A Single Book Is Equivalent To This World!
Imām Muqbil—may Allāh have mercy upon him—said:
"And we advise the students of knowledge to be devoted to the acquisition of books, even if one of them must sell his car, and even if one of them must sell his ʿamāmah (turban) for the purpose of buying a book. A single book is equivalent to this world and whatever good it contains."

"If people abandon knowledge, they will become ignorant."

The Virtue of Knowledge [Narration #2]
Ibn Masʿūd—may Allāh be pleased with him—said:
«عَلَيْكُمْ بِالعِلْمِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُقْبَضَ، وَقَبْضُهُ أَنْ يُذْهَبَ بِأَصْحَابِهِ»
"Adhere to knowledge before it is taken away, and its being taken away is that its people are taken (i.e., they die)."

| 4 | THIS IS A FITNAH AND HUMILIATION!
It is narrated from Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit that he said:
One day, ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd—may Allāh be pleased with him—went out from his home, and some people started to follow him.
He said to them:
“Are you in need of something?”
They said:
“No, we are not in need of anything; we just want to walk with you (to follow you).”
He replied:
“Go back! Because this is a humiliation for the follower, and it is a fitnah for the one who is being followed.”

| 5 | ONE MILLION NARRATIONS WRITTEN BY HAND!
Muḥammad ibn Naṣr al-Ṭabarī—may Allāh have mercy on him—said:
“I visited Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn—may Allāh have mercy on him—and found by him such-and-such amounts of parchments (notebooks). And I heard him say:
‘Indeed, I have written with these two hands of mine one million narrations.’”

| 6 | “DO YOU THINK THAT I SELL ḤADĪTH?”
ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus said:
“The Amīr ʿĪsā ibn Mūsā sent to al-Aʿmash a thousand dirhams and a book so that he would write in it ḥadīth.
So he wrote in it:
‘In the name of Allāh, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. Say, “He is Allāh, [Who is] One,”’ and he sent it back to him.
He (the Amīr) sent to him, saying:
‘Do you think that I am not proficient in the Book of Allāh, i.e. the Qurʾān?’
He (al-Aʿmash) sent to him, saying:
‘Do you think that I sell ḥadīth?’”

The Virtues of Knowledge [Narration #1]
Shaykh al-Islām—may Allāh have mercy on him—said regarding the ḥadīth:
«مَنْ يُرِدِ اللهُ بِهِ خَيْرًا يُفَقِّهْهُ فِي الدِّينِ»
"Whomever Allāh intends good for, He grants him understanding of the religion."
The necessary implication of this is that whoever Allāh does not grant understanding in the religion, He did not intend good for him. Thus, gaining understanding in the religion is an obligation. And understanding in the religion means knowing the legal rulings through their revealed evidences. So whoever does not know that, is not one who understands.

The Virtues of Knowledge [Narration #1]
Shaykh al-Islām—may Allāh have mercy on him—said regarding the ḥadīth:

| 9 | PERFECTLY DICTATING ELEVEN THOUSAND NARRATIONS FROM MEMORY!
Abū Dāwūd al-Khaffāf said:
I heard Isḥāq ibn Rāhawayh say:
“Indeed, it is as though I am looking at one hundred thousand narrations in my books, and thirty thousand (narrations) I am able to recite.”
Al-Khaffāf said:
“Isḥāq ibn Rāhawayh dictated eleven thousand narrations to us from his memory. He then read them out to us (again) without adding or removing a single letter.”

| 10 | DO NOT BE EXTRAVAGANT WITH WATER
Al-Imām Aḥmad—may Allāh have mercy on him—reported on the authority of ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ—may Allāh be pleased with him:
The Prophet ﷺ passed by Saʿd while he was performing wuḍūʾ (ablution).
He ﷺ said:
“What is this extravagance?”
Saʿd said:
“Is there extravagance with water in al-wuḍūʾ?”
He ﷺ said:
“Yes, even if you were on the banks of a flowing river.”
Reported by Ibn Mājah on the authority of Qutaybah.
I say: The chain is ḥasan.

