📍 Why have Sugar Prices Increased?
🟢 Price rose from ₹48.18/kg (20 July 2026) to ₹55.70/kg (20 August 2026) — around 15.6% rise.

🟢 Red Rot & Top Borer diseases and waterlogging due to excess rainfall.
🟢 Festive-season demand.
🟢 Rising global sugar prices and tightening global supplies.

🟢 Sugar diverted for ethanol declined from 12% in 2022-23 to around 9% in 2025-26.
🟢 Nearly three-fourths of India’s ethanol now comes from grains, particularly maize.
🟢 Hence, the recent sugar price rise cannot be attributed primarily to ethanol diversion.

🟢 The Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List at the 48th Session of the World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea.

🟢 Located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Sarnath is one of the four principal Buddhist pilgrimage sites associated with the life of Gautama Buddha.
🟢 It is the place where Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon in the 6th century BCE.
🟢 The sermon is known as Dharmachakra Pravartana or the “Turning of the Wheel of the Law”.
🟢 It marked the beginning of the Buddhist Sangha and establishment of the principles of the Noble Eightfold Path.

📍 Why in News?
✅ The PIB released a detailed FAQ-based backgrounder on the Ken–Betwa Link Project (KBLP) on 21 August 2026.
✅ KBLP is the first priority project under the National Perspective Plan for Interlinking of Rivers to enter the implementation stage.
📍 Project at a Glance
✅ Objective: Transfer water from the Ken Basin to the Betwa Basin to address water scarcity and irrigation challenges in Bundelkhand.
✅ Daudhan Dam: 96.7 m high, on the Ken River in Panna and Chhatarpur districts.
✅ Link Canal: 216.465 km, from near Daudhan Dam to Barua Sagar near Jhansi.
✅ Other components include Lower Orr Project, Kotha Barrage and Bina Complex Multipurpose Project.
✅ Cost: ₹44,605 crore.
✅ Target completion: 2030.

✅ Irrigation to 10.62 lakh hectares.

📍 Land Acquisition & R&R
✅ 22 villages in MP are affected — 8 in Panna and 14 in Chhatarpur.
✅ Land acquisition is being undertaken under the LARR Act, 2013 and applicable state laws.
✅ GoMP announced a Special R&R Package in 2023.
✅ Land compensation: ₹12.50 lakh/hectare or the rate under the Act, whichever is higher.
✅ Eligible families can receive ₹7 lakh for a rural plot / ₹6.50 lakh for an urban plot, or ₹12.50 lakh lump-sum if a plot is not opted for.
📍 Compensation Progress
✅ Awards worth about ₹629.87 crore have been passed for 5,039 affected families.
✅ About ₹604.745 crore (~96%) has already been paid.
✅ Livelihood restoration includes skill development, SHG grants, small-business assistance and priority employment.
📍 Tribal & Forest Rights
✅ Rights of Scheduled Tribes and forest-dependent communities are safeguarded under the Forest Rights Act, 2006.
✅ The process for free, prior and informed consent of relevant Gram Sabhas was initiated before forest clearance.
✅ Forest Clearance was accorded by MoEFCC
📍 Environmental Concerns & Mitigation
✅ The project involves environmental impacts, particularly concerning the Panna Tiger Reserve (PTR) and the wider Panna landscape.
✅ Measures include compensatory afforestation, wildlife conservation, habitat management, catchment-area treatment and biodiversity protection.
✅ The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) prepared an Integrated Landscape Management Plan (ILMP) for the Greater Panna Landscape.
✅ The Greater Panna Landscape Council (GPLC) has been constituted under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary, Madhya Pradesh.

📍 Why in News?
✅ India and Japan held the Japan–India Defence Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on 20 August 2026, co-chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi.
✅ Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the Japan–India Special Strategic and Global Partnership and a Free and Open Indo-Pacific.
📍 Maritime Security Cooperation
✅ Signed a Memorandum of Arrangement on Maritime Security Cooperation between the two Defence Ministries.
✅ Cooperation will include:
• Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) information sharing
• Search & Rescue (SAR)
• Humanitarian Assistance & Disaster Relief (HADR)
• Protection of Sea Lines of Communication (SLOCs)
• Naval ship visits, joint exercises and personnel/SME exchanges
• Logistical support, including access to ports and repair facilities.
📍 Defence Technology & Shipbuilding
✅ India and Japan will explore joint development in naval shipbuilding and design, leveraging Japan’s technological expertise and India’s production capabilities.
✅ Discussions will advance on Japan’s use of Indian production capabilities under Make in India.
✅ Both sides agreed to work towards reciprocal ship-repair facilities.
📍 Military Exercises
✅ Dharma Guardian – Army exercise.
✅ JAIMEX – Maritime exercise.
✅ Veer Guardian 26 – Air Force exercise; Japanese fighter aircraft will visit India and participate for the first time.
✅ Future exercises will incorporate greater complexity, unmanned systems and short-notice joint exercises.
📍 Defence Technology & Industrial Cooperation
✅ UNICORN integrated communications antenna system is identified as the first defence equipment transfer project between India and Japan.
✅ DRDO–ATLA cooperation will be deepened in advanced defence technologies.
✅ Both sides intend to convene a Defence Industry Forum.
✅ A new Working Group, headed at Director-General/Joint Secretary level, will coordinate cooperation across operational, intelligence, equipment, technology and industrial domains.
📍 Indo-Pacific & Wider Cooperation
✅ Welcomed the first trilateral naval PASSEX involving India, Japan and Indonesia, conducted in February 2026.
✅ Cooperation will be expanded with third countries through exercises and high-level exchanges.
