Pharisaic commands were hard to follow. If they were correct, that would not be such a big deal; if God laid out so many rules, who could question Him? Yet we know that the Pharisees' "oral torah" is wrong, since it contradicted or nullified the real Law in so many places. God does not desire that we should keep contradictory commandments, for He never contradicts Himself.
Yet that is beside the point in this passage. Jesus tells us in no uncertain terms that the Pharisees, not God, were the source of the endless extrabiblical rules and commands. *They* were the ones tying heavy burdens on people's backs, not the Lord. Making matters worse, they did not help those they burdened because they did not care about them. Swatting a fly on the Sabbath was considered a sin because it was "hunting," and women looking at their reflections on the Sabbath was called a sin because she tempted herself to pluck out gray hairs. They didn't permit people to be in the shadow of a pagan temple lest they even look like they associate with idolatry... in Roman Judea, where pagan temples were everywhere. They added requirements without granting permissions, always laying burdens but never giving any sort of reward.
Worse yet, they did not care about the people because they only cared about themselves. Their appearance, their reputation, their finances, all these took priority. While a poor jew somewhere was starving because they levied a tithe on every grain and forbade him from cooking what little food he had on the Sabbath, these guys got to go to the 1st century equivalent of cocktail parties. A widow with nothing to her name had to walk extra miles to go to work just to avoid the local pagan temple, while the Pharisees lived in nice houses and lived next to their synagogues. The working class had to wear rags while they walked around parading their holiness with big dumb phylactery boxes.
Surely this doesn't happen today...does it? Do we have clergy running around giving commands while not helping others? Do we have priests and pastors living in wealth while their congregations struggle? Just imagine, some bearded guy, his church drenched in gold, his vestments expensive, his 401K growing while he charges money for Baptisms to poor families. I'm sure he's totally holy and stuff. Couldn't be anyone we know, right? Imagine a guy with a YouTube account who brags about his big holy fasts and everything, telling everyone how to work for their salvation while his fat face glows red from his liquor habit. Out of the imagination, right? Or how about a Lutheran minister living in a nice gated community, telling everyone that they have to accept politics that are hurting their communities - or else they're "denying the Imago Dei" and thus damned? Hey remember all those theologians who bumped elbows with politicians at parties while you were locked down during COVID?

| 15 | 1 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, 2 “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat, 3 so do and observe whatever they tell you, but not the works they do. For they preach, but do not practice.
-Matthew 23:1-3
When Jesus says that the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat, He was almost certainly being sarcastic. After all, He just spent the previous parables, those of the tenants and the wedding feast, portraying them as murderous traitors who had abdicated any authority they once held (Mt.21:33-46, 22:1-14).
They sat in Moses' seat as pretenders and usurpers, having replaced the Word of God with their "oral Torah." See, they denied the Commandments through legalistic exceptions. The Pharisees taught things like "Corban," wherein one stops honoring his parents by telling them his deeds were dedicated to God. They tried to commit murder by slandering Jesus as a sorcerer or tax rebel, caring nothing about the Eighth Commandment - or for that matter the Fifth! And how would they excuse it, but by claiming that they were just speculating in public or just asking questions. Such exceptions were to be found for nearly every Mosaic commandment...but none were permitted for their traditions. In the first century, you could get away with theft or adultery or refusing to honor you parents, so long as you used pharisaic escape clauses; heaven help you though if you were caught healing a man on the Sabbath! To say that they were in Moses' seat then is an accusation, not a concession: they were there illegitimately.
So when Jesus says "do and observe whatever they tell you," this too is not meant as an earnest command. He did not personally do what they instructed people to do and nor did the Apostles and other disciples. Christ and His followers ate without washing, plucked grain on the Sabbath, healed on the Sabbath, and spent time with those declared untouchable by the Pharisees (tax collectors and sinners). Being without hypocrisy, our Savior quickly adds "but not the works they do." In other words, if a Pharisee does it, do not do it: this includes their illegitimate commands, which they themselves observed. They preached righteousness, but practiced nothing but talmudic nonsense. Thus, He means that only insofar as a Pharisee says what Moses commanded, that is what the people should do.
So it is with our churches today. If a Pope, metropolitan, pastor, theologian, etc., tries teaching or commanding something that is not in Scripture, what authority does he have? Why should you feel any need to obey him? If a man in a dress demands that you kiss paintings, fast twice a week, pay indulgences, put in "seed money," or any other absurdity, is this not the same abdication of authority as the Pharisees? | 197 |
