| 4 | The latest in the Church Fathers series is now up!
Irenaeus has been a great writer thus far. If Justin Martyr was the Church's first apologetics guy, Irenaeus is the Church's first hermeneutics guy.
But like anyone else, he sure as heck wasn't infallible. Let's take a listen to his overextension of typology into what is now called the "allegorical method."

| 7 | 57 Then those who had seized Jesus led him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered. 58 And Peter was following him at a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priest, and going inside he sat with the guards to see the end. 59 Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death, 60 but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward 61 and said, “This man said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to rebuild it in three days.’” 62 And the high priest stood up and said, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?” 63 But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to him, “I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” 64 Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.” 65 Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy. 66 What is your judgment?” They answered, “He deserves death.” 67 Then they spit in his face and struck him. And some slapped him, 68 saying, “Prophesy to us, you Christ! Who is it that struck you?”
-Matthew 26:57-68
After deliberating and interrogating Jesus, the Sanhedrin finally hears Jesus say He is the Christ. "You have said so" is a statement of affirmation in those times, and Jesus adds to it that He is the Son of Man who will sit at God's right hand. So they lose their minds in anger and decide that He must die. Why?
The phrase "Son of Man" come" from a prophecy found in Daniel 7. In the thirteenth and fourteenth verses, the prophet writes:
“I saw in the night visions,
and behold, with the clouds of heaven
there came one like a son of man,
and he came to the Ancient of Days
and was presented before him.
And to him was given dominion
and glory and a kingdom,
that all peoples, nations, and languages
should serve him;
his dominion is an everlasting dominion,
which shall not pass away,
and his kingdom one
that shall not be destroyed.
The Son of Man in this prophecy is given all the honors due to God Himself, being worshiped and served all over the world. Yet the Pharisees had also been taking notes over the course of Jesus's earthly ministry, and they had heard what being the Son of Man entailed: being able to forgive sins, being Lord of the Sabbath, being master of the angels (Matthew 13:41), and rising from the dead. In other words, the Son of Man not only receives that which belongs to God, He also has all authority which belongs to God. This is only possible if He *is* God, for the Lord says in Isaiah 42:8 that He does not share His glory with anyone. When Jesus cites Daniel here, the ones interrogating Him understand exactly what He meant.
If anyone else had said this, the religious authorities would have been right to be angry. Moses attests that anyone trying to lead the people to false deities must be put to death. But the error these jews made is that Moses' commandment doesn't apply when the claim to deity is *true,* and Jesus truly is correct to claim Divinity. Sadly, their minds had been so clouded by jealousy, anxiety for keeping their positions and fear of being supplanted that they could not see the truth. How could they? After all, they spent all of His ministry opposing Him at every turn, and they would not turn back now. So they declare - as they wished from the beginning - that the Christ that everyone hoped for must be put to death. | 217 |
| 8 | Millennials are gonna be OK thanks to our discovery that God made man a learning creature | 234 |
| 9 | Once more, if we did the whole First Use of the Law thing and executed, exiled or beat criminals, then we wouldn't have this problem. There wouldn't be this wave of people trying to be found innocent by reason of sympathy for hard times if we just did what God establishes governments to do. | 256 |
| 10 | Having a hard time in life (divorce, difficult children, work stress) has now become a public excuse for stabbing random people...if you're a woman. Reminder though, society's standards have *always* been this high, so high in fact that they're doubled. | 262 |
| 11 | Seriously, it's typical of a false teacher or cult leader to look oh so nice and sweet to people. It's why mormons are "nice," why hypercharismatics play soothing music during their sermons, etc. They're penguins with their beaks clammed up (until it's time to eat the faithful of course). | 237 |
| 12 | Penguins are only cute when their beaks are closed.
I can think of no greater comparison in nature to the false teacher. We remember Christ saying that the false prophets would come as wolved in sheep's clothing (Matthew 7:15). This is of course the best way to put it, but penguins seem to nail it in terms of observable nature. | 230 |
| 13 | I did not realize that people wanted to hear about moloch that badly.
I guess if you've been rarin' to hear about that particularly nasty false deity, here's the cliffnotes:

| 14 | Flock cameras are dumb.
Our people discovered from the Word centuries ago that polite societies are formed by hanging bad criminals, exiling not-so-bad criminals, beating people for nasty indiscretions and giving everyone the right to bear arms. The way that this curbs men's natural wickedness is what we call the first use of the Law, and if it were fully employed in society again we wouldn't need cameras everywhere snooping on everyone's private business. | 237 |
| 15 | The latest in the Talmud series is now up!
And it's a perfect reflection of the evils in the texts. Not because it's *shocking* per se, but more evil in the mind-numbing way. Let's uh, let's get into it and don't forget your ibuprofen.

| 16 | 47 While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.” 49 And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” And he kissed him. 50 Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you came to do.” Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. 51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53 Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? 54 But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?” 55 At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day I sat in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. 56 But all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left him and fled.
-Matthew 26:47-56
Jesus calls Judas "friend." He calls the man who betrays Him "friend!" But then He rebukes St. Peter, the man attempting to defend Him. He tells the man who supports Him to lay down his arms! Imagine how confused the Apostles must be, to see Jesus go along with the murderous crowd while sending them away.
We must admit our angst here as well. Throughout the Scriptures we see this dynamic consistently run through every page. It feels like God treats whoever belongs to Him harshly, while He treats the outsider with "kid gloves." David's census leads to thousands slaughtered for the crime of...counting (2 Samuel 24). Uzzah is killed for merely touching the ark of the Covenant (2 Samuel 6). Meanwhile Naaman the Syrian is healed of his leprosy and gets to worship the true God without so much as learning five words from the Law of Moses (2 Kings 5), and even the nations who get judged are also called "my people" by our Lord Isaiah 19:25). Asaph complains about this very dynamic in Psalm 73 and he has to work mightily to overcome his angst the same way we have to. After all, even to this day it looks like the wicked prosper and live in God's favor, while the Church lies is ruins.
But it only appears that way. Judgment begins at the house of God (1 Peter 4:17), for we belong to Him and are reserved for eternal life. Of course we go through harder times in this world, just as Lazarus went through a harder life than Dives - but Lazarus has eternal life in joy, while Dives is burning in hell forever (Luke 16:19-31).
Every blessing given to the nonbeliever is a chance for them to recognize how God exhorts them to repent, for them to feel ashamed of their sin and to turn to our Lord for forgiveness. That is why Jesus calls Judas "friend" and goes with the crowd. It is what inspired such shame in Judas that he hung himself.
More importantly though, Jesus insists on permitting it so that the plan of salvation may be completed just as the prophets foretold. Remember, the Gospel is what makes all of this *fair,* vindicating God's justice and proving His love to all. It is the Atonement which guarantees that this life is the closest thing to hell that us Christians will ever experience, and everything after this life is pure joy. Meanwhile, for those who ignored every call to repentance and continued hating God, this life is the closest they will ever get to Heaven. | 222 |
| 17 | I think of this passage often, it seems to apply to far more than just covetousness. | 215 |
| 18 | 13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” 14 But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?” 15 And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” 16 And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17 and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ 21 So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”
