Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Israeli Prime Minister publicly attack each other after Ben-Gvir refused to merge his party with Smotrich’s party (that will most likely fail to gain enough seats to remain in the Knesset without Ben Gvir’s support) and risking multiple seats for Netanyahu’s right wing coalition in the October election.
Ben-Gvir has refused to run under a joint list with Smotrich on multiple occasions, both in June, and more recently after Netanyahu announced that he wants to hold a meeting with Ben-Gvir and Smotrich this Sunday to push them to merge.
The primary tension began when former IDF General Ofer Winter joined the race under the “People of Israel” party. Polling indicated that Winter would gain around 6 seats, which overwhelmingly come from Netanyahu’s block and put Smotrich’s party under the election threshold (3.25% of the vote needed to qualify).
Ben-Gvir’s refusal to join parties with Smotrich is based on his unwillingness to relinquish control of his party, as a joint list would have fully share decision making. Instead Ben-Gvir told Netanyahu that he should merge all the small right wing parties, including Smotrich’s, into one party that would guarantee Smotrich passes the threshold, or to grant Smotrich reserved spots in his own Likud party, which would weaken Likud’s internal control but would keep Smotrich in the race. | 634 |
