#CommonMistakes Reduce vs. Decrease Many students often misuse “reduce” in writing Task1 and confuse it with “decrease”. Make note of the difference: 🔸Reduce is to make something smaller or less in amount, degree, or size. •The university has reduced the number of applicants this year. 📌This verb is transitive, so it should be followed by an object. It means you can’t write “The number of applicants reduced” 🔸Decrease is to become smaller or less in size, amount, intensity, or degree. •The number of applicants has decreased this year. 📌This verb can be used both as a transitive verb (with an object) or intransitive verb (without an object). ✔️To recap, “reduce” is often not suitable to use in Task1 when we have no information about who is responsible for the action. P.S. The passive and noun forms can often be used with some diagrams though.
