| 8 | 🇮🇳🇺🇸 Trump, Modi Look to Patch Up Ties in Shadow of New US Strikes
A possible meeting next week between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump offers a chance to reset ties following a year of strained relations over tariffs, Pakistan, and now, the Iran war.
US forces this week attacked three Indian-crewed vessels in the Gulf of Oman region, killing at least three sailors and prompting protests from New Delhi.
Modi and Trump would likely want to contain the latest tensions and avoid derailing efforts to get relations back on track after a rocky year, analysts said. The expected meeting on the sidelines of the Group of Seven leaders’ summit in France next week would be their first face-to-face since a falling out last year following India’s military clash with Pakistan and Trump’s tariffs.
The highly anticipated meeting would build on steps taken by both countries in recent months to repair damaged ties. Last month, Trump dispatched Secretary of State Marco Rubio for a multi-day visit to India, where he met with multiple Indian officials and with envoys from Japan and Australia as part of a security grouping known as the Quad.
Indian nationals are particularly vulnerable to attacks on commercial shipping. Indians are among the top three nationalities represented aboard such vessels, according to the Indian government, with more 300,000 Indians — about 12% of the global seafaring workforce — working in the industry.
Indian and US trade negotiators have met twice since March, including in Washington in April and during a four-day meeting this month in New Delhi, to resolve outstanding issues. Indian officials have maintained that finalizing the deal is unlikely until the outcome of two so-called Section 301 trade probes.

| 9 | 📉 The World Bank on Thursday cut its global growth forecast for 2026 to 2.5% due to the war in the Middle East, and said growth could slow to just 1.3% if energy supply disruptions prove more severe and come with substantial stress in financial markets.
Global growth reached 2.9% in 2025, the bank said in its semi-annual Global Economic Prospects, up 0.2 percentage point from its estimate in January. Its 2026 forecast is down 0.1 percentage point from January, the lowest seen since the COVID pandemic that began in late 2019.
The bank lowered forecasts for two-thirds of countries as a result of the war, with the biggest cuts affecting the United Arab Emirates, Iraq and other countries in the Middle East whose energy exports have been hit hard by the conflict.
The World Bank said its baseline forecast assumed an average Brent crude oil price of $94 for the year, up 36% from 2025, and that the worst disruptions to energy supplies would abate by the end of July, with global headline inflation seen at 4%.
It said growth could slow to 2.1% if the energy disruptions lasted longer and oil prices averaged $115 per barrel this year, which could drive inflation to 4.4%. The outlook would worsen further, with growth decelerating to just 1.3%, if the energy shock affected financial markets, resulting in lower energy prices, greater volatility and weaker confidence, it said.
The bank maintained its forecast of 2.2% growth in the U.S. economy in 2026, but said that could taper off to 2.1% in 2027 and 2% in 2028. The euro area was expected to grow by 0.8% in 2026, down from 1.4% in 2025. Japan's GDP was forecast to grow 0.7% in 2026, down from 1.1% in 2025.
It slashed its forecast for GDP growth in the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan and Pakistan by 2.7 percentage points to 1.6% in 2026, down from 4% in 2025, but said growth in the region could rebound to 5% in 2027.
The United Arab Emirates was expected to see growth of 2.4% in 2026, down sharply from the January forecast of 5% and the 2025 rate of 6.2%. The bank also lowered Turkey's 2026 GDP growth forecast by 0.9 percentage point to 2.8%.
The World Bank said India remained the fastest-growing large economy in the world, with its GDP seen growing by 6.6% in 2026, after growth of 7% in 2025. Growth rates in India were expected to remain fairly high for the next two decades, Gill said.

| 10 | 🇦🇪🤝🇮🇷 UAE and Iran Meet Face-to-Face to Try to Deescalate Tensions
Senior national security officials from the United Arab Emirates and Iran held a face-to-face meeting for the first time since the start of the US-Israeli war against Tehran, according to people with knowledge of the situation.
This week’s meeting marked a stark turnaround for both sides and comes amid their growing acknowledgment of the importance of calmer bilateral ties, the people said, asking not to be named discussing sensitive matters.
The UAE’s leaders want to keep their bold economic ambitions, including investing billions of dollars in increased oil production and in AI data centers, on track. The relationship is important for Tehran too, as the Gulf nation was among the Islamic Republic’s biggest trading partners before the war began and a key conduit for sanctioned Iranian oil.
Abu Dhabi’s latest contact with Iran, the people said, was mainly motivated by the wealthy Gulf state seeking a detente with a regime it considers an enemy but realizes won’t be dislodged from power.
Since the war began in late February, Iran has attacked the UAE the most of any country. Abu Dhabi struck back on multiple occasions and has taken the most aggressive stance among its Arab neighbors toward the Islamic Republic. The UAE appears to be now following the same path as Qatar and Saudi Arabia, which have also been hit by Iran and its proxies but are trying diplomacy to de-escalate tensions.
One of the people said the meeting was the culmination of multiple attempts by the Iranians to reestablish high-level dialog with Abu Dhabi. The UAE had held off, they said, to first verify that any interlocutors had a direct line to new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
📝: This explains why Iran hasn't bombed the UAE in recent weeks and targeted only Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan despite the UAE housing American military assets and lending its airspace to the USAF.
A UAE-Iran rapprochement could also be one of the reasons why Trump has "run out" of patience with Iran and started bombing it in order to provoke retaliation from Tehran and derail peace talks.

| 16 | 🇺🇸⚔️🇮🇷 The president who promised to not start new wars decries the lack of appetite for more war among the American public:
(...) I don't know if America has the appetite to do what I would really much prefer doing. We've lost 13 soldiers in two wars — none in Venezuela, and we took over the country. In Iran, we lost 13.
In Vietnam, we lost hundreds of thousands. They go crazy because I've been in Iran for three months—I've decimated the country.
They said you said you'd be out of there faster. Well, it's a much bigger situation now because we've done a better job than anybody anticipated you could do in such [time].
Look, we were in Vietnam for 19 years, and we didn't do the job because we didn't have the right leadership, to be honest. If it were me, I would've had that war done in 3-4 months.

| 18 | 🇪🇺❌🇨🇳⚡️ — 📰 ZeroHedge | EU Wants Crisis Powers To Seize Control Of Chip Supplies, Seeks Restrictions On Chinese Imports | May 28, 2026:
"The EU - which is badly lagging the rest of the world when it comes to AI development - is preparing sweeping emergency powers to intervene in Europe’s semiconductor supply chains during shortages, including by forcing chipmakers to override existing contracts, the FT reported. So much for the sanctity of those "contract-backed" backlogs...
The draft law also enables common purchasing to boost the bloc’s negotiating power, and would mark a clear expansion of the EU’s powers to intervene directly in industrial supply chains.
Amid tensions between Beijing and Washington, there are growing fears in Europe that semiconductors can become a tool of economic coercion, heightened by European reliance on Taiwan for high-performance chips."
