The term "glamorous blues-rock" in the context of 2020 is an unofficial label describing how the genre adapted to the COVID-19 pandemic. With global lockdowns bringing touring and concert venue operations to a complete halt, the genre began to evolve in unique directions that earned it this "glamorous" tag:
• Impeccable studio sound replaced raw live energy. Historically, blues rock has been associated with a "gritty," smoky sound and the atmosphere of small bars. In 2020, deprived of the opportunity to perform live, artists channeled all their energy into creating meticulously crafted, flawlessly produced, and technically polished studio albums.
• The year 2020 saw the release of stylish, visually striking, and commercially polished records from modern, more "glossy" representatives of the genre—such as Samantha Fish (whose album *Kill or Be Kind* topped the charts), Joe Bonamassa, Larkin Poe, and the Tedeschi Trucks Band. These artists reintroduced high-end production values and spectacular presentation to a genre traditionally defined by rugged simplicity.
• At the same time, a form of "lockdown overcompensation" was taking place—a trend that perfectly captured the irony of 2020. While the rest of the world sat at home in sweatpants, the blues rock scene responded with an explosion of vibrant, high-budget livestreams, stylish music videos, and eye-catching promotional campaigns designed to hold the attention of an isolated audience.

Aerosmith – “Crazy and Cryin’.” Aerosmith’s album “Get the Grip”, a massive hit in 1993, is a fresh addition to the blues-rock power ballad genre. Both songs perfectly blend Steven Tyler’s heart-wrenching, raspy vocals, Joe Perry’s piercing blues guitar solos, and the electrifying pulse of the brass section.
Gary Moore – “Parisienne Walkways” (Live from ‘Blues Alive’). Although the song was originally written earlier, it is one of the most iconic blues-rock guitar compositions of all time. The 1993 live album *Blues Alive* features what is perhaps the rawest, most sincere, and most energetic version of the track. The drawn-out, heart-wrenching guitar tones and powerful rhythm section make it a prime example of a power ballad.
Coverdale-Page – Take Me for a Little While. When Whitesnake vocalist David Coverdale and Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page joined forces for a collaborative project in 1993, the monumental sound of blues rock was infused with this vibe. This song is a beautifully crafted ballad that begins with an acoustic
Alvin Lee – “The Bluest Blues.” The former legendary guitarist of Ten Years After released this song in December 1993 on his album *Nineteen Ninety Four*. This track is one of the absolute highlights of the genre: an endlessly melancholic, slow blues-rock ballad that also features the king of progressive rock, George Harrison (The Beatles), as a guest artist with a breathtaking slide guitar solo.
Lenny Kravitz – Believe. The 1993 song “Are You Gonna Go My Way” is one of the most beautiful tracks on the album. Kravitz reimagines the world of ’60s and ’70s soul and blues-rock in a contemporary style. This song is a slow, monumental ballad that culminates in a stunning distorted guitar solo at the end.
Joe Cocker — “You Are So Beautiful” (from the 1993 album *Blues & Ballads*). Joe Cocker, the king of white blues-rock, released the album *Blues & Ballads* in 1993, on which he focused on the raw, raspy, painfully honest singing style characteristic of blues ballads. | 3 339 |
