3 Then when Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he changed his mind and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, 4 saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.” 5 And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself. 6 But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is blood money.” 7 So they took counsel and bought with them the potter's field as a burial place for strangers. 8 Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9 Then was fulfilled what had been spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, saying, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him on whom a price had been set by some of the sons of Israel, 10 and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me.”

Now it is time for Judas to be betrayed. Under the Mosaic Law the priests had a sacred responsibility to hear and absolve sins by use of sin offerings and guilt offerings. Because the Temple system at the time allowed people to purchase the animals needed for sacrifice, this is most likely what Judas was trying to do. His change of mind was toward regret for his sin, and like all jews he was raised with the understanding that the altar is where sins are expiated.
But the priests refuse to do anything. The "blood money" excuse is not valid, because they had money changers on hand to exchange the currency to sanctified Temple silver. Even if they couldn't, they could have had Judas being in other coin. The real reason they refuse Judas' confession is that doing so would be to admit that *they* were wrong to hand Jesus over to Pilate. Then the priests themselves would have to take corrective measures over their own wickedness. So instead they just callously refuse to do their duty.
But the punishment for manstealing and murder is death under the Old Covenant. Judas first sought the priests to see if there was a way they could absolve him, or perhaps do the lawful thing and have him executed. But since they do not he decides to inflict capital punishment on himself.
Much can be said about the tragedy here. Is Judas had waited but a few days, then he could have gone to Jesus and received forgiveness. He could have been restored to his office the same way St. Peter did. Instead he ends his own life, fulfilling the vision that Jeremiah saw. But we cannot forget that first Judas was betrayed by the very men that he approached for betraying Jesus, adding even more tragic irony to the situation. By his death, we are not *just* exhorted to go to Christ instead of wallowing in our sin: we are also warned that what goes around may well come around, that our own sins end up falling upon our heads. Lord have mercy on us and strengthen us against our sinful nature! | 169 |

And a servant girl came up to him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.” 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you mean.” 71 And when he went out to the entrance, another servant girl saw him, and she said to the bystanders, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” 72 And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know the man.” 73 After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Certainly you too are one of them, for your accent betrays you.” 74 Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know the man.” And immediately the rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

We are often to quick to judge St. Peter for this denial. There are plenty of sermons written comparing his previous "bravado" to this moment. They'll say that St. Peter was all talk until the pressure was on and then he folded. At once such homilies go from somber disappointment at his backsliding to a kind of smug superiority. Perhaps the "fire and brimstone" sort of preaching will assure the listener that every Christian denies Jesus worse than St. Peter did every time they sin, so the layman is instructed to get to the altar call after service or else they're reprobate.
What such takes miss is that St. Peter was the best of the Apostles at this moment. Have you noticed that in Acts he is shown to be the leader of the church, with no one bringing this denial up? Not one of his Apostolic colleagues says "Peter, you denied our Lord, you are permanently disqualified from leading anything. Yes our Lord restored you to the Apostolic office but you shall not be in charge!" No, rather they see him as first among equals.
Remember, during this time the other Apostles are all in hiding, all of them except St. John (John 18:15). The same way St. Peter was the only one to get out of the boat when Jesus walked on water, here he is the only one mingling with the people to see about his Master's welfare. St. John stays silent and observes while St. Peter does his best to see if there is anything he can do. But then it dawns on him.
The text requires special consideration for what is actually happening. Did St. Peter really lie when he denied Jesus? He says "I do not know the man." Well did he? He didn't! After three years, St. Peter didn't understand what Jesus was saying about being crucified and rising again. Three years of seeing miracles and he still didn't figure out that Jesus is in control. St. Peter had faith, as we know from his confession: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16). But this was a young faith, an *infant* faith which only knew Who Jesus is - not what His identity truly means. Instead of saying St. Peter apostatized and lied from a place of fear, it is better to say that under duress he confessed a very real ignorance.
St. Peter denies Jesus because he doesn't know what is going on, and he could not understand why Jesus permitted this to happen. When the rooster crows and he remembers Christ foretelling the denials, this only compounds his painful confusion. The Man he didn't know as well as he thought told him this moment would happen, and now he has no path forward. It is still sinful, but it is a sin of despair from a failure to *trust,* not a sin of cowardice and deception.
And out of instant regret for this confused backsliding, he weeps. I venture to say that it was out of repentance, not disappointment, that he wept. After all, we find that same eager and childlike faith in St. Peter when he runs off to the empty tomb when he hears of it. The process of restoration began in this moment of letting his tears of shame flow.
And it is one that we find ourselves able to sympathize with. God grant us the confident strength that St. Peter normally had, and the same willingness to shed tears over our sins when we fail. | 221 |
