The latest Evaluating Gnosticism ep is now up!
The gnostics have a problem. Well, they have a lot of problems really, but one particularly big one is their inability to agree on the definitions of their doctrines - even within the same schools of thought.

| 3 | 23 The same day Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question, 24 saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.’ 25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother. 26 So too the second and third, down to the seventh. 27 After them all, the woman died. 28 In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her.”
29 But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 31 And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God: 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.” 33 And when the crowd heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.
-Matthew 22:23-33
The Sadducees do not feature as heavily in the Gospels as the Pharisees do. This is in part due to them simply being too busy to attack Jesus. The majority of the aristocracy and the priesthood were Sadducees (the word itself is derived from Zadok, a high priest); this means they were constantly conducting business and religious observances. Since they did not believe in an afterlife, they had two priorities: making money and enjoying luxury. For a Sadducee to take time out of his busy day to confront Jesus suggests that they were either amused at His teachings, or that they were worried His movement would threaten their opulent lifestyle.
So they ask a question about the Resurrection to Jesus, hoping to make Him look like a fool. They do not have the same murderous intent as their Pharisee counterparts, expressing a more earnest derision to our Lord. The example they provide, that of a woman and the seven brothers who engage in Levirate marriage, highlights their belief that a Resurrection would lead to legal absurdities.
Another angle they would have taken, perhaps in the modern day, would be inheritance law. Something along these lines:
"Jesus, let us suppose that fifty generations of Christians occupied the same piece of land and laid claim to inherit it. In the Resurrection, to whom does the land go? Since these successive generations also owned Christian slaves, to whom do those slaves belong - since different generations inherited them?"
See, the Sadducees were concerned with law, the *practical* side of things above all else. They did not accept the words of the Prophets, holding only to Moses' books: this left them chiefly with commandments, to which they concerned themselves. When our Lord answers them, He shows that they had never truly thought about the truth God shows us. They never stopped to think how absurd it would be for God to be the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob if these men were not alive. Being so Law-brained, they had no concept of metaphysics either, assuming that things in a resurrected state must be identical to life here on earth.
Note also that Jesus doesn't answer their question regarding the hypothetical woman and her seven husbands. We don't know anything about angelic biology - whether angels stand up or sit down to pee, whether they have relationships at all, etc. Saying people won't marry or be given in marriage only tells us that the Mosaic legal institutions regarding marriage are replaced with something else. Christ gives them a vague answer because they gave a nonsense question: they were speaking to the Resurrection Himself (John 11:25), trying to deny that a Resurrection exists! | 149 |

| 10 | 15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words. 16 And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone's opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. 17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. 20 And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” 21 They said, “Caesar's.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” 22 When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away.
-Matthew 22:15-22
Having been publicly humiliated yet again, the Pharisees find a different plot to have Jesus killed. At first they tried accusing Him of witchcraft so that people would stone Him to death (Matthew 12). This did not work, for Jesus turned their slander on its head and further embarrassed them in front of people. So now they appeal to the government.
They bring along Herodians, the court officials of king Herod. If they can catch Jesus saying people should not pay their taxes, then the Herodians would arrest Jesus on the spot and likely execute Him as one fomenting rebellion. Thus the Pharisees would be rid of Jesus, but their hands would look clean to the people. On the other hand, if He were to tell the people to pay their taxes, He risks losing many of His followers who were tired of living under Roman oppression.
Of course, Jesus knows about their plot and sees right through their feigned admiration. His answer is true certainly, but it is also the perfect answer to pour more humiliation on the Pharisees. "Render unto Caesar:" he's in charge temporally, so give him his due. "Render unto God:" give God the things that matter far more than tax money. Here Christ invites the Herodians to be upset at having their time wasted, and He shows the people that the Pharisees are bankrupt in piety. They are shown here to care more about money than weightier things like righteousness, salvation, and charity.
Again though, His words are not just masterful in dodging a murder attempt. They are also true and hold true for us to this day. If taxes are levied upon us, we must "render to Caesar" and pay them. More importantly though, we must not put our hope in the state for things like salvation. We must render to God such things as faith, hope, and obedience. | 218 |

Episode 385: In Praise of Prejudice (Burke Pt.2)
Today Super continues his evaluation of Edmund Burke’s Reflections on the Revolution in France, the foundational text for conservatism as we know it. This runs the gamut from the good to the bad of the ideology, from maintaining tradition to “let them eat cake” hypocrisy. As we discuss his praise for prejudice and love for state churches, we continue to ask: do Christians have to be conservatives?

Gargoyles Season 2 (Pt.2), Featuring Gordon
Hey did you know that 90’s children entertainment celebrated people living in their home territories and celebrating their differences? Do you remember a time when kids were told “become who you are” by big cartoon gargoyles? Tonight Super is joined by Gordon Kahl to discuss the Gargoyles World Tour Arc, Burger King Kids Club nationalism, and how Star Trek made the whole show.
The past is a foreign country, I swear.