| 11 | KNOWLEDGE AND MANNERS
Al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī—may Allāh have mercy on him—said:
عِلْمٌ بِلا أدب كنار بِلا حطب، وأدب بلا عِلْم كروح بِلا جِسم.
“Knowledge without manners is like fire without wood. Manners without knowledge is like a spirit without a body.”

| 12 | TEACH YOUR CHILDREN TO BE TRUTHFUL
Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-ʿUthaymīn—may Allāh have mercy on him—said:
“Teach your children to be truthful in speech and actions. Therefore, when you speak to them, don’t lie to them, and when you promise them, don’t break your promise.”

| 13 | ENVY AND HATRED
Al-Shaykh Muqbil ibn Hādī al-Wādiʿī—may Allāh have mercy on him—said:
“They envy the youth whose prestige they cannot reach;
People become his enemies and adversaries.
Like co-wives of a beautiful woman say;
Out of jealousy and hate, she is ugly.”

| 16 | THE STUDENT OF KNOWLEDGE MUST BE PATIENT
Imām Muqbil ibn Hādī al-Wādiʿī—may Allāh have mercy on him—said:
“A student of knowledge must be patient, even if matters and problems accumulate upon him, and he feels tightness in his chest.
He may even push himself with memorisation and dedication to seeking knowledge to the extent that he feels hardness in his heart.
This should not deter him, for Shayṭān does not want good for you; he wants to turn you away from seeking knowledge.
This is because seeking knowledge in this time is the greatest fortress, by the permission of Allāh the Exalted, that protects you from trials.”

| 17 | THE ENEMIES OF ISLĀM WILL SWALLOW US UP
Imām Muqbil—may Allāh have mercy on him—said:
«أَهْلُ السُّنَّةِ مُحْتَاجُونَ إِلَى تَزَاوُرٍ فِيمَا بَيْنَهُمْ، وَإِلَى تَعَاوُنٍ، وَإِلَّا، فَوَاللَّهِ سَيَبْتَلِعُنَا أَعْدَاءُ الْإِسْلَامِ».
“Ahl al-Sunnah are in need of visiting one another and cooperating with one another (upon goodness), and if not, by Allāh, the enemies of Islām will swallow us up.”

| 18 | THE PHRASE “NATURAL DISASTERS”
Imām Muqbil—may Allāh have mercy on him—wrote:
“As for the one who ascribes these matters (i.e., earthquakes and the likes) to nature and says (they are) natural disasters; if he intends by this that nature itself is the cause, then he is a disbeliever.
It is reported in the two authentic ḥadīth compilations (Bukhārī and Muslim) from the ḥadīth of Zayd ibn Khālid al-Juhanī, who said:
Allāh’s Messenger ﷺ led the morning prayer in al-Ḥudaybiyah after it had rained the previous night. When the Prophet ﷺ had finished the prayer, he faced the people and said:
‘Do you know what your Lord has said?’
They replied:
‘Allāh and His Messenger know better.’
(The Prophet ﷺ said):
‘Allāh said: “This morning some of My worshippers remained as true believers and some became non-believers; he who said that it had rained due to the blessing and mercy of Allāh is a believer in Me and does not believe in the star, but he who said it had rained because of such-and-such star is a disbeliever in Me and a believer in the star.”’”

| 19 | WHAT TRULY HARMS US
Imām Muqbil ibn Hādī al-Wādiʿī—may Allāh have mercy on him—said:
“It does not harm us that our clothes become ripped, nor does it harm us that we go hungry. What harms us is that we are stripped of our religion for the perishable goods of this worldly life.”

| 20 | The Greatest Harm
Imām Muqbil ibn Hādī al-Wādiʿī—may Allāh have mercy on him—said:
«أَعْظَمُ مَا يَضُرُّ الْمُسْلِمِينَ هُوَ تَنْفِيرُهُمْ عَنْ عُلَمَائِهِمْ».
“The greatest matter which harms the Muslims is the matter of pushing them away from their scholars.”
