In the recordings Zini stated that Israel’s security apparatus must be loyal to the elected government as opposed to their current unelected bureaucratic system that answers only to the Supreme Court :
I agreed to become head of the Shin Bet because of the ability to be loyal to the elected echelon… Human rights and individual rights are often used as an excuse. They harm and trample common sense in the name of procedures and regulations. Lawyers and legal professionals are an auxiliary tool.
Zini was appointed by Netanyahu in order to replace the former chief Ronan Bar who was involved in investigating Netanyahu for corruption.
Zini’s remarks drew criticism from the Israeli opposition who accuse Zini of being ideologically loyal to Netanyahu as opposed to the state:
