax charges. Williamson's attorney said Podesta secretly recorded conversations while wearing a wire beginning in June 2024, leading to intercepted communications involving numerous Sacramento political insiders and lobbyists. The broader federal investigation has since expanded to include Gavin Newsom, his wife Jennifer Newsom, and members of their inner circle, with reports indicating investigators are examining Jennifer Newsom's nonprofit and tax-related matters. Newsom has acknowledged the investigation and said people close to him have received subpoenas.
