There are three of them. ‘Why is it so expensive’, “Why are the Chinese cheap”, “Why despite the fact that it is expensive for us and cheap for the Chinese, we should keep giving money to us and not to them”. ❓Question 1: ‘The intelligence of an AI model is roughly equal to the logarithm of the resources used to train and run it.’ The more computational resources (data, hardware and training process) invested, the higher the intelligence of the model. A logarithmic relationship: initially, more resources lead to rapid growth; over time, the payoff of additional resources diminishes. But it is not that there is no return on investment. ❓Question 2: ‘The cost of using a given level of AI falls by a factor of about 10 every 12 months.’ This is good because the falling cost makes AI available to more people and businesses, which leads to new uses and accelerates technology development. Case in point: Deep Seek and other projects of this nature. They wouldn't exist if ‘majors’ like ChatGPT hadn't paved the way. Therefore, the opposition ‘cheap DeepSeek’ vs ‘expensive American algorithm’ is false. The cheapness of ‘subordinate models’ is also a good thing, as it works for wide access to the tool. ❓Question 3: ‘The socio-economic value of a linear increase in intelligence is exponential in nature’. No matter how much money you invest, it will still pay off. Even efficiency gains that fall in logarithmic logic have unpredictable and hard to calculate, but potentially ‘huge’ benefits. With this, Altman explains why investment in his AI should continue to grow even as the returns diminish. The example here is a classic one for model owners. At a cost of 100 billion, the AI learned to recognise cancer at an early stage with 80% accuracy. And for another 200 billion on top of that, the model will bring the accuracy to 90% - and it will justify all the costs, because it will save everyone and also save money on treatment. The question - ‘maybe we should not have taken all these 300 billion from medical education and “put the eggs in different baskets”’ - is traditionally dismissed. What the hell do these doctors need when there is an algorithm! Bottom line: the correct behaviour is to invest even more in the US majors and ignore both the decreasing efficiency of the new versions of AI they produce and the emergence of ‘economy variants’ from China and thick Western universities. And in exchange for this correct behaviour, Altman promises to create an ‘agent economy’ for investors over the coming years. Within the framework of which ‘AI-agents’ will become ‘junior employees’ of any human activity - from virtual ‘juniors’ in IT to ‘residents’ in medicine.
